I think a good way for people paranoid about the fart cloud that comes out from turning back on your filter, specifically canisters, put a filter sock or very fine bag that is fish safe over that output, that way youre "catching" the debris. It's best you hold onto it and not put alot of filter floss inside the sock, if you did, as the water flow will be a sudden burst which could be a very messy cleanup, and may break your output if you tied it onto the outtake pipe. (The water pressure will need to push through the mesh which cause resistance, basic physics but that resitance needs support to even out the pressure, so the pipe is the victim in this case.)
@theblindfishkeeperАй бұрын
I used to do large water changes on my tanks as well, but I have now switched over to only doing water changes that come down to my filter intakes. I never turn my filters off any longer. I also only clean the filters on days that I am not doing water changes. I like your method, it used to be mine. But nowadays, I do about 30% twice a week.🐠🦯

Let me start with I love Kev and his great tutorials, it helps the community a lot. My concern is how much is too much water for ones ‘hobby’. Keeping huge tanks are great, but doing that much water change too frequently due to choice of fish feels excessive to me. Water is a finite resource they say so I dunno what side I’m on this one.

That old water feeds my backyard. It’s the circle of life. 😁 Plus, it’s not being wasted if it’s “feeding” the fish minerals. Every living thing uses resources. Whether we’re keeping them as pets or when they’re living free in the wild. 😁

Kev, another great video. Had to keep going back a couple of times as Gordo kept swimmimg by and distracts me as usual. I have to say, i keep my eyes out for a blood parrot but have yet to come across one like him. However, i did always turn off my filters even though i only do 50% water changes weekly. But, i will now leave them on! I like the idea of the ‘rainfall’ but also keeping the tank oxygenated. @shemeckajohnson - the dose after the tank has been refilled will be the stability going in not the prime. Sequence of dosing is 1) drain tank, 2) dose tank with prime to the volume of your tank water volume (if you are dosing tank rather than the volume of replacement water), 3) refill tank with fresh water. 4) add your stability. Hope that helps. 😀
@KaveManAquaticsАй бұрын
Yea if 50% doesnt go below your intakes, then just leave them on. You'll get tons of good water movement freeing up any trapped detritus, tons of oxygenation, and the "rainfall" is beautiful to watch lo

I use large pre filter sponges on my fx6 intakes. Keeps large debris getting into filter. Never have trapped filter debris back into the tank and i shut them off during 80% water changes. Filters and filter hoses get cleaning every 4 months (roughly when fliw decreases). If debris shoots out the filter when starting back up, then its time for cleaning.

Depends on how long you're going to leave the valve closed. If you're doing a quick 10-20 minute water change you dont even have to unplug it. And yes you can close only 1 valve, no need to close both if you're not going to unplug.

Hang on backs can't stay plugged in below the water line indicated on the filter. You might be able to do it with a canister if it doesn't have a minimum water level. My HoB filter I would only be able to lower 1-2 gallons of water before it wouldn't pump water anymore.
@KaveManAquaticsАй бұрын
First, not all hang on backs are the same. Second, I mentioned that if your water drops below your intake you should turn it off 😁
@scroobydoobie2432Ай бұрын
@KaveManAquatics yes I'm aware of that but also the min level is normally above the intake on a majority of you HoB filters so majority of them u cannot leave them running because it will no longer pump the water. Now I can leave my air pump running but I never do this because they are all connected to the same outlet so I just turn them off. I've never had an issue with the fish in doing so either. 1 advise is to stop the filter when filling up with tap water with Chlorine. The anti-chlorine will not be able be 100% effective to treat the entire tanks because it has not yet reach all corners of the tank yet. Once the entire tank is filled up, if you have wave makers, turn them on first to let the entire mix well (or you can use your hand to give a good stir)l so that the anti chlorine can do its job first before switching back on the power of the filters. This is to ensure the bacteria colony stays unharmed in the process of introducing tap water in the tank.
@KaveManAquaticsАй бұрын
Not necessary. Chlorine doesn’t impact bacteria instantly. While water conditioner does instantly neutralize chlorine and chloramine. I add Prime directly in the tank while filling every water change for 10 years. Try it 😁

