I run a surplus store. There was a severely autistic guy in his 20s who would come in every couple weeks, with a social worker. And every week it was a different story, one week he's killed a North Korean general, the next it was he had beef with Israeli Mosssad because he married someone's daughter. I think it was a coping mechanism for him. I never actively questioned it because I knew about his condition, but man did I have to hold back laughter. One time his social worker even had to step in because a veteran customer was getting a little heated and we had to explain.

I've been out of the Navy for over 35 years. So therefore I haven't kept up with all the uniform changes and would have a hard time telling what is legit and what is not. Some are really obvious and some are not. I used to wear old woodland camo pants I picked up at Gun shows and surplus stores because they were really good work pants, tough and cheap. People would ask me if I was a Marine and I would tell them, no I scored too High on my Asvab. Then immediately tell them, I was a proud Squid. After 9 11, I stopped wearing them so people wouldn't mistake me as a recent Soldier or Marine and thank me for something I didn't do. I do wear my Navy Veterans ball cap, as a result, I have had a few Homeless Veterans reach out to me as a fellow Brother to talk to, which is what us older guys should be doing. People have Thanked me for my service and I will tell them, I appreciate it but the only real Danger I was ever in was running out of beer and money in the Philippines said with a chuckle. @THAT GUY oh dear, it seems that you have taken my dry humour seriously😕 However, you have discussed some very good points that can be helpful. I'm also an Australian Veteran just to clarify a bit more. I became a counsellor and help people along with the veteran community with many issues. I've had quite a few Vets who get stuck on that old saying "The Army trained me to be a soldier but didn't train me to be a civilian" well, there is no training to be a civilian, it's not a title that is earned it's just a word. The main issue is qualifications and skills and how they can be adapted to a new life outside. I'm not sure how it goes in the U.S but in Australia, we can have our qualifications mapped over to civilian and they can show what types of jobs a person may be suited for. Unfortunately mine were security and counter-terrorism occupations, which didn't suit the injuries I sustained before my discharge. So I had to go back to the drawing board and find a new life on my own (which many of your points highlight) Australia doesn't have a G.I Bill so education can be limited for some Vets (money wise) to diploma level. When we're in, there is a "higher power" looking after career progression and you're spot on when you said all the resources are taken care of and we have to learn to depend on ourselves more. Hard for many Vets to do when they have mental health issues clouding their decision making skills along with added pressure to get employed, take care of family or whatever they individually face. Thank you.for taking the time to comment and add some real, no nonsense advice. I hope some people who click on this thread read what you wrote and it helps them🙂
