This video was supposed to be a defense for the recent Pixar original films like Luca, Turning Red, and Elemental. But after seeing a fair amount of discourse against recent shows like Amphibia, and seeing all of the sequels and remakes being announced, I realized that most of the problems I have with media discourse boils down to nostalgia; and I find that extremely infuriating.

"Change can be difficult, but it's how we grow. It can be the hardest thing to realize you can't hold on to something forever. Sometimes, you have to let it go. But of the things you let go, you'd be surprised what makes its way... back to you." - Anne Boonchuy from the episode "The Hardest Thing" I believe this quote fits very well in terms of nostalgia. IT IS the hardest thing to let go of something, so we desperately try to hold it on for as long as possible, even at the insult of new things.

That Amphibia situation on twitter was so dumb and I regret making a video about it. But to the point, nostalgia itself is never a bad thing. It's how it gets used or how we try to justify is when it becomes a problem. I'm 31 years old, I have shows I grew up with that I know are different from today's programming for a multitude of reasons. But I still want to give new shows a try if they appeal to me in some fashion. If it's a good show and I don't vibe with it, the most I can do is not watch it. Let others enjoy their shows. A lot of shows and movies want to tell different stories that are based upon our individual experiences of the world, and I think that's great. Let's encourage more of that. Let more voices be heard. Let's just... have fun.

I think that a good way to perceive nostalgia is to treat it as the world you want. Work to make things be like the way you nostalgically see them, if something was genuinely better in the past, work to make it that way again. If you remember a creation to be better than it is, work to create something similar but in the way that you perceived it to be. Nostalgia is my driving force, I am shaping the things I make by basically inverting nostalgia bias, it’s great, y’all’s should try it

Thank you. It's so damn annoying to see this. An exemple I would like to mention is the Total Drama Reboot. The casual fans (not the fandom itself, but the "oh yeah, I liked it as a kid" people) are so blinded by nostalgia that they became incredibly annoying genwunners. When the newest cast was revealed, these people obviously complained, saying that they still wanted Gen 1, which has already been run into the ground, especially in season 5. It's like they forgot about that. In the end tho, the new cast became the second most beloved cast after the first one, with some saying that it's even better than the first one. Also, honestly, these nostalgic people make me worry that Fairly Oddparents A New Wish will get cancelled because it's more niche than the original and I'm worried that not many people outside of the fandom would give it a chance because of nostalgia bias

You have valid reasons there. The main reasons I was never truly interested in some of Pixar’s more recent films like Luca and Turning Red is primarily because of their use of very tired tropes I mostly could not stand even back in “the good old days” (bullies). Yet that’s just a personal pet peeve I have and I respect the films as such that are worth watching for others. I was skeptical about Elemental but I watched it and had a decent experience, as I can relate to it a bit in a way, as I’m an American immigrant turned citizen in France. Also I find Amphibia to be quite cool.👍

I'm kinda mixed on this video. Yeah nostalgia can hurt the views of modern stuff both animated I won't argue there (That drama with Amphibia is just dumb) and I also agree that people need to embrace new stuff more, but IMO, nostalgia should also be viewed nowadays as well as embracing new stuff. Not the way Disney is doing it with live action and remakes but when it comes to new shows like introducing shows like Phineas and Ferb and the DuckTales reboot for a new audience to experience. For example, I for one am excited for the new Phineas and Ferb revival even though people have some concerns with it. But Hamster and Gretel while having a premise done before in newer shows is at least interesting and great to watch IMO. On the opposite end of that spectrum, as much as I like the original DuckTales series, I can't deny (and II'm gonna get a ton of hate for saying this) but some stuff of the show has not aged well, but we now have the reboot that in many ways surpassed the original and more memorable. I do apologize if my thoughts are jumbled, but there's a lot I wanted to say caus ewith this video there's a ton I agree with and some that I disagree with.

I think they’re right about Turning Red! Why would any Pixar fan want to see a teenage girl twerking in a family movie? And that Nostalgia Bait isn’t even the fault of viewers, it’s the executives and officers of the companies that are pandering so hard, they refuse to let any original creations thrive. And for TTG, while not necessarily the worst cartoon from Cartoon Network, has been going on for longer than it should, I mean, 11 years and the show still hasn’t run out of ideas yet. Why should we change if the companies behind the oversaturation of successful shows are doing anything but?

The thing is Inside Out 2 had an amazing story most sequels, prequels, spin-offs, remakes, reboots and adaptations are to lazy to have a good story and abuse nostalgia, and have that emotion be the only reason the film makes a product. Nostalgia isn’t necessarily bad and ruining the film industry, it’s corporate laziness.

