I trained both my standard poodles, starting at their age of 6 months, with a prong collar (here in Canada). I used them for only approximately 1 year for each, until they were trained. Both were extremely well behaved, happy, sociable, and well adjusted for all of their 14.5 years of life (they were subsequent to each other, not at the same time). They loved when I put the collar on because it meant training and fun. Both were trained to stop on the spot, when given the command, off leash walking, and hand signals. One day I opened my front door, and across the street my boy Caesar saw his best dog friend and bolted down the stairs. I yelled stop and he froze halfway down the stairs. At the same time a car was passing by. I don’t think giving him a cookie at the time would have saved his life, because his desire to play with his doggy friend was stronger than any treat I could have offered him. If used properly and ethically, all training tools should be used appropriately for the dog’s personality as well as the circumstances. It is my responsibility as their Mom to keep them safe and well balanced.

I was training a dog with leash reactivity who had been to another "professional" trainer. The other trainer told the owner every time the dog was given a command, blast the dog at level 20 (mini educator) at the same time. Whether the dog was complying or not, level 20 every time. If the dog reacted to another dog, blast it at level 60. The dog quickly learned to avoid the sight of the collar, creating issues when getting ready for walks (understandably). When the collar was on the dog, he learned to rub the receiver on the ground until it no longer made contact. When I began reconditioning the e collar, I found that his working level is 3. That's right, 3. It took a while, but he eventually came to trust the collar and his owner again. Once he was ready, I introduced corrections the right way, and now he is no longer reactive and can enjoy off leash freedom. His emergency boost level is 15. That's under the "working level" the other trainer set for him. The moral, just because someone says their a "trainer" doesn't mean they know what their doing.

@@DF-te2vm It is not a matter of need, why limit the amount of tools you use that allow you to effectively, more easily, and more clearly communicate to your dog simply because of human bias? Also using an e collar, or any tool, properly and responsibly is not saying that the dog is too dumb to work without the tool, it is simply to say that the owner/handler is intelligent enough to utilize effective and humane tools that will help their dog exceed, and allow them more freedoms to live a better, more fulfilled life.

I do not walk with a prong collar it can make a hot dog more hot. I use leashes. I've had success with my dogs coming in. I am not a dog trainer. I only rescue and foster dogs til they can get into a rescue and be adopted out. These dogs need love and guidance not heavy handed tactics. So I agree with what you are saying. They serve a purpose only if you know how to use it for the right purpose. This dog was having a lot of fun in the snow. He didn't even realize he was learning. That's what you need a relaxed dog. Just saw this today 4/30/2024. This IS an excellent explanation and description regarding these two tools. SO, yes, I can see why you have become a respected trainer. And, YES, I now understand why my attitude towards people who use these tolls is SO vehement and angry - it's because , just about everyone I've seen using these tools on their dogs have clearly NOT been using them correctly. I witnessed a fellow a few years ago showing off the ecollar on his dog by shocking the dog repeatedly even thought the dog wasn't moving. I've also witnessed a woman, last year, who used BOTH prong and ecollar on her GSD and I recall when her 3 yr. old GSD ran out of sight to see another dog, to socialize, and she called him, the next thing I heard was the loudest yelp/scream I've ever heard from a dog. Yes, he ran back but I was done with this woman. When I had my previous GSD, a guy walked into a pet food store with his GSD, who was wearing a prong collar ( mine was on a flat collar) and for some reason, I got the feeling that the other GSD was not "happy?" "calm?" At any rate, he went after my GSD who didn't fight but sure got out of the way and I remember saying to that guy " You're dog's aggressive because of the prong collar." So I probably owe you an apology for being critical about your training methods - sorry! - but until I watched this video, I honestly thought you were like all the idiots out there who MIS-use and abuse their dogs with these tools. Perhaps, these tools should only be sold by trainers like yourself, AFTER they take training with you. Pet stores are all about money so they sell these things to anyone which is what causes too many reactive, angry and frightened dogs

My puppy's training is coming along pretty well without an e-collar (although I do have a pinch collar--which honestly doesn't seem to do much that her regular collar doesn't already do). Anyway, I was thinking of getting an e-collar for the digging in the yard. Is that a stupid thing to do? I already covered up the area under the deck where she used to go digging, but now she found another fun spot--and just as my terrible luck would have it, that spot is a grassy spot. So, she's just tearing up the grass in the yard. I would like to be able to let her roam the yard more without constant supervision, so I figure an e-collar might help me form a strong unpleasant association with digging in the yard every time I catch her mid dig. As of now, she stops when I tell her to, but it's the starting that's the real issue, not the stopping. She doesn't seem to know (or care) that I don't want her to dig in the yard. I also, don't really have a sand pit or other good area that works well for a designated digging area. Long story short--would it be a terrible idea for me to get that e-collar under these circumstances? My puppy is 4 and a half months old.

@JB_Hobbies 3 жыл бұрын
@@jacobhartwell8211 not a helpful comment. I understand some of the benefits of a pinch collar, and I’ll admit I’m no expert. But, for my situation, it doesn’t seem to do much more than my dog’s regular collar because she is very responsive to collar pressure and really doesn’t fight it. As soon as she feels pressure, she usually stops pulling. The only exception to this is if there is something that gets her attention that she gets alert and excited by (and usually barks). Typically, in that scenario, a combination of “look at me” and “leave it” gets her to stop. Now, maybe I can’t tell how well the pinch collar is working because I almost always walk her with it on, but either way, I use a combination of a “pace” and “slow down” command to get her to walk with little or no tension on the leash. My dog is by no means perfect, but under most normal circumstances she behaves the same way whether on a regular collar, pinch collar, or harness. The only time where she really struggles is when we take both dogs out and she gets separated from the other dog. She pulls pretty hard there, but the pinch collar doesn’t do much to dissuade her from pulling in that scenario. I have to use commands and sometimes I need to redirect her pulling. Maybe the pinch collar helps, maybe it doesn’t. Not sure. She really doesn’t ever fight the collar. So, that’s what I mean. She seems to respond to pressure whether it is from a pinch collar or not.

