So it's set up like a romantic-comedy about trying to cheer up a suicidal person and "teach" them to love life, but ends with them killing themselves anyways because depression doesn't work like that and can't be fixed with romantic-hijinks and "stern talking-tos"? On paper that actually sounds like a good and relevant concept.
@AlaskaRS
@AlaskaRS 4 жыл бұрын
I've seen it and I personally didn't find much issue with the film. Then again, I'm able bodied so I couldn't really take offence from that angle while others might. I support the right to die through euthanasia if your condition of life is severely detrimental to your comfort and happiness (like, constant physical pain). Don't think this movie was the most seamless argument for that though. Like you mentioned too about fixing depression with romance and a good talking-to. It's a good message to communicate that sometimes it's not possible to fix someone's depression just like that. Again, the movie probably wasn't the most seamless means of conveying that message.

Shame it was about as subtle as a hammer to the knee with it's "Drugs will fuck you over" message. It's why I personally prefer Trainspotting when it comes to films about depressing drug addicts. Since it is far more balanced in it's portrayal of the issue. Requiem is still a good film though.

+MrFireHead Interesting points - I've also seen Requiem For A Dream, but I always felt that the main theme of the film was that there are many different sides to addiction, that there are real people behind the scaremongering crime stories you see in the media. Including Trainspotting, I don't really think I've seen a film that makes drug taking on that kind of level seem any more glamourous than it actualy is - which is not at all.
@MatthewsStories
@MatthewsStories 8 жыл бұрын
hamstercom23 I feel that Trainspotting actually shows the human side of addiction as well. Especially with the scene where baby dawn dies and Renton's narration throughout. It's more obvious in the novel. Also I don't believe drug taking is glamours, but there are reasons people do it, which I feel Trainspotting shows accurately as well. Again in Renton's narration.

This movie seems ENTIRELY made from the perspective from an Able Bodied person who cannot fathom how quadriplegia works and imagines it as the worst possible thing that could ever happen to them. Hence why the movie treats it like a justification for the suicide in it of itself.

I believe it's either the author of the screenplay or the director was stated to have never extensively known a quadriplegic in their lives and it was so disgusting. it's so terrible that something like this would be exploited in such an awful way just to try and make you cry at the end. every fucking trailer is just "YOU'LL CRY FOR 10 YEARS OMGGGGGGG"

Oh no no no...I...just did make the mistake of visualising that...Stupid stupid pictural imagination. Why?Just why? How could that possibly be pertinent to the story or character development? That's just depressing and otiose. And weird. Mostly severely depressing though. Poor thing. Not that, as an author, I never wrote rape as drama (novelists are terrible human beings, take it from me), I did, yeah so I am sitting in glass house over here and should probably shut up...but boy...thank you for the mental image dear Gregory. ^^ Yup glad they cut *that* out of the movie, not that this piece of trash sounded uplifting without it. So you know what...Maybe they should have just been like: 'Screw it, we are a bunch of ignorant, sadistic dirtbags, we have gone as far as eugenics lets go all in, fellows chop chop - lets get this lady raped...in a maze...Hurrah!' 'Boss, is this an exploitation movie?' 'Can't you feel the romance?! Goodness, you cretins have no understanding of true art!' ......Shesh!
@utenafreak

I liked both the book and the movie, and I am so damn glad that rape as a way to create a "bond" of sorts for the main characters was taken out. It was cheap, and frankly didn't add anything to the story. In the movie, she's just modest, and that was enough without the " I was RAPED so I no longer wear anything that is remotely figure flattering."

when i saw the trailer for this movie i tought it was like a "romantic" version of "les intouchables", a french movie about a quadraplegic that is also awful rich but instead of emilia clarke he gets a sassy black male to take care of him, the only difference is that les intouchables is actually a good movie about friendship and the value value of life

