Go Here to Download Your Book - www.myboxingcoach.com - You have an aggressive opponent who likes to commit to the attack, what are your options? Well there's all kids of things you can do, but a fantastic way to use their weight against them is to go with the right cross to the body.
What matters when using the right cross to the body is that we get 3 things right - technique, target and time.
The ideal technique for the right cross to the body involves combining 2 skills; the right cross and the duck.
With the right cross it's important that we begin the execution of the punch with the drive from the back foot. This back foot drive enables a rotation of the upper body through the hips. The rotation is around the centre axis and we must avoid under-rotating or leaning forward with the punch.
The duck is the most simple body movement that a boxer does; straight back and bend at the knees. By combining the right cross with the duck we get the perfect right cross to the body.
The 2nd 'T' is the target. The right cross to the body is about targeting the vital organs just below the lower rib. So, take 3 fingers below the sternum and an inverted 'V' gives us the target area. When using the right cross to the body, don't aim for the abdominal muscles, you need to be precise.
The final 'T' is timing - we want to use the right cross to the body ideally against an advancing opponent (so that we can use their body weight against them) or at least against a static opponent. The right cross to the body is not very effective against a retreating opponent.
When we have landed the right cross to the body (or not), think about what comes next. You can press home the attack with the left hook, double-down on your attack. Alternatively you can push away laterally or diagonally or even cover up and duck into close range. In any scenario, make sure you think about 'what comes next' after you've landed your right cross to the body.
Would love to hear your thoughts.
Cheers
Fran

"Think about the exit after you landed the shot." Now lives in my mind.

It's worth it to practice exiting/countering as often as possible. Think about your first couple of shots NOT landing and having a plan you can rely on nearly reflexively. And also that your hands are never dropping on the way back to guard without your consciously choosing that.

I've aged out of sparring but got to say even for stopping some clown from starting a fight , too many people ignore body shots like this. Untrained people can't handle them. They've never been hit with them and they'll stand flat footed in front you , usually squared up, chin in the air staring at your face . Some will even hold their arms out to the side and welcome you! BUT they think you'll swing at their head like 99% would. I practice a LOT of body shots on my BOB as an opening , sternum, liver , pancreas, bladder . You get one of those in you're likely dropping them and they won't even see it coming . And they aren't going to fall like a stone and hit their head like from a KO and YOU end up in jail. Thanks Coach! Another great video.

Nice explanation! As a Southpaw (against Orthodox), I do the left straight with a slip to the right, timing my opponent's jab. Against stationary opponents it's R-jab slip L-straight, and either R-hook to the short ribs or over the top.

I’m a southpaw that’s my favourite combo. I was shown how to swap my feet. Left foot goes where where the right foot was and you pivot. Can land a nice left hook to the body or head from the side. It goes well with the straight left and slip because your body will go wherever your head goes.

Thanks for this Fran. I’ve been practicing this for a while but you have explained it better than what I had previously seen. I’ve landed it a few times in sparring but to no effect, probably because they were moving backwards. I’ve got the mechanics down so it shouldn’t be too difficult to adjust the timing.

Thank you sir for this precious lesson! I have been doing boxing for 4 years, but at a deeply amateur level (issues with health and so on). Would you agree that most of practiced methods don't work so nice during the sparring with a fast and experienced opponent?)) I have this feeling every weekend during our sparring sessions. If you spar a novice (I do it always softly, unlike those crazy novices:) - then yes, of course, I can try all those beautiful check hooks, but when my partner is more experienced than me - I try a lot of punches and techniques, but they hardly work!))

Nice technique , but I would call that a right straight and not a right cross. The “cross” used to refer to a slightly wider punch delivered across your body for maximum power (see Joe Louis) it was not fired straight out like a piston

@@distinctiveartflow4197 That was the original definition of the cross . But later it was interpreted as the ops definition. Cross is basically a counter punch to the lead left. But later the lead left and straight right began to be termed as jab and cross.

In theory are taller individuals more susceptible to damage from smaller or shorter apponents, often taller or heavier individuals have the belief someone with less weight and height cannot defeat them for these reason but can techniques over come larger peoples advantages (weight and height?)

"Never hit a bag without hand protection." Whoops! I've only broken that rule several times now😂. I was told hand conditioning is important and sometimes that means barehanded or wrapped. Not hitting AS hard, but punchinh like you're smashing a poison bug😂 You don't want to hit it so hard you splatter it so much as hit it light and fast. With a glove, you can hit harder but still don't want to "stick" the punch to the bug/bag. I don't do it very often though. Certainly not every session. How do YOU get hands conditioned? In your experience, do you find bags and such are enough to condition them? (I actually DON'T want to be doing anything stupid. I don't have kids hands😂).
@stevendavies6209
@stevendavies6209 5 ай бұрын
I find it is hard for most fighters between training and to zeroing real targets when sparring as you don't always hit hard and not really execute the true potential of the punch. I believe in conditioning the hands but have broken my knuckles in a true street fight to the head. The body is the way forward as the coach has demonstrated. The average thug is looking at you straight on which makes it easier for a take down.
