@@sfielding10001 He’s talking about to deal with and avoid back pain. Regardless ….. ego lifting is using weight that you can’t maintain good form with for the sake of looking cool. Usually it someone who does it all the time, over load training on occasion with partial range of motion or slight cheating form is not ego lifting. I do this sometimes, but you will also see me doing strict form and full ROM 90% of the time. It does help you central nervous system to touch heavy weight tho and use progression training, but higher rep ranges have there benefits as well.

The real danger in deadlifts is if your hips are imbalanced and your lumbar spine is twisted under load. You can compensate for it a little more in a squat with vertical loading, but that horizontal shearing force is more problematic. Of course deadlifts can also be a great exercise, but you should have a good reason for doing them and be willing to invest a lot of time into technique. Everyone said perfect form but couldn’t understand. I wasn’t straining myself, it wasn’t a weight that was beyond what I can do. Everyone loves and advocates it until your injured. If your going for aesthetics and to specifically build a physique, it’s more ideal to focus on less risky workouts that target the muscle more specifically. I’ve never understood this “deadlifts are evil” mentality. WTF is more functional in the real world, than bending over to pick something off the ground. We do it all the freaking time in our day to day lives, including heavy stuff (especially if you grew up poor like me, doing manual farm work and other labor). If anyone fell a tree, cut it into longer logs, then had to pick one end up to get it in position to saw, we’d not give it a second thought. But soon as the weight is a barbell, suddenly “omg. Deadlifts are sooooo dangerous. Run for you lives!!!!”……. Does the same movement we do in our daily lives suddenly become the boogeyman, just because it takes the form of a barbell?

So much misinformation about deadlifting and so many people believing it. This guy is a bodybuilder who probably lifted 200kg on the regular, maybe that was indeed a to heavy load on his spine causing problems. But why not lower the weight. Do sets of 100kg instead for example, lifting is healthy, even for your spine, it even doesn’t matter if the spine is fully straight or even a little flexed. It is all about load management. I would suggest that you read scientific articles about lifting from scientific websites such as pubmed and stop getting your information from single persons which is not strong evidence and is often a opinion based on personal experience. We're definitely leaving the "why should you or should you not do deadlift" territory here, so I'm not saying deadlift is DIRECTLY advantageous for those situations. @the man himself 10-12 is my personal goal for any lift, I mostly lift for endurance and injury prevention as I have a physically taxing job as a millwright. Up to you what you wanna do but keeping in that range forces you to keep the weight manageable. I'm not trying to be a strongman or powerlifter, I don't care about putting up as many plates as possible. How do you think a deadlift should be handled?

I think everybody’s different when it comes to deadlifts. I personally don’t do them because of the same reasons Tom Platz just said. I think people are just built different. Some people can do them and some can’t no matter how good the form is or what the case may be.

I’ve taken deadlifts out a few months back, switched over to good mornings, my gains have been astronomically better, recovery better, squats have gone up, my back has no pain. The only deadlift variation I do now is RDL,l

Deadlifts bullet proofed my back and added the most mass out of any exercise, definitely gave me that tank look, just don’t be stupid and be safe.

I am terrified of back injuries. I heard that once you get a back injury it never really heals properly and it can easily become a chronic pain that never goes away.

Almost all injuries I've got are with deadlifts. I just avoid them now, at most i take some with the cage bar, seldom in stength/low rep
