Hello, I’m Joe - I’m a guitar player, singer-songwriter, producer, recording engineer and teacher!
On this channel you’ll find my original songs, covers and solo fingerstyle guitar arrangements. My favorite music doesn’t fit neatly in a box so you may hear me play folk, blues, jazz, & classic rock - you can call it what you want; I feel honored to speak this timeless language of melody, harmony & rhythm.
I was born on May 25th 1991 in Kempsey, NSW, Australia. Since 2010 I have been based in the US and currently live in the Rocky Mountains of Montana with my wife, Genevieve (who teaches illustration on KZbin!).
I play Maton acoustic guitars, made in Australia (just like me) and am very proud to have my own signature instrument, the JR Signature!
In addition to song performances, you will also find guitar lessons, chord breakdowns, TAB, tutorials, gear reviews and other guitarist related content to help you stay inspired on the instrument.

My ear really gravitates toward the Silverback sound. It sounds great through my monitors and sub. I first saw one of these watching an Aussie busker playing a Maton here in CA years ago and immediately went home and built one out of an old snare piezo, a couple socks and a small but sturdy cardboard box (2”x2”x1/2”). It sounds great, although it’s sensitivity makes it tough to keep steady dynamics. Thanks for sampling these ✌🏼😁 You’re so freakin’ badass!!!

I have discovered a few things. The signal level coming out of Baby Grand is quite high and can have quite a high peak value. Its important not to overload any active stages that come after it. I have designed a short lead that has an attenuator inside. I think its about 10 dB. Then I feed it into a pedal that is a preamp with bass and treble controls. It has input gain and output level. It drives the amplifier that. I find with the attenuator in, the sound is clearer and much more like a kick drum sound with a nice attack to it. Very clean sound. That first preamp stage never overloads and you can hear it. Without the attenuator, the preamp sounds a little saturated or even distorted. Its just not as nice and much harder to get the sound right.

Very cool! I have a relatively smallish foot-stomp pedal that tends to not stay in place as well as I'd like...looks like the larger Silverback, Bunyip or the Wazinator "Classic" would be good options for an upgrade! Thanks for sharing this Joe :)

Thanks much for the review and comparison of the various stomp boxes - very enlightening! Presumably it was done "all things being equal" with your setup. I think the Silverback seems to have the most well rounded and rich sound, i.e. it sounds the most like a real drum with a little bit more mid range character than the others - some of them sounded a bit dead like you were just tapping on a microphone (which I understand that is effectively what is going on). Totally up to you, but I'd go with the Silverback whenever possible - just my 2 cents for what its worth.

Hey there! I own an ANNAlog (passive pickup), but it's a bit quiet for my purpose: I'm using a Roland Mobile Cube, and even when volume is on max, the kick sound still is not very loud. I wonder whether getting a Horse Kick would solve the problem, as it is an active unit (battery powered)? Can you confirm that an active unit is noticeably louder than a passive one? And is it possible to connect the Horse Kick directly to an 1/8" AUX input? Thank you.

Hi, really interested in this. I just sent the wazzinator back it sounded great but I found it was airy .. and more mid range it was hard to EQ Through the small pa I have. I think the biggest issue with all these boxes are that it is a partnership between what you amp it with. I have had many from logrythm and other makers.. I currently use a Roland SPD one ..as it is tuneable .. however there is a great deal to be said for the natural wood tones and passive pickups. Would love to try a wild dog at some point. They definately sounded the most full and deep at least through KZbin. Loved this vid thanks🙏

Great vid, thanks Joe. Have you heard of the Puck'n stompa made by Peterman? They're made out of hockey pucks. I've got the Mega Stomp which has three separate sounds to use. I like it, but wonder how its tone compares to the ones you've demonstrated here. Would there be a difference in stomp boxes housed predominantly in wood (like the ones you've shown here) and ones like the Peterman?

Question.. Can you stomp anywhere on each and get the same full sound ? When I stomp I don’t use my toe or heal but my whole flat foot.
@Joe_Robinson
@Joe_Robinson 2 жыл бұрын
If you use your whole foot you'll get a big fat sound on any of these. The boxes all sound differently depending on where/how you stomp on them. If you just tap them with your toe you'll get a smaller sound than if you really stomp it good

Hi, Joe. Where do you get bridge pins for your Maton? Do you use handcrafted pins?
@Joe_Robinson
@Joe_Robinson 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, I usually swap them out for ebony, rosewood or bone pins. They are pretty inexpensive and easy to find in the US. About $10 for a set, I think D’addario makes the wooden ones. It’s been a while since I bought some. They all sound a little different and the Maton’s seem to be a pretty standard pin size. Hope that helps!
