Every time down the years, someone's said to me that heavy metal vocalists can't sing, I direct them to this song without telling them who he is. My son and I always loved this song. My son passed away january 27, 2019. I cherish the fact I took him to his first slipknot concert before he passed away. It was so memorable that I was able to do that for him and, we had a lot of fun and, an amazing time together.

@@johnnyjohnson1326 thank you for the kind words JJ. My kids are the main reason I never went through with it either. I struggled for years with those feelings and desires. I had a lot of pain and when I went to work it was very stressful and coming home to a narcissistic wife made my life a living hell. She had actually encouraged me on a few occasions to go ahead and kill myself. I hadn’t opened myself up to her to tell her that I was already wanting to do so and had tried. God has since blessed me with a wife that truly loves and appreciates me and she has helped me work through these feelings. It’s good to have support. I’ve also had some friends to show me love and support. It was hard at first to open up to others but I’m glad I did. I have had 3 friends take their own life in the past 10 years and I’ve watched as their families are left devastated by it. I pray that you have a support system and that you are able to have some relief as I have finally found.

An addict I will always be, but in recovery I will stay. I felt connected to this song well before I discovered drugs, and this song was my recovery song. I haven't touched anything in over 8 years, and I am so proud of how far I have gotten. What makes me more proud is that I did it alone. I had friends who never knew about my struggles with drugs, hid it from my family, and suffered in silence. But the same way I suffered, I began to find my inner strength, my willingness to quit, and my willingness to learn and grow. 8 years ago, I never would have thought this life possible, 8 years later and I just wish I could hug my past self and let her know, life will still be challenging, but it looks a lot brighter. Through the years, I listened to this song when I was struggling, sang my heart out to it, pouring myself into every lyric just to break my urges to break my sobriety. Honestly I will thank Corey Taylor for helping me through my sobriety.

Chuck I don't see it that way. Yes we had and will have issues with substances that alter mood, mind, but we don't consume those so why do we declare were this or that? If u used to be a janitor, now urr a welder, u don't meet ppl and say I'm a janitor. No urr a welder. We're not saying were perfect, or whatever. All of us suffered some trauma, usually abuse of sexual nature, that got us here wanting to be numb all the time. We didn't aspire to b drunks, or whatever. Cause and effect. I don't like when we who have these disorders say we're addicts, alcoholics, etc. I WAS a drunk, I WAS using alcohol to a unsafe level, I WAS not a good person, I WAS doing harm to myself to be numb to life cause of this effed up event, events, that happened to me. When I was a kid I saw these lyrics written on a bridge at a local lake: "I wish I had a reason, my flaws are open season. For this I gave up trying, one good turn deserves my dying." For years I was haunted by this because I didn't know they were lyrics and thought I had found someone's suicide note. It only just occurred to me that these might be lyrics, so I googled them and ended up here. That's one big mystery of my life solved... I just hope whoever felt like quoting this song at the lake was doing all right when they wrote that.

I feel this song is about depression and self loathing. How he's slipping further and further into depression and nothing can stop it except death itself. Personally, when I get depressed I always imagine myself thirty or fifty years from now. Old and too tired to care. Knocking on the door of my next home. This thought alone puts me in a depressed state. this song speaks to me on so many levels. Depression is one hell of a disease and is key for great songwriting.

This song is a pinpoint description of the pain and torment in a person's brain with depression and anxiety as well as substance addiction. So if you ever want to know what the thinking is like of someone with depression, just listen to the words of this song. Stay strong my friends! Always light at the end of the tunnel even though sometimes we can't see that light. One of my all time favorite songs. This song helped me through the roughest time in my life. I've beaten alcoholism by myself with zero support what so ever. I had not one friend left by the time I quit.Ive repaired most relationships that we're destroyed by alcohol but some still haven't been repaired. I've almost got my depression beat as well. I knew once I got rid of alcohol that my depression would slowly get better and it has.i never had depression before I started drinking heavy. No pills, no therapy, no rehab, just good ol fashioned will power but most of the credit goes to God for showing me the way. If you don't believe in God it's only because you have never had a spiritual connection or don't understand how. One day something will happen and you will just know there is someone watching over you and guiding you. Not trying to bring religion in this because I respect everyones own beliefs but respect mine too. Been well over 18 months and still feel better and better everyday that passes without booze. Don't think for a second that alcohol is safe just because it's socially acceptable. That was my mistake and didn't realize that alcohol is one of the most destructive drugs on this planet when abused. It destroys relationships in the long run and will destroy your life. Nothing will matter except getting that next drink and feeding the demon/addiction. You don't need rehab and you don't need medication to quit. You need to get angry to fight addiction. You got to get mad at the addiction and you got to hate it even if you like it. Hate it for all the relationships it's destroyed, hate it for all the potential it took away, hate it for making you sick, hate it for ruining your life. Once you build up enough hate for alcohol, then boom destroy your addiction and quit for good, then take your life back that the addiction stole from you. If you slip up, oh well that's part of the process, just start over but never give up ever. Took me six times over 2 years to finally quit for good. I never thought I could quit. If I can do it, everyone can do it! Eventually you won't ever want to touch it again. Alcohol will kill you just as easy as any other hard drug. Don't be a fool if your abusing alcohol or alcohol is abusing you. If your a responsible drinker, more power to you but wasn't that way for me. It takes months if not years to fully beat alcohol 100%. It takes a long time for your brain to repair the damage alcohol causes. It's easy after first 4 months. Alcohol will turn people into something their not or a different person. It brought out the worse in me. Don't know why I felt obligated to write this but if it helps one person it was worth it. Stay strong my friends! I'm sure I wasn't the only alcoholic that listened to this song when drinking. Now it's a memory of everything ive accomplished since quitting. If you can't do it for yourself, do it for your family and friends!

I got Bi-Polar Depression alongside a shopping list of other fucked up shit (I'm only 19 mind you so despite my experiences, a lot of which I'd rather forget, I'm sure there's more to come) and it's cool reading other people's stories. I can't share my story because I'm still fighting and it isn't over yet. I'm winning though and I always appreciate these stories because if someone needs to know that there's hope, I can tell them about someone who's overcome it all, that I'm fighting to do the same and the person in need can do it too. I am extremely grateful for your addition of doing if for your loved ones if you can't for yourself because a lot of people tell their stories but leave out that very important detail. The stories may help but if the person in need doesn't realize they're not alone and there's people who care about them, it could end up being told in vain. Thank you for adding that because that bit has such a harder impact in times like these than people realize. They get so caught up in the story they forget to remind the person who or what makes it all worth it. You weren't obligated to write this, but you're a good man with good intentions and you had the courage to act on that feeling. I know now it was the alcohol talking. Unfortunately I had to hit rock bottom to see what a piece of shit I had become. I've done so many great things since quitting. I'm just so grateful to be able to quit and so optimistic about life in general. Sure things can still be hard from time to time but learning how to handle problems without substance abuse is the key. Eventually it becomes easy and in general I'm just a way happier person since quitting. I felt really alone when I was a alcoholic and I pretty much was. No one wants to be with someone who is destroying their life. I'm very fortunate that most of my relationships we're fixed. I know it sounds corny but I'm just high on life now a days. There is just so much I missed out on for so many years. I look forward to the future now but when I drank I dreaded the next day always. My body is so much healthier now! It's never too late to quit. The thing that most people don't understand is it takes your body a lot of time to heal itself after a addiction but it will get better and better everyday that passes.
