To paraphrase something I heard once - In your twenties you worried about what everyone thought. In your thirties you didn't care what anyone thought. By your forties, you realized nobody ever thought about you.

Yes stop the endless introspection - and get a perspective. Remember to love your quirks. Go home from every party as soon as you realize that if you score a lady it is to late in the evening to perform. Accept the limits of human beings and accept the concept of God. You havent reached all you economic goals but remember you are living in the most Golden age the history has seen until now. Read books. Get a younger person to be your mentor in your line of business.

Great video John. Yes, the phrase “Loose yourself in the service of others” continues to be a guiding light for me when I’m feeling down or not optimal. When my down-stroke fades, and it does, I have a decent feeling of accomplishment personally and usually gratitude from those that I helped. This method, is far from perfect, but It sure beats a self-pity party, every time.

STOP BEING CLOSED MINDED. I find that traveling to other countries really helps me get a perspective on how other people think and believe and I always try to get inside their head to see why they do things. In doing so, my perspective is really opened up.

Something that’s stuck with me is to never stop learning or making/accepting changes. Science shows that doing new things creates new neuron connections in brain and does make a difference on memory and fighting dementia or related problems. Taking different path to store or to home is simple example. Or read up on basics of something you - it gives awareness, sometimes talking points with new acquaintances or friends, and keeps your mind active. Legend.

A to the effing men! Good reminders to keep moving forward, John. Today is my 58th birthday and thankfully I learned to do what you mentioned here at 39! I've developed a comfortable lifestyle, had successes and goals achieved, learned how to let go and move on. I have been the giver of and recipient of kindness. Today, a young woman acquaintance of mine made me some cake for my birthday and brought it to me at the bistro we see each other at. Always good to be reminded of how to keep living well as we age. And yes, good sir, you are having a meaningful impact because you speak truth to power and no bullshit. Keep up the good work and let's all pay it forward. Appreciate you, John!

Great video which puts a lot into perspective. As someone who is well past the 40 mark, I sometimes find myself looking back to when I was younger and thinking "if only I knew then what I know now". Life is the best teacher, and with age comes wisdom and experience. I find myself living a more routinely structured "boring" life than I used to when I was younger. Go to work, go grocery shopping, go to the gym. Rinse and repeat. And that's perfectly ok. My priorities in life have changed. The minor insignificant details that once bothered me no longer do; it really is important to just let go. What's interesting is that this "not caring anymore" can, ironically, be a double-edged sword of sorts. The less we care, the more likely we are to turn down those opportunities which come along because we feel that it's "been there done that". Missed opportunities in life, whether they be meeting new people or learning new things, become increasingly important precisely because the clock is ticking and we are not getting any younger. The worst thing is to regretfully think "I should have when I had the chance."

Two things regarding Point One. First, my uncle turned 58 and was morose about it. My aunt said to him: "But you're only middle-aged.' He replied: "You think? How many 116-year-olds do you know?" Second, when I was in high school, the most profound thing any teacher said to me was: "Remember, if you are very lucky, you get only 30,000 days on this planet. That's all. Make sure every one of them counts."

To tell you the truth I hated the club scene in my 20's the music was always loud and overly crowded and you can't talk without shouting. Bridges Scoreboard in Griffith, In. has a separate bar that was less crowded and a lot quieter it was such a cool place, to get away from the club room. The money spent and the morning hangovers it wasn't worth it when waking up every morning even without the hangovers. So on Dec 31st in 1996 was my last drink ever at the Rum Keg in Winter Haven, FL. I'm like I had enough and went cold turkey. When I was a cab driver I hated dealing with stupid drunks. We have Billiards room that I used to go to before the fire to eat late dinners when every restaurant was closed that was the extent of my hanging out with the younger crowd. Just eating and having my Cola's and leaving after watching a game or something. Even at the Ave Bar on a Friday night or Saturday night having dinner and then just relaxing by myself sitting in one of the lounge chairs and reading.

As people age they can empathize more with others. This means very much “giving a crap”, talking less, and listening more. It isn’t all about you. Older people can increase the amount of their giving to others, whether as time or money or volunteering your skills. Anger and resentment is never the answer.

Here’s the way I look at it… I’m 63 years old right now. I recently had a couple health issues and I’m not sure if those are gonna present a problem for me in retirement or not. However, if I go back 15 years when I was 48, it seems like just yesterday! 15 years and bam 💥 I’m 63. So in my eyes, 15 years forward is going to be even faster and I will be 78, if… I’m still alive. Am I gonna have Good health? Am I going to be physically independent and capable of doing things that One would want to do during retirement? Probably not, and I will definitely be slowing down and might not have the energy…so, someday is now! I gotta get busy living! A new girlfriend is helpful.