The only reason why I cried at the end was because the deathbed scene reminded me of my late grandfather. I was actually surprised that the movie could elicit such a strong reaction from me and bring back grief I thought I had come to terms with, considering how this is a barebones romance story with a "twist" to the relationship. The main character, he's not the worst, but he's not the best either. Despite the fact that he was only really able to talk and have limited hand movement, he's not really sympathetic which doesn't help his likeability. He starts off by treating Amelia Clark's character with disdain and after she finally snaps, I don't get why he started warming up to her afterwards, maybe he admired her spunk? And his first attempt to bond with her... was to order her to watch a movie with him?! Which from the start shows the power imbalance of their relationship, because no matter how intimate they get, he still keeps the boss/employee power dynamic going. Even when he meets her parents and takes her on a vacation with him. As for the implications, it was disturbing how easily the movie could get me to side with his choice, before I caught myself and realized what it was doing. If they really pushed that the dude was in constant pain, like on top of being paralyzed, he's also a serious burn victim, then yeah, I could understand why he'd want to end his life. But as Brad and Sarah point out, this guy is rich, lives in a nice house, has a supportive and loving girlfriend and people who care a great deal about his happiness, and aside from limited mobility, doesn't seem to be in any serious discomfort or pain. It makes him seem selfish to want to end it all. Makes the theory that he's suffering from depression all the more plausible. Hell, if the twist WAS that he had depression all along, it would actually be a fairly good twist. Both the characters and the audience comes to the shocking realization that his behavior, that they chalked up to his being bored, determined, etc, was actually because of a serious psychological issue. And they have to live with the pain of knowing that they could have helped him, had they seen the signs and not chalked it up to his personality. That would be a better justification for his choice, because depression IS a thing that leads to suicide and it would be able to show what actual depression is like, even if the ending is still unhappy.

The ending of Me Before You basically says to people who are disabled, "You have nothing to live for, so just hurry up and die." Whether it intended to or not, this book/movie sends a very insidious and destructive message about/to people with disabilities that their lives don't matter and that their very existence presents nothing but a burden to those around them. If the film-makers of this tripe had any guts or moral integrity, they would've tried to cast a quadriplegic actor for the part. They didn't because they are cowards and scumbags.
@handicapgaming9385
@handicapgaming9385 8 жыл бұрын
Dont lump quadriplegics in with all disabled. Being a quad is far worse than many others. I have little use of my legs but have my arms. I can 100% understand the decision of suicide no matter how hard people try to help
@DragonMaiden77
@DragonMaiden77 8 жыл бұрын
+HandicapGaming93 yeah i have a disease where I always feel horrible pain and I've lost the use of my legs. It's been a really tough ride and some days suicide seemed like the only answer but I kept going, and quadriplegics can lead a full functioning and even adventurous life. That doesn't mean other people problems aren't less important, but I can understand the feeling of being suicidal and losing hope. There is also that spark in life and the will and love of it to carry on

I've been thinking about watching Eyes Wide Shut, but the premise never draws me in and I can imagine watching all three hours of it - and this is from someone who really likes 2001: A Space Odyssey.

"The Theory of Everything" seems like a good shout for an alternative movie to watch. The story about Stephen and Jane Hawking. Although they should have also called it "The Amazing Mr. No Legs".

"Me before you" also refers to who Lou and Will were before they, individually, knew each other. Took me a few moments to figure that out too.

Thank you! Vanilla Sky is awesome and I liked it more than Open Your Eyes! Apparently there is an alternate ending to the movie in the recent blu ray so I have to check that out.

I remember watching Vanilla Sky so many times back when Netflix was primarily a DVD service. I had an unhealthy obsession with watching that movie for some reason. This was also back when I wasn't turned off to Tom Cruise and his Scientological views. But after he started mouthing off on things like postpartum depression and jumping on Oprah's couch, I never watched another TC movie after that.

Sarah looks like Gillian Anderson X-Files-era; very cute!^^ It's always nice to see the two of you just enjoying yourselves; so glad you still get along so well. As for the movie....it's not gonna happen. Just..no. Especially since there's neither wolverines nor Peter Venkmans in it. And yay, fellow Ghostbustersll likers!*hug* There's too few of us

I read the book, and both my aunt and mom wanted to see this movie until I warned them about the ending. They both really love romance movies, and I knew this is one that they might not want to see once they knew the ending just because of the emotions that it brings up about. In fact, I couldn't finish the book because of the ending. It just really upset me about what happened.

I remember previews of this movie. I'm a caretaker to my mother who is completely disabled, and I could just tell it wouldn't show a realistic, gritty view of caretaking. I could be wrong, but I just can't see her changing his diapers, treating his pressure sores, and dealing with his constipation.

I can somewhat see the appeal of a story in which love doesn't stop someone from killing themselves. It sort of tells people that it because they did not love someone enough isn't a reason that someone killed themselves. On the other hand... the plot to this sounds horrible.
