They were very good and quite different from any other 1990s band. I feel like they could have been produced better, however. The mix on their albums doesn't always do them justice.

I was a HUGE StP fan in the early-mid 90's. Core and (esp) Purple I played over and over. Was probably my favorite band for a year or two there (says a lot for me at that exact time period). I was super excited for whatever they had next, as I heard a new CD was coming fairly quickly after Purple was out..... Anyway, COMPLETE LET DOWN. They totally changed their sound. Suddenly they're trying to be the beatles or something, with Scott attempting to turn himself into some perverted cross between Jim Morrisson, Axle Rose, and Mick Jagger.. Where's the hard rock? What happened to stuff like Wicked Garden? Even their softer stuff from the earlier 2 albums, like Creep, Plush, Interstate Love Song, and (my favorite) Still Remains sounded way different than the new stuff. I never liked any of their music again, until Velvet Revolver, and that honestly probably has a lot to do with the fact that GnR was the first band I ever fell in love with (at age 7) and was probably my fav band overall growing up, AND I liked StP's 'harder' stuff. So I figured VR would be perfect, and at least a few songs didn't dissapoint (unfortunately, Scott kept up with the odd frontman disguise). TLDR: This album marked the end of the hard rockin' StP as we knew them in the early-mid 90's. RIP

@Barack W. Trump I guess the one's that loathed it were hoping for a Core part 2 followed by Core 3 etc. I'm a fan of all their stylistic changes from 1-4 am only starting now to listen to Shangri la... Like bowie so often changed his sound / style / image, stp too impressed me with that ability to reinvent themselves and really play within any genre they felt like without coming off as copping or faking it... Bowie had the advantage of something like 9 guitarists over the years and a slew of other musicians making it much easier. Stp songs from the Vatican is my overall favorite. Glad they didn't follow in the footsteps of say... ACDC and repackage the same album over and over.

Also the AC/DC comment is some crap lol.. They've done every kind of packaging you can think of. I used to own the Unplugged package that had every single live performance they played before Bon died.. So no they don't just repackage the same shit! They have just been around for almost 50 years so it probably just seems like that to people that aren't big fans.. Also AC/DC released an album at the latter part of 2020 and it was number 1 for months... Who else can do that lol... Don't talk smack about other great bands.. I love them both too much lol

the current era deeply, deeply depresses me in many regards, including music. idk... maybe this is always the pattern. "turn down that hippie crap and get a haircut!" but i've liked every era of popular music until recently. it's honestly difficult for me to even find indie/fringe stuff of today that i TRULY like. sure, somewhat-interesting mediocre decent/catchy stuff is all over the place. but very few things today seem extremely unique and make me go, "WOW," like a lot of pre ~2000s material. everything now seems not-novel.

Often thought STP was the Led Zeppelin of their era. So much talent in each member of their 4-piece, the shift in tone from album to album without compromising their brand of rock. Every one of their first 5 albums is masterful, classics that will hold up well years down the road. Solid music, larger-than-life front man. Absolute rock n' roll.

I will always be in love with the raw and bizarre way this song is mixed. If you don’t know what I mean, listen to this with headphones on. This song changed my life in terms of opening my eyes to the big possibilities of guitar rock in a psychedelic scope, mirrored by the beautiful chord progression and the “in the room” rhythm section sound. That percussion is a great addition: this song just fucking rules.

I'm commenting cause this one isn't about the friggin life of the commentator. The words man, the lyrics, the woman in the song. She's facinating. "She keeps her face bagged outside the door." I know exactly what that poor doomed Weiland was talking about. STP had four great songs but "Lady Picture Show" was the greatest.

I don't how to put it, but there is an interview of these guys (the living ones) from 2018 or so. And I perceive the Deleos' were talking smooth trash about Scott. In those interviews, Robert said that Scott came with a guitar riff for their Vatican album. the song was "tumble in the rough". So, Robert was smoothly mocking the way Scott played the riff, saying things like he don't play how guitar but he want it to learn. Then, Dean said to Scott in a scornful way something like: "ok, ok, we play it", like, shut up, we do the rest . All I want to say is: STP, you are awesome musicians, but don't mock your many years front man, who also was a great musician in his riff or tunes of his voice within your music. and still. like Still Remains, you STP, I know you are still looking for the voice of Scott Weiland, because you have an endless crush on him...

Such unique chord voicings in this song. You'd never know it because Scott's vocal melodies throughout are so hooky and fit the chords perfectly. That guitar solo has got to be one of the 'feeliest' solos ever recorded. I get goosebumps every time it opens up with the arppregiated pattern just before Scott returns with 'She doesn't know her name.' Truly a magical song!

This is the standout on the album. A real feel good song that stands the test of time. Melodic rock always oushines and outlasts the grungey styles and this is a testament to that.. This style of rock uplifts me where as Pearl Jam has me looking for a pistol to blow my brains out..
