2:31 you skipped the part where you remove the adjustment screw with the 5/32nds allen key. Trying to take that switch apart without doing that will only frustrate and risk breakage.

First of all, thanks for the video. Quick story! We spent December and half of January in Gulf Shores Alabama. During this time there were several days where the temps were in the low 20's. Even though we had full hookups, several of the campers experienced a water pump issue. We did not check ours at the time and found on our way back to Texas our pump had issues. Remembering the campers ALL said their failures were pressure switches, I decided to just replace mine to see if the problem went away. I found your video first and followed your lead not only in the repair but also in what you ordered. So yesterday I ordered, and today I fixed the problem. GREAT INFORMATIVE VIDEO!!!

Ive had 2x 4009's and 1x 4048 shurflo pumps, ALL 3 had intermittent connection issues with the pressure switch, one even failed within 3 months. Ive had the head of the unit vibrate away from the body because the bolts they used were not quite long enough also. Everything is utter junk now, the threads on them are plastic making cross threading connections very VERY easy to do and replacing that is 2/3 the cost of the whole pump of course. At the minimum each pump should come with a spare replacement switch instead of making tens of thousands of us go without running water for days to weeks until we can replace it... Thanks for discovering this cheap fix, Im an off grider for life so you will save me many hundreds over my life.

Great video! Recently, I spoke the the manufacturer of this pump, Pentair / Shurflo, they told me the reason they only provide a one year warranty for this pump is because the brush wears out. If you camp off grid a lot, the life of these brush motor water pumps are 1-3 years. A common sign of failure is that pump flow reduces a bit and goes out unexpectedly. If a company made one with brushless motor, it would last a lot longer but I could find no upgrade. For $65 - 75, you’re better off replacing the entire pump because on my rig, it takes about an hour to remove and install plus the backache of working in a tight space.

I enjoy sharing what we learn. Of the many components in the camper, I find the water pump is one of the most important. We can use our jugs, but a spare is small and easy to replace. Finding out that the old broken pump could be fixed fir $4 was just an added bonus. No need to buy a new one.

All these pumps have the same achilles heal (Cycles kills the micro switch). You can add an accumulator to the system to reduce the cycling or get a pump with a bypass so the pump still runs when less flow is demanded (in Lieu of cycling the microswitch). The best fix seems to be to add a Solid State Relay to take the heavy switching current and thus reduce the arcing significantly. The SSR does the heavy lifting based on the small current switching of the micro. This video is a fantastic example of what is going wrong. Great job pulling it down tot he root cause 🙂
@Stonyboot
@Stonyboot Жыл бұрын
Wow, amazing comment. Thank you. I’m have an accumulator which helps. I have my eyes on a bypass pump someday, but it hasn’t quit yet. I’ll look into the solid state relay. I’m going to guess that you’re an electrical/electronics engineer?

Thank you for this video on how to make a very inexpensive repair. I did give you a thumbs up for your video. Although this has nothing to do with your excellent video and instructions, the problem with the Shurflo water pumps (particularly this model (4008) is that they are so dang loud! Particularly noticeable in a smaller rig. I came across your channel while looking for solutions to replace my Shurflo 4008.

Thanks for the comment. In regards to the sound. Try adding a flexible tube to the inlet and outlet side. Leave a loop in the flexible tubes (make the shape of an O) and then connect back to the factory lines. Also, make sure that your PEX pipes are secured properly and not vibrating against the walls. Just the flexible tubes do a good job of insulating the vibration, but there are other steps you can take. Adding an accumulator tank can also help quiet the system.

DC voltage/amps are hard on contacts, they deteriorate after some wear,that contact is on the positive line. Also if your pump keeps blowing a fuse your battery may be going bad, as the voltage drops the current will increase and could blow fuse, before it burns up the pump.

Thanks for the video! Definitely helped me understand the internal workings of that. I purchased a brand new one of these pumps for my self built conversion van and immediately had trouble with it. I found if I move those wires where they plug, it was almost like it was changing the sensitivity of it. I could push on it and the pump would turn on or off prematurely. I returned that pump and purchased another and have had no problems with it until recently. It started acting up, and when I move those wires around it does that same thing as the one I returned. Did you happen to notice if that switch was pretty loose in the housing? Because that would explain what I’m seeing..

I've had my camper for 8 years. I RV full time. I just replaced the water pump for the second time. The first time was years ago and there was black plastic debris under the water pump so something spinning went bad. It was so long ago I don't recall taking it apart to see what it was. I'm not even sure if I saved it with that intention. This time when it went out it had symptoms for the past year. It seemed like it was shutting off when the RV wasn't level because I'd go out and push on the pump body and it would start working again. Just before it stopped working this time I pressed on the lower assembly and it started to work but only for a little bit. I hooked up to water and was able to turn it over but once I turned off the hose feed. The pump wouldn't work. I don't think it's the pressure switch. I'm leaning toward the lower assembly being messed up. I'll take it apart this time to see. I might be able to replace the lower abd have this as a spare. I may have been able to do that last time...

I don’t, sorry. Basically, you need to release the pressure from the system, unscrew the water line from both sides of the pump and then unscrew the pump from wherever it’s mounted. In my case, I had to cut the wires (pull the fuse out first) and then re-wire it when I put it back. Some campers come with a handy plug that makes it easier to disconnect it.

Sounds like the pressure switch. That is another common issue. They are adjustable, but I’d suggest getting a replacement pump and then seeing if you can fix the old one. Especially if this is a business. They aren’t that expensive and then you’d have a spare.

Nice repair! On a different fix - have you adjusted your mixing valve for hot water? Searching your content.....
@Stonyboot
@Stonyboot 3 жыл бұрын
I did adjust it, and now I leave it wide open. When we are on city water with constant pressure the temp stays consistent. When we run off the pump and stop/start the water flow. The temperature varies a lot. We’ve gotten used to controlling it manually since the mixing valve didn’t stop the scalding water. I have some ideas on how to fix it, but it’s at the bottom of my list. We are visiting NuCamp soon and would like to run it by their techs. It could be defective or we could have a bad check valve. It’s been my experience that RVs don’t usually have consistent water temperatures unless the water flow stays steady. That wastes water, so we deal with temperature fluctuations.

@@Stonyboot Thanks for reply. My wife uses more water to shampoo hair. While boondocking, I usually take a Navy shower - leave water to drip (wife calls it a spit shower). Then increase flow for quick rinse. On city water & sewer now to adjust mixing valve. Will switch to pump tomorrow to test settings.

the switch goes bad on these pumps all the time the best fix is to put a inline pressure switch in from amazon it requires a tee fitting to be put inline 1/4 npt the water pump switch gets water in them and makes them fail ,quality inline switch will last forever and you don't have to remove water pump to replace the switch

That's a great idea! I've never even heard of that, I'll go check it out now. Thank you!

The switch controls the cycling of the pump. Pressure is controlled by a set screw that changes how much pressure it takes for the pump to cycle on and off. The issue I was fixing was the pump was not cycling consistently. It keept stopping and not starting again until I tapped it with something. You can adjust the pressure set point on most RV pumps using an Allen wrench.

no, the switch just shuts off the power to motor, does not increase pressure

Easy to do when you can get to your water pump. Try doing it on a 2022/23 Winnebago Travato 59G. I did it yesterday after my water pump refused to pump water. Voila! It now works again.
