Here is the fix. Gain access to evaporator drain as he has shown above. Here is what I did different. Once the metal clip is removed, remove all excess plastic and make the drain tube smooth. I used a razor blade and 120/220 sand paper to rough-up the surface. Clean the evap drain tube and black firewall gasket with isopropyl alcohol. I then applied black Dowsil 739 plastic adhesive/sealant to the area that I just smoothed out on the drain tube. Slide the SMALL side of the 90 elbow until it stops on the tube/gasket. To finish it off, I apply the same sealant all around the mating elbow and gasket. Works perfectly, no leaks. This is on a 2019 F250 Lariat.

I just literally had this happen and have a thread about it on ford-truck. The only thing I would add is if you notice on the pipe nipple there are a couple of shark fins, not sure why, but if your dont push the elbow on past those it will make it worse because the water will drip past the elbow that is raised by them. I’m debating wether to Dremel them off.

I have been car fixing since my first summer job at 14 in 1972. A/C drain leaks, not plugged up, have been around periodically since then. I think the old guys that learned from the mistakes and fixed them retire and the new engineers have to screw it up and learn again. Open cell foam gaskets get changed to molded closed cell foam. Drains that get suction on high fan get extension tubes with a restrictor to give the water weight to overcome the suction. Drains that engine fans or speed forced air blows water back into the drain get elbows (DING DING DING, we have a winner!). Evaporators that let water fly off and get outside the drain field get a thin foam sheet clipped to them, etc., etc. Then a new car gets designed and they decide those < $1 fixes can be done away with to save money and the water runs free once again.

My 2015 F-350 dripped a little the other day. I have weather mats so no harm. Definitely going to modify mine. After removing the wheel well liner, I noticed my drain tube looks like it has a slight upward pitch. Should be pitching down ever so slightly. I will cut the plastic fins off on the end of the tube, and use a light coat of RTV silicone around the tube before I install the 90 fitting. That should help mitigate inner coupling water migration. Ford and their fuck it…just duck it…tape idea, unbelievable.
@Papapantydropa2 жыл бұрын
Mine has an upward pitch too and was wondering if it was supposed to be like that
@HK-212 жыл бұрын
@@Papapantydropa You wouldn’t think so, however after the modification everything flows properly. I ended up using a razor blade to cut the plastic fins off, on the outside of the drain tube. I also used a light coat of clear RTV silicone on the outside diameter of the drain tube. That ford 90 coupler fits really tight, I ended up using a heat gun to assist with installing the fitting after applying the light coat of RTV on the outside of the drain tube. Remember to go light, you just want to seal the inside of that coupling to the outside of the drain tube. Too much, and you will essentially create a damn or barrier internally, which will prevent proper flow.
@HK-212 жыл бұрын
@@Papapantydropa What’s happening with that shituation is the drain water is following the drain tube along the bottom, and re-entering the cab through the not so water tight seal at the firewall. Once you install that 90 you’ll be golden.
@Papapantydropa2 жыл бұрын
@@HK-21 I appreciate the info man. It's been a nightmare for me cause originally I thought my issue was a windshield leak but it's not. I been dealing with my trucks flashers coming on randomly when it's parked and off. They flash so much I would get in my truck the next day and it would be dead. Come to find out the water was getting my BCM wet which is causing it to spaz out like that. 2019 F150 with 24k miles
@HK-212 жыл бұрын
@@Papapantydropa At least you’ve identified the problem, sometimes that’s the hardest part. I had a 2001 F-350 that had an issue with water migrating through voids in the front windshield due to age, and deterioration of the pinch weld where the sealant was applied to create a water tight seal. The water would drip down the drivers side A pillar right on top of the GEM module, and power distribution box, creating a similar shituation. I would turn the truck off, and sometime later it would power up accessories without the key in the ignition causing a low battery no start condition. I found a replacement, and wrapped plastic over the top to protect it. With the age of the truck and the condition of that pinch weld, I could not find a glass company that would guarantee a water tight seal. I know it’s a pain but you can always disconnect the negative battery terminal once parked until you get the issue resolved, either way that hoods getting popped, I found it way more convenient to disconnect a terminal vs jumping the truck. Best of luck to you, and at the end of the day you got a story to tell. Who knows, you might be able to help someone else out who’s experiencing the same issue.

Great video! What a TERRIBLE engineering job by Ford. I've never seen such an obvious flaw in the design of the drain tube outlet. My 2020 F-150 just literally ruined my right floorboard insulation and made a mess of the interior. Luckily my wife was on the passenger side and the floormat was a little sideways. When she exited she felt the water coming up through the carpet. Ford has known about this design defect for a long time and if you are out of warranty, it's your dime. That was silly, absurd even. The tape is now doing virtually nothing. The tape needs to be behind the insulation, on the metal. You should have cut the tape to go around the drain nipple. And did you say you couldn't;t get it around the elbow? Do you mean the new elbow? Why not just take the elbow back off, apply the tape, then put the elbow back on? You could even just lay the tape on over the hole without the nipple on and cut around the drain tube (carefully!) with a utility knife, nice and clean, and then force it back with the nipple upon reinstallation.