Watch kevs videos and your fish will thrive
@AKJBubblesАй бұрын
I can echo what has been said below, use kevs videos, you can not fail if you do. I have gone from a total newbie, to now raising fry because my fish are so happy and healthy. As for your ph, this one is fickle especially when starting out with a new / young tank. When your cycling process is kicked off, you may find your ph buffer is very low right from the start (depending on where you live). The acidity increase as the cycle progresses will eat into any ph buffer you have. If your ph drops below 7.0, your beneficial bacteria (aOB) will stall in reproduction. The best way to overcome this is to find out what your gh and kh is right out of the tap. Then, pop a bag of crushed coral into your filter as chemical media. This will stabilise your ph whilst you cycle your tank and give your beneficial bacteria the stable parameters to reach its full potentional and levels to accommodate the bioload in your aquarium. Once your tank is fully cycled, introduce fish (and any wood for that matter) slowly, to ensure your bacteria increases with the new load appropriately and still keeping a watchful eye on your ph. But your crushed coral will keep things stable for you. I use crushed coral in a bag inside my fluval filters as it flushes through the system faster. You can also use larger chunks ( placed in a soft bag) and popped directly into your tank. The reason i mention soft bag is that coral can be rough and jagged which could potentially harm some nosy fish which most are. I hope this helps.

@@MrMugsyrny were you using ph buffers and trying to change the ph balance of the water coming from your faucets? Because that can cause even more stress to fish than just leaving the ph level alone. I’ve had bettas, community tanks and now cichlids with no issues about ph

I never turn my filters off
@genea118Ай бұрын
I have to HOB on my 75 gallon. Unfortunately, they both have water-lines and when doing a water change, the water would go way lower than their lines. Thus, I have to turn them off before I even start.
@KaveManAquaticsАй бұрын
Yes with HOB's thats always going to happen. With some HOB's you also have to add water into it to get it to start running again. If you have that type, I highly suggest you check out the Seachem Tidal and you'll never have to do that again 😁 - kaveman-aquatics.myshopify.com/products/seachem-tidal-55-hob-filter

I use Seachem Clarity after all my water changes to immediately clear up any detritus when I start up my filters again.

Another great option, especially if you are doing a big water change!

at the moment i have a 55 gallon tank where i have goldfish and angels and other fish on one side and on the other side with a divideri have 2 oscar babys and a blood parrot but my water is never clear what should i do and would i need to separate from tanks ?
@KaveManAquaticsАй бұрын
Yes you will need to separate them eventually. 1 adult oscar needs about 75 gallons alone. Your water could be cloudy for many reasons. My book on getting crystal clear water can definitely help! 😁 It's short, to the point, and covers all the causes and solutions for cloudy water. Grab the eBook for free or purchase the Paperback. I promise you won't be disappointed! Check it out here - bit.ly/clearH2O

I really had to think about doing it to my own tank, but I had to get the shot. I hope my fish forgive me 🤣🤣

Awesome video Kev! (just a little note), when you are filling up the water, remember to put prime and stability, before you put the water. It has happened!🤣

Why the hell does Father Fish preach, No water changes! ??
@KaveManAquaticsАй бұрын
Cause he sells Plants 🤣
@icarlsw34Ай бұрын
Because his method is lots and lots of plants with few fish and not feeding much. So he can get away without them water changes. Whenever fr fish says something it's in the context of his methods.
@ygamermobile2701Ай бұрын
@@KaveManAquatics I mean it depends on which fish you plan on keeping for example the more micro fish like guppies and even cherry shrimp prefer the no water change side (and they tolerate plants unlike cichlids) but on the other side goldfish and cichlids do poop ALOT and don't tolerate plants so yeah it depends on the fish and love your videos btw!
