Blew up a Tattu at our club just 2 weeks ago by dumping current into the pack at 20amps and at 30volts just using the main lead on an extention and telling the charger its a 8s lipo... without a balance lead....

@ReasonRaider

Let me correct you, “if your battery is puffy” take it outside immediately and dump it in a bucket of water with a wet rag over the top, leave it there overnight away from any flammable objects (preferably in your driveway just in case there is a fire or it gets out of hand so others can see it). “If your battery gets hot while charging” either turn down the amperage but if it’s already lower than 1.5 Amps, (on most lipos) dispose of it immediately at the closest battery disposal if your lipo has any of the other signs mentioned in this vid. A lot of these videos fear monger beginners but if you take all the right steps your batteries can last for years and you won’t have to worry about it catching fire at all. Unless any of these signs have popped up and you have good habits you only need to check resistance bi-monthly if you want to be extra safe. Personally I have never checked resistance in the 3 years I have owned LIPOs but it’s definitely a good habit to get into for newer people. And YES ALWAYS CHECK AFTER CRASHING PLEASE!!!

I've been using lipos since they were a thing... never had an issue. Last year I got 2x CNHL new batts. Put them on gentle charge in my condo.... (I'm in Thailand....there's no smoke alarms or fire protection or anything in the entire 300 unit condo). I was playing on my PC when suddenly couldn't see for smoke. I grabbed the charger threw out to balcony where one continued to burn itself out. Took me a few weeks for my lungs to recoup from the smoke inhalation. I still have no idea why one just went bang...especially brand new...and in parallel charge with another, which, to this day is still working fine. Since then I have bought a big steel toolbox, charge outside and never more than 2 at a time.

Very informative. Thanks. I think, For a 2200 mAh (2.2 Ah) battery, let's assume it's a standard 3-cell LiPo battery with a nominal voltage of 11.1V (3.7V per cell). Wh=2.2Ah×11.1V=24.42Wh

A coworker of mine lost her house to a fire caused by a lipo battery being charged. Her son was charging an RC car battery in the garage, and no one thought anything of it. They decided to run some errands, and when they came back, the house was already fully engulfed with the fire department already on scene. The house was a total loss. Fire investigators determined that the source of the fire was what used to be lipo batteries on a charger. It took the better part of a year to get everything sorted out. Between lodging, insurance, losing nearly everything they owned, having to buy a new house... in addition to the obvious toll to her emotionally, which was clear to see every day when she came into the office. Just be careful. Know the dangers and take all the reasonable precautions, but enjoy the hobby. Best.

4 button charger? Is that supposed to be a bad thing?🤔
@BrodieReed
@BrodieReed Жыл бұрын
Not necessarily a 'bad thing' but I would never recommend picking one up now. It's much better to use a charger that's a bit smarter, shows you the voltage and resistance of the individual cells, and also allows for higher amps when needed. 4-button chargers are still okay, and if you have one you can certainly still use it, I just found a world of better change when I switched to a budget 'smarter charger' ✌️
@Fly_High_FPV
@Fly_High_FPV Жыл бұрын
The old iMaxB6 was a 4button charger, that had a repuation for miss-reading cell voltage, overcharging cells and starting fires. Smart Chargers, like Hota, are better for your lipos, more intelligent, easier to use, and less likely to miss read 👍

Is it marginally safer to charge at slightly less than 1C, or is this just wasting time?
@BrodieReed
@BrodieReed Жыл бұрын
I would say the slower the safer technically, but 1C is a pretty standardised charge rate which weighs up time to safety

Lower c is safer, and will do less damage to the chemistry than 1C, but takes longer. I generally charge at 1C at home and 2C if i'm in a hurry (typically charging 20 packs on a pair of 4way Hota F6 chargers)

i keep mine in a spare ammo crate now... try to keep them indoors for temperature control when not in use, and i try to keep them discharged, also id have like if u explained the SIMPLE relationship between Watts, Amps, and Volts, and the basic math used to calculate them, took me 5 min to learn this in flim school, and its VERY useful info for ALL work involving batteries and electronics, also your video assumes we are using a High price, smart charger, i think by that point, your already aware of the things presented in this video, however i NEVER SEEN a smart charger, most people use what they need, dont use more than 3s, well buy a 3d 20 dollar battery charger, and so on, theres no resistance numbers however the chargers do have built in resistance controls, again this is useless to thosse starting in the hobby and not buying super expensive chargers

Awesome! I've heard mixed things about salt water, some positive, some negative, I'd still opt for a battery discharger personally as that way you know for a fact that the voltage has drained out before any corrosion can happen from the salt water.

this video is the reason i went for the avata instead of anything else xd im hoping to upgrade in the future for some gerpc with a o3 unit maybe? is there anything better?
@BrodieReed
@BrodieReed Жыл бұрын
haha, well at the end of the day, the Avata still runs off of LiPos, so the risks do still apply. Albeit the safety features included with DJIs smart batteries do take a lot of the numbers side out of it. Most larger FPV drones can have an O3 unit now, the BetaFPV Pavo series is a pretty good place to look I'd say if you've already got an Avata. Have a look at the Pavo35, I'm testing it out currently and am loving it: bit.ly/48gHOJ7
