Video Back Up. After removing a section that wasn't clear and had a typo, processing in youtube editor created an audio sync issue that ruined anything from about half way onward. To clarify, calories burned per minute is mets*3.5*kg/200 which totals the calories per minute. Substituting 2.5 as the met value results in the ~200 calories Jeremy reported (our best guess as to what he did) This is a minor point in the video, and it is entirely possible that Jeremy's calculation used the correct formula but subtracted the 1met equivalent (at rest) and is reporting 'additional' calories as was suggested by someone in the comments. Most people don't report calorie burn this way, but it is possible it is what he did to exaggerate the lack of benefit of walking. Again, I think we can all agree that this is a minor point of the video, and the main problem is the downplaying of cardio (a myth which we all know is Greg's mission to squash while promoting cardio for health as well as weight loss).

Seriously, without finding Coach Greg’s channel I wouldn’t have gone from 300lbs a year and a half ago to now 250lbs and I’ve been becoming a more healthy individual. I lifted weights all the time but my diet was garbage, fast food and regular soda for lunch everyday, and 0 cardio. I at first cut out all fast food and slowly started adding in bike riding like him. When I started I could only do like 30 minutes a few times a week. Now I average an hour 5 days a week and I also increase the difficulty on my gyms stationary bike. I haven’t felt so much better about my health than this.

Greg's got a lot of great info but I think one lesson that goes well beyond fitness for me is his emphasis on how finding your personal enjoyment in something is directly tied to your success. If you can find a way to like something that others avoid, you will enjoy showing up and get the results of doing that thing. Personally, I can consistently find a really nice flow state on the bike and a nice focus when lifting and I crave those mental states so showing up is never an issue (the same way showing up for Netflix is never a struggle), but I can't find the same when walking on an incline on the treadmill or running. I don't know why this is. But its made me a much better biker than someone who can't find a way to love the bike. I sorta think this explains a lot of success people find in various areas of life...

Also, aren't all sciences measured in metric? Every conversation table ever is going to use metric numbers. From chemistry to physics, it's all metric. So even a patriotic American like me knows organic history, which is where weight loss and fitness live, is supposed to use metric in your math. As a runner, all numbers are metric. No big deal, just do the conversions or get used to that unit of measurement for that activity

Greg, correct me if I’m wrong, but based on your calculations, using (3.5x3.5x77)/200 you’ve given us the total energy expenditure rate at 3.5 METs. But I believe Jeremy said additional calories. Therefore, using (2.5x3.5x200)/200 is actually an accurate representation of ADDITIONAL burned calories that otherwise you would have been burning by simply staying at rest.

To my understanding, the MET measurements include the BMR. For example, MET for sleeping is 0.95. I would assume by "burning calories" Jeremy meant additional calories. And that is why he substracted the 1 representing the BMR.

I've seen this sort of thing a few times, usual procedure is to say you only burn 200 calories an hour walking but say 350 calories doing weights in an hour. But to burn 200 calories you have to walk about 1.5 to 2 miles an hours. If that's all you can walk there's no way you can lift weights for an hour which is pretty advanced.
@davidpenwell34322 жыл бұрын
I think the hardest thing to get people to understand is that you have to increase activity level OUTSIDE of the gym. 30-60min half ass in the gym and then sitting in front of the TV the rest of the day isn't going to do it. If you aren't consistently losing weight you don't always have to adjust your gym routine. Your activity level through the day might be too low. If you end up not able to go to the gym then you're screwed if you have zero activity outside

Greg, the study was not a study that was meant to show what percentage of people stick with cardio. It was a study where volunteers were assigned cardio, and even though they were involved in a voluntary study, they still couldn't stick with it. The point is, if volunteers who were assigned to do cardio as a condition of a formal study still dropped out, what is the chance of people sticking with cardio totally on their own, when they haven't taken part in a study and don't have anyone assigning them anything? You're more likely to drop out if you are left to your own devices than you are when you volunteer for an assignment and someone else is counting on you to complete your assignment.

Of course in Jeremy's video things are twisted to sound extreme even if it is not true just to raise a problem what they can solve so you buy into it. In my honest opinion if you just give the truth and overwhelming value where people would want your help they still buy into it. So if you have two options why down on the route with full of lies and twisting of truth instead of being honest and generally wanted to help and provide value and help. At the end of the day, Greg is right, do the cardio what you like so you can sustain it, eat the food what you can sustain it in a deficit, maintenance or whatever you want to achieve and do the training you like and fits your goals and lifestyle.

I prefer slow steady cardio cuz it makes me less hungry but high intensity is more fun

Getting a job that requires me to be on my feet and walk 10-15k steps at work was the best thing I've done for my health. I struggle to eat enough calories to NOT lose weight. Currently trying to maintain 190 lbs at 3400 calories so I had to do away with the high volume recipes.

Learn to ruck and aim for a 15 minute per mile pace. 30 minutes x 5 days a week, or 1 hour x 3 days a week, minimum. This is what works for me. I'm 5'6'', 145 pounds, and I try to maintain 12-15% body fat year round. Rucking makes it possible. Sometimes I run a 5k or a 10k, but rucking is the ticket.
