I’ve had to stop streaming because my son’s school switched to virtual learning because of covid so he is home every day now. I love getting to spend the extra time with him but I cannot stream while he is home. He has adhd and requires an enormous amount of attention so it just doesn’t work. It’s really been stressing me out cause I feel like a huge disappointment. Anyway I needed to hear this, I needed to hear that it’s ok to step away and I thank you for that.

This is really good information you're providing here, when start your streaming career it's very easy to get burned out, because first there's a lot of prep to do, specially with figuring out how obs works, and I totally agree, when you're just starting out 3 to 4 streams a week with around 3 to 4 hours each is a great start, it makes room for a smooth growth. I have seen multiples of stream advice and i take hours and hours of notes and not to mention been streaming for four years. Here is my thoughts about your 3 advices. 1) i had this problem that i've crunch add ons, plugins, and too many other things because i keep thinking more will get me more things but after many advices, people prefer the idea of "less is more" Having goals is good. speaking of goals, everyone has their own individual goals. Its always a where a person says your situation is either do it as a hobby or do it as a job. A person can do both or do one without the other. The point is, no one should tell people what their goal should be even in a disagreement. This leads to number 2 2) The way you describe good and bad sounds like a personal view. If you don't need views you have a good attitude but the person who cares about views a bad attitude?? There is a difference between an certain attitude and a person who cares about views. yes, people can be stingy wanting a person to look at their stream but there are people who really care about numbers and not give a single bad impression. Some people don't need views but here are the reason why people need them. Some people really care about making twitch as their full-time job or part-time job. thats why people like me care about views so much. twitch doesn't pay you at 0 viewers and future sponsorship don't care if they don't see any value. The reality is, theres very limited people who are willing to watch other streamers. the reason? i ask and they said they busy with work (even non twitch related), don't have time because IRL situations, they are working on their brand, or even prefer to stay one streamer. People try to get as much viewers as possible. 3) this advice is somewhat great but here is the thing. you stated that your viewer will understand that you need to take a break. While i look at my average viewer which is 0, i think the idea of taking a break is close to none. Theres no one to care so why should i take a break? As a workaholic, taking a break is much like an insult or an uncomfortable feeling of not doing anything and not gain anything. I rather work myself to death than to know the idea other people will be gaining potential viewers when I'm in bed not doing anything when I could of doing some work instead. Making on twitch is my dream and my life. to me, it best for me to die trying than to do nothing. That is everything i had to say. There are some info i did miss but i decided to not talk about those is because i either agree to the statement or neutral about the idea. This is not a huge disagreement post, its just a post about my POV of the advices you said and how I experience it. Its not easy to be a small streamer but any advice people said, you have to take it or leave it,. if you decided to take it, then see if it works for you or not.

I couldn't praise this enough. I started February 2020 and did it daily for hours, even multiple times a day, losing sleep. Ruining personal relationships and hurting my relationship with my wife, I got so burnt out that in summer of 2022 I just stopped all together. I had no will or want to stream anymore. I've now set aside 3 days a week 3-5 hours and it's put a new healthy attitude towards streaming. If it feels like too much, then it's definitely too much

These videos have been super helpful, thank you for sharing these tips! I do have a bit of a suggestion, as it's something I don't really see mentioned very often in these sorts of videos but you touched on it for a moment here! You talked about sometimes having a negative attitude towards someone in your chat, and knowing when to say something vs just ignoring & banning them. Are there any other tips/advice for small streamers to help manage/maintain a good relationship with their chat? I know everyone is gonna be a little different because of their personal comfort level, but is there any advice for finding the sweet spot between having a good foundation of rules and just over-policing / being way too strict? I imagine at some point, becoming more and more strict with chat is going to start hurting your growth, so I think it would be nice to hear advice or tips for maintaining a good relationship between streamer + chat, and maybe what kind of attitude or headspace we should be in when we engage with chat to avoid stress & negative experiences!

I need to work on being more appreciative because I have my pet peeves.. When someone comes to stream just to say “hey I just wanted to stop by and say hi real quick ok gtg” I do not reward them with any attention because to me that’s not a quality engagement and you’re not watching my show so you might as well have not shown up. It’s like “hi this isn’t worth my time bye” but my other streamer friend said she’s loves that when people stop by. So maybe I should be more positive about those? It just sucks because everyone leaves the stream after like 30 minutes to an hour. My other pet peeve is people that don’t reply when I ask questions about them or even topics they have brought up when all they do is drop one-word or two-word messages like I KNOW they are not actually watching the stream. They’re leaving their phone running, not paying attention to what’s going on, and looking at their phone every now and again and seeing something like I’m running at that moment and then messages “oh hes running” and that’s it. So then I’ll be like oh hey what’s up man how was stream earlier? Then there’s silence. So I guess I should be grateful for these people even though I’m thinking they shouldn’t be here if they aren’t watching and engaging but maybe viewers are viewers for now and they help build and get me to the point where people are paying more attention idk. Just makes me think like what am I doing wrong

