I really needed to hear this message, thank you! A parent asked for money and I finally put my foot down and said no because they are part of the reason I'm in debt. Been feeling guilty ever since though because African culture teaches you to give your parents everything because they raised you. You also wanna see them happy. That emotional manipulation is real :(

It’s always a tough position to be in. Family members often prey upon someone with a good heart and completely manipulate the situation. They will often treat the money you earn as partially “their” money. “You should give me some of your money. You had advantages that I didn’t. You have more than you need and you know I’m struggling!” As the speaker states, you don’t owe anything to your parents/family members. If they made poor choices, those are not for you to compensate them for. People with no incentive to get out of a poor financial situation won’t change.

Here’s why you should stop sending money: 1. It makes them lazy. 2. It encourages them to keep asking for more. 3. Their problems will never be solved. 4. They never invest it to make more. 5. They can never help you when you need any help. 6. Most of them are ungrateful, once they get the money they disappear until they need more money again. 7. Just save your money and enjoy life. Stop spending life in your 20’s and 30’s trying to solve other peoples problems.

Don't be biased.... Anyone from a settled home cherished both parent not one against other... If you are listening to advice it's fine, but turn it round again to your self... What I can see here is just an advice coming from an average financial stabled man (the adviser) to average financial stabled people (the advisee).. No wealthy people can reply to this. How much would you give parent that would run you down when you are RICH? Lol.. Change your mentality...
@Blacklogic5 жыл бұрын
Kola you have my perspective totally wrong unless I'm interpreting your message wrong. I believe most people are not average and we have our own unique ways of handling and thinking of things. It's like saying your comment is coming from an average troll who made a comment to a message to people who's family and friends use them, guilt, them into giving them money and the message is aimed to those individuals who give money freely to those who know who use them. Not those who actually need it and will do good by it. A troll who rather looks at a message in a negative connotation than for an informational perspective to help others that may be getting used to stop being used. I'm not saying you are a troll. I just wished people would watch and listen to all the words of the video rather than pick and choose what parts bother them and or parts they disagree with. Knowing the full story in my opinion is better than just a piece.

It's basic bro. You can give people money and they can do whatever they want. Receiving money you didn't work for is easy. They key regardless of your financial status in helping someone in my opinion it's best to teach them how to be good Stewarts of thier money and teach how to save and invest while you're helping them. If you want your money back put contingencies and commitment on your money to them. Yes feed them but teach them how to hunt so they feed themselves.

My family road my gravy train for 1 year and caused me to get into 50,000 worth of debt. It is easy to fall into this trap, especially when they have so many needs and you have the resources. Unfortunately brother this is how it is when people from different areas of the US or even around the globe from the Caribbean from Africa start to make any sort of money their family members saw it to be leeches into their finances because you're doing better because you had different avenues of how to get some money that they did not take and now you are the breadwinner not only for your immediate family but also for your extended family and now you are there piggy bank you are there ATM and they depend on you and when you no longer can provide cuz you're in a different situation a different financial place you become nothing to them and you learn very quickly how much they care and love for you that it's really not love or care is as simply that you have the mean to provide whatever they want we need to start thinking about the people in our lives and the roles that they play what are their interests the most likely what can I get out of you and when it stops other than to support you or there was just using you.

Damn!!! $50k in debt? I know the feeling. I recently came out of $30k of credit card debt late last year. My family rode my gravy train for a while as well. My sister made a lot of poor choices and always came to me for relief. My mom is horrible with cash as well. The issue with my mom is that whenever I give her something like $700, she Will become mother Teresa and give it away to other people because “god told her to”. I felt that was a slap in the face because it’s like I’m helping other people whenever she does that. I stop helping her out for over a year until 2 months ago I told her this “hey let’s buy you a car”. It sounds crazy but this was what I told her. “My generosity ends here. If you take this car, you will assume all responsibilities that comes with it AND you will never ask me for a dime ever again. I don’t want to hear about your $100 problems again. If you break the car then that’s your problem “. The amount of times I enabled her was WAY beyond a measly $2000 used car. Looking back I probably should have done it a lot sooner. Now she’s free to go out and work more. She did called me up and complained about only having $100 saved up. And I said “you have a working car. Why haven’t you been going to work?”. She responded “because I don’t want to work much because I’m scared of the COVID-19. So I said “well that’s not my problem”

YEAH, YOU'RE RIGHT ON THE MONEY ON THIS ONE!!!! The following is the psychological breakdown of how family members including friends end up becoming your personal money sucking vampires. First Phase: when you help them out in the beginning they are grateful for your help. Second Phase: after you initially helped them out from the bottom of your heart, then they begin to drop you a little hints. Third Phase: once you start giving into their little hints, now they enter into the phase of not having fear to ask you directly. Fourth Phase: once they get comfortable asking you directly for small amounts of money, now they become bold asking for larger sums. Fifth Phase: once they break you into giving them large sums of money, now they don't ask .... they begin to demand that you MUST GIVE THEM MONEY!!!! SIXTH PHASE ( the most dangerous phase of them all ) they will threatened to hurt you or they will hurt you physically and mentally until they get what they want from you. Before you know it now you got to get the police involved or move away and disappear from them.