This is very true, I am one of those people who tend to remember only good nostalgic moments, and completely forget the bad ones. But right now I'm trying to remember things more honestly, including all the stengths AND flaws. For example, as a kid I LOVED Disney's "Hercules", but as I rewatched it (about a year ago) I realized how much sеxism is in this movie. The character of Phil, who I thought was very funny as a child, now I think is kinda dіsgusting in a lot of moments. So, I don't see this movie as a perfect masterpiece anymore, but it doesn't mean that everyone should hаtе it or something. It still has great animation, songs, story, etc. It just isn't perfect, as many people blindеd by nostalgia might think.

People nowadays mainly think Nick does nothing but milk that sponge and The Silent House to death, which yeah technically they are some of Nickelodeon’s most well-known franchises in modern times, that DOESN’T mean that they don’t make anything good anymore, or that they disrespect their older properties (unless if it’s stuff like the new Sandy Cheeks movie). I mean Glitch Techs, FOP A New Wish, and Nickelodeon’s own TMNT reboots were pretty well-recieved. I can’t really imagine someone thinking that they’re trash unless if they’re just petty nostalgia-blind (if u dont like these shows no offense and u may have valid points, but plz don’t use “it’s not what I grew up with” as an excuse.) And while Nick’s future may not look the brightest and it’s reputation has been incredibly hindered by a certain creepy individual, it’s not like Im gonna give up knowing what new stuff they have in store. You just never know until you find out! If anything, I’m just scared that they’ll rely TOO MUCH on nostalgia without giving their lesser-known cartoons a chance. this conversation goes al over. Bottom line nostalgia not bad. There is hate for original ideas and demand for more of what used to exist Hate for old franchises and demand for new ideas Hate for changes to old things Love for changes to old things And both hate and love for sexualizing characters , letting them enter puberty, giving them a Canon physical attraction A lot of peoples anger at new original ideas is. It has the wrong amount of sex, profanity , violence or wrong main focus. A feeling that new shows censor too much or don't censor enough Its not just nostalgia, its change in morals Intolerance of art quality and technology writing styles and messages Bottom line our sides have been around for decades. Today we hate on Caped Crusader but when it first came out people hated on Tim Burton's Batman for much the same reason. Its not so much nostalgia, its how much or how little sex, blood, nudity, profanity, we want our or other people's children to be exposed too.

I haven’t seen elemental yet and I might’ve been too young to really appreciate soul. (19 when it released.) but I absolutely loved turning red and Luca so I completely get where you’re coming from with how nostalgia can really damage our enjoyment of modern classics and how hypercritical comparison is the thief of joy.

I needed to hear this badly. I hate when Pixar stans glorify the classic films stating that their films were hardly schmaltzy when in reality they’ve mostly been schmaltzy in its lessons and moments. Even The Incredibles did. EmpLemon’s video on Pixar was revolting to me.

My favourite trait about myself is the lack of being blinded by nostalgia I loved minecraft as a kid but I know minecraft is better now I also think that Mario kart 8 and smash bros ultimate are better than the previous games I grew up with (Mario kart wii and smash bros wii u)

Criticisms I can levy against old pixar movies: 1. Wall-E: The first act is so ambitious in comparison to everything that goes on in the 2nd and 3rd that it makes the film feel a bit lobsided. 2. The Incredibles: Has strong themes of exclusionary exceptionalism that has caused thousands of neurotypical creators online to see neurodivergent people as non-adaptable to certain environments. 3. Monster's Inc. : Boo's Costume Fools everyone, despite what Mike says at the start of using it where it looks fake as h3ll to him.

The future is darker than ever and we can’t keep going back on our best moments for comfort, we all have to accept that our highest points are over, we aren’t getting them back and that it only gets worse from here. What we all need to do now js bond together and accept defeat, life is getting harder to live than ever and theirs no point in fight back Just lay down and let your world burn. You lost.

This discussion reminds me of Anton Ego's Review from Ratatouille: "In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over others in which they offer up their work and their selves to our judgement. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the important thing we critics must face is--in the grand scheme of things--the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the 'new.' The world is often unkind to new talent, new creations. The 'new' needs friends. Last night I had experienced something new: an extraordinary meal, from a singularly unexpected source. To say that both the meal and its maker have challenged my preconceptions about fine cooking is a gross understatement. They have rocked me to my core..."
