Mary Chapin Carpenter and I were born three weeks and fifty miles apart. She sings the stories of my life. In the summer of 1967, I watched on TV as Newark burned. The next spring my mother took me with her to register voters in Newark. I was never scared - our being there seemed entirely natural. In June, Bobby Kennedy (mom's candidate) was assassinated and we went to a vigil at a Newark church. And yes, I remember the sanctuary of our safe suburban town, riding my bike those summer days.

Thiss song is, for me, immensely emotional. I'm a "soixante huitard", (rioting in Paris) and had been involved in protests earlier in the 60s. Yes, the song just resonates as "we climb the ladder rung by rung". Whatever happened to our spirit of protest? The determination to protest has once more been reborn. Too many wrongs by less than mediocre politicians, and evil corporatocracies!

Joan Baez and MCC, two true gifted and courageous legends of our time. What a great contribution to our human experience with the Stones in the Road song. Lyrics about life so brilliantly put to music.

This is a wonderful video of this fantastic song. The commentary by both Joan Baez & Mary Chapin Carpenter make it even more special. I do wish they included more of Joan singing, but beggars can't be choosers & I'm thankful for what has been posted.

Great performance, but when I first watched the "Live at Wolf Trap" concert, I was disappointed that they didn't show the whole Chapin/Baez duet, and switched to MCC singing solo after the first verse.

One of her best songs. But there are so many. No other song captures the failures of my generation (baby boomers) so poignantly.