One issue I’m concerned with is one of my family members can’t afford some basic necessities. I have supported this person in helping with groceries, bills, traveling (daily places like doc. Appts.ect) This person and I have had long conversation on options to make more money for them to afford things; but she doesn’t keep her word, won’t even TRY. Her participation in the family is needed and for years her not getting something simple as a drivers license has hindered unity. She wants to borrow car but won’t get a license. Then when the owner of the car is in fear of legal issues she still gets an attitude when the answer is no. Then there is the guilt trip issue. For instance if we are together and we go to a fast food place this person never has the money, then it’s sad to see someone not eat so then I’ll say “well I get it, don’t want you to be hungry” so I help. It’s a lifetime cycle of being a supportive family. I feel abused and I don’t want to be selfish but everything I have is because I went out and worked for it. If someone didn’t work at least I can say I tried. It’s so sad to see this person won’t even TRY. do I just let them starve 🙁😕😣😔
@Blacklogic6 жыл бұрын
How would they learn if you always feed them. Starve is a stretch. They will be hungry. In order to learn new things it requires time and maybe that's what they need. So help them by not helping

Yeah, so true. Now that I have been stepping back she’s giving me the cold shoulder. I’m definitely not trying to be a jerk or treat her with disrespect. Our relationship is weird.It’s only since I’ve realized all these years how one sided things are especially in my times of extreme need. There’s no concern like how I know caring family and friendships to be. It’s extra sad cause she’s my mother 😣. I’ve been the mother this whole time to her and her sons. I’ve Just been the one who figures things out. Now my own family has to take priority no matter who I may loose along the way. #confused #hurt. Thanks for your reply.

No problem, it's difficult emotionally at times but you have to take care of yourself financially first before you can help others or you will never reach financial freedom. You're not working all your life for others but only to around 60 or maybe before but not until you're died.
@necabibi35585 жыл бұрын
Buying someone a meal at a fast food restaurant really isn't that big of a deal even if it's often. Especially if it's your mum. Unless you really can't afford it. But the car issue and not paying for her responsibilities is a joke. Just say no.

This video is for me! My daughter is the same as your son, but when I had a car accident she stopped going to the mall and movies with her friends. She refused to move into the dorms in college because she felt that she had to take care of me. However, when I scheduled my surgery I bought Obamacare so I could be transferred to a rehabilitation center after my surgery because I refused to interfere with her college experience. That is when she moved into the dorms, and she had a great college experience. She graduated and was working less than a week after her graduation and has her own apartment. As for the rest of my family, you are so right. They only call me when they want something. I have been working since I was 15 years old and spending my money on my siblings, but were they here for me? Nope! Never, ever!

I try to understand cultural ways of people in other countries especially Africa but regardless I know it's a difficult decision. However if you truly want to become financially free, or have goals and things you want to do that require income, and your finances you may or will cut people off. It's not your job to be people personal ATM. So you give them the courtesy that you can no longer finance them because you are financial conservative, or extremely frugal and simply don't have it . Or the amount of money you have, have decrease. This is not a lie; simply a different train of thought. You pay yourself, you pay your bills, you put some in saving and investing and maybe a travel fund and you simply have nothing less. Now that portion is for you but nonetheless it's the truth. Your business is your business and you don't have to tell anyone especially when it's YOUR money. So I encourage you urge you to live your best life and not the guilt take over and be broke and or paying people back home for the rest of your life. Think paying people money that's not giving you anything in return only because of guilt. Mmmmm😣

Its an African problem not a Nigerian problem only, it's the same here in South Africa. You have to decide whether you will give in to the pressure or not. I told my mother that I am not her retirement plan, she is currently employed and I told her that she must makes sure she invests for her retirement because I will not be responsible for her bad financial decisions later on. NEVER give hand-outs to people who are mentally and physically capable of making their own money, rather help them to start a business, let them sell something for a profit. Lol I’m working MY ass off to change my life. The only person I have a true soft spot for is my mom for all she’s done for me. But for the most part, the only thing I will share with my family is the tools and resources to create their own wealth. In Africa you are basically guilt-tripped into giving family money. It all boils down to financial illiteracy. Parents are NOT owed by children!!!! You give birth to children because you love them and want them to thrive not because you want to be a leech! I told my mother that I am not her retirement plan, she is currently employed and I told her that she better make sure she is saving for her retirement because I will not fund her bad decisions later in life. The best way to help our families is to teach them to fish, not to catch the fish for them. Help them start a business, give them starter cash to sell something for at a profit. NEVER dish hand-outs to anyone who is physically and mentally capable of making their own money

Sadly I am in that position with "Fam" and no matter how many times I try to explain that I have my own responsabilities, they don't "listen" at all. No matter what your issues are, their issues are more important. He's never learned to budget for himself, and he was never taught, he even faced eviction when he didn't pay and the bailiff was threatening to throw his stuff into the street. This is so brilliant. I've seen African Born Folks who send money to family and they realize that it's not a good thing to do.