@theonecalledmiku93073 жыл бұрын
This is gonna be quite long, but I advise you to read to the end if you start it First topic: Don’t squeeze your community, keep the goals visible for you if it’s something driving you forward, otherwise I’d recommend not looking at them all the time (if you like to make statistics, that’s nice to have tho). I noticed myself to make fun of how little ad revenue you get, but how ridiculous Twitch’s suggestions for ads are. 3 minutes of ads per hour may not seem much, but it’ll piss off many, many people, rightfully so. I don’t want to do a break every 30 minutes, so why would I follow those suggestions (that a few take too much as guidelines on how to handle ads). Away from the ad thing, with many, many goals blatantly screaming in your viewer’s face, you seem like you’d make them responsible to make your channel grow. You have 2/10 subs and tell everyone all the time about how little that has gone so far? Don’t make viewers feel guilty for not subscribing or gifting subs. The same goes for literally anything else. Make a few emotes, bit emotes, have nice badges, let them know that these emotes/badges are available, let them know that you invest yourself into the community, even if they’re just watching, even if they don’t financially support you. You should be greatful for every single minute someone spends in your stream, active or not. People CHOOSE to spend time in your stream, if you’re not gonna give them anything back but just pull more out of them, I don’t know who would want to spend time there. Anyway, enough of that rant, let’s come to shoe no. 2, I mean, the second point of the video. This point kind of starts out as the first one, people choose to spend time in your stream, be greatful. The people you have to not be greatful for are trolls that come in every now and then, don’t bother with them, ban them and if you need/want to say something about that, please do. Mind your language, keep it respectful, there’s no place for hate, even if it’s just to hit back. To wrap this point up, simply don’t be a dick, don’t troll around and be respectful of others as well as their limitations Point Tree or something: I’d like to start with an example from myself, I often can’t sleep properly or at all during the night, does that mean I cancel those streams? Not neccesarily. Streaming has sometimes helped me get through the sleeplessness and it just felt good to have great people to have a nice conversation with. Does that mean you should stream when you feel down? By no means, it’s very subjective and any individual can experience it differently, in my case it sometimes works out, but a lot of these days it’s still gonna be no stream, just because I can’t put up the energy for it. If you’re unsure wether you could do it, sing a song you like, but that isn’t in your favorites, judge your performance and then think again wether it’d be a good idea to stream today. Take into account how energetic you sang, how focused, how easy/hard it was. A few words at the end of this half-essay comment, by no means do you have to be one of those super active, talented artists and make all the stuff for everyone, but if you expect your community to give you things, you have to be ready to give first. That was my view on the different points, Dan, as usual, great informative video and thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

One question I always have is this. Is it better to start streaming for more hours per stream or more days per week? I only get 2 days off from work a week but when I go live, I stream for 10-15 hours. I kinda wonder what would happen if I limited it down to 3 hours every day before work only, if that might do some good for my audience to grow
@xTwoShoes3 жыл бұрын
I would say that 10-15 hours is too long. If you cut that time waaaaay down, you have so much more free time to create content for other platforms:) For example, I only stream 3-4 days a week for max 4 hours at a time. And spend my spair time making these vids:)

I will say that I would LIKE to have views, because in one of my primary games I stream, there's a mod that incorporates Chat points into the game in real time, allowing your viewers to interact with you directly in the game. But chat points are locked behind Affiliate...which is locked behind 50 follows, and avg 3 viewers.... And I've been trying to grow my channel for 7 months now and I have yet to unlock the ability to use this fun mod. So, hence my frustration in the background :D

hello! Im a new streamer and I stream 8 hours in total. 4 in the morning and another 4 at night. Its very exhausting to talk that long. Chat even sees that I talk less and less at the 3 hours mark lol.
@xTwoShoes3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you are doing waaaaaay too much. In my opinion a new streamer should not stream 8 hours a day. Have you tried perhaps cutting down your stream time and maybe using that spare time to create some video content from your stream?:)

does twitch have bots for small streamers?, there's always some people who come to my testing streams, and I get nervous xD
@xTwoShoes3 жыл бұрын
Most likely bots or random passers by:) Theres a list of most common twitch bots on google. Just check the names against them:)

Great information my friend ,, I stream on twitch but I do it for a hobby and I always appreciate every follow so if I get a follow it means more to me than a donation the bottom line I love gaming and once in a blue moon I will get a follow and that's fine as I work 50 hours a week ,, keep up with the helpful videos
