I live in Florida, near the beach. I had this house built on a lot that was graded and they put all the grass down. The grass, however, came from someone's pasture, and it smelled like cow dung and was full of weeds. Before long, the yard "grass" started to thin out, and pretty soon I had mostly sandy, bare areas. I read an article about how to encourage grass growth, and it recommended fewer cuttings and keeping it at about 3". I have now, for a long time, let the back yard go to seed at least once a year, which means both grass and weeds. An invasive plant came in and took over, and I let it go because I didn't know it would become a problem. It's very pretty with little purple and white flowers, but it's a vine type, and it's a pain. Nonetheless, it has shaded the yard, and I keep it mostly under control. I have a natural looking yard now, and it's very nice. My yard now is very lush, and is able to keep more moisture in it. Shading the soil is so important. The sun is merciless now, and all plants need a break. Keeping the grass too short doesn't allow for rejuvenation of anything. I would like to see a comparison of a couple of rows of food plants with weeds left in, compared to the same crops with the weeds pulled out during their grow time. Are crops that affected by weeds to where they have to be pulled?