My 2 cents: yes, but hire a solid trainer to show you how to work with it. The general guidelines are that the dog needs to wear the e collar for a while before the e collar using it (dummy/decoy e collars are available)and that when the e collar is being used it needs to happen at the onset of the digging with you out of the dog's sight. It is always a good idea to supervise the dog when the dog is in the yard. Best of luck to you.

So true. I personally think that prong collars and e-collars can be useful tools if (and that's a big if) you know how to use them. Where I live, e-collars are banned and using prong collars is frowned upon so there are almost no trainer who use them and I wouldn't work with these devices without professional help as I'm a beginner in dog training. So I will never use them, although they can be helpful.

Most of the time slip leads and or a dominant dog collar works better simply because many times choke chains get caught or pinch the skin which can be annoying and ineffective when trying to apply corrections. When using any of these tools pressure on pressure off is important, it should fit up high behind the dog's ears, and doing at least a few sessions of teaching the dog to yield to leash pressure will be most effective.

Exactly this went wrong with my rescue Malinois. He has redirected agression because of this. They teached him to be scared of dogs and react to dogs because that gave him either attention or a shock. So dogs are scary because they hurt. In the beginning he couldnt walk on a normal collar (just fabric) because once there was tension on the leash, he would panic and backup 2 or 3 meters. Now he can just walk on a normal collar but he still prefers his harness. He has grey spots in his neck (as a black 2yo malinois) from a pinch collar. He is a pet, they should have never used it on him. He is now 5 years old and still reactive (way less than before), is not as scared of humans anymore (he used to turn into a small ball when someone had a higher volume voice or when someone puts his hand high really fast). Because of all these problematic cases, the e collar and prong collars are now banned in the Netherlands which I think is good for pet owners. But even hunters can't use it to recall their dogs anymore.

These are tools and a way to communicate. Period. However, it is 100% up to the owner to research and learn how to use them. Then it is the responsibility of the owner to put in the time and the reps with the dog to really teach the dog the commands. And then proof, which the vast majority of owners have no idea how to do. I was lucky and found a trainer who took the time to teach me how to use them correctly (we were moving to a home with acreage and I needed reliable off lead behaviors). I was also lucky in that I had had an aggressive dogs several years earlier, and had learned a ton of information on canine body language, which made learning how to use these tools go much quicker, and helped me be more effective. We now live in a world where people want things fixed with minimal effort. They don’t put the time in to teach the puppy from the get go. And the dog pays the price.

Well I guess it depends what kind of walk you are on. If i am on a structured walk i would not allow my dog to pull me for 5 minutes. I want him beside me in the heeling position, and this is what he does. I also do not allow all the behaviors you mention (the neighborhood gossip). Now if i have him in an open area then i let him off leash and he can do as he pleases because he has a 100% recall. I trained him with a prong (structured walk) and an ecollar, which i have on him when he’s off leash. With the ecollar I can reach him when he is off leash if i needed. He is low level ecollar trained. I used both these tools to train him. The ecollar was layered over known commands. He’s on a 5 out of 100. Its a tickle if that. These tools. are no different than your harness in that they are used to apply pressure. I deplore you to open your mind to these tools. They can be very effective when used properly. your incorrect about correct use of prong collars. The way a mother dog corrects her puppy is by biting the scruff/neck and a prong collar emulates that. This mother dog correction is implanted in their DNA and is needed in the wild because if they dont listen to mom... they die. Will a mother dog try and choke the chit out of her puppy with a "correction bite" NO... no a mother snips or tugs at the scruff/neck and thats all is needed with a prong/command collar. YOU DONT try and choke the chit out of your dog... THATS CRUEL. Positive correction 99% of the time and only emulate the "mother correction" only as often as a mother dog would... only when its needed ONLY. Rest of the time act like she would and love the puppy for goodness sakes and for remote training... NEVER SHOCK the chit out of your dog... if you need remote training... only consider vibration. This dog was abused by electric and we all can tell. That is a classic over "electric shock" correction behavior. Stop shocking the chit out of your dogs... love them like a mother would and youll have better results.

She might not get aggressive because she's still a puppy at 6 months, but it's a 60 pounds puppy....I realised raising my voice doesn't work because she's stubborn and just ignores me if she's not in the mood to do what I want. Maybe some pressure would be needed, but I still think she's to young. Great guard dog otherwise. In our yard barks anything away since she was 4 months old and is very vigilant. In 47 years of dog training I have seen many tools used correctly and many not. But I have also seen many things made way more complicated than needed. No one knew what they were doing when they started. We figured it out over the years. Yes, you can mess things up, but it is not near as easy to mess up a dog than many make it out to be. And if you do mess something up, most times you can fix it. It is easier to not mess it up in the first place but we are all learning. I would always advise getting some training, but a little common sense goes a long ways. Trouble is common sense is so uncommon, these days ! I had a young lady, telling me all about how things were done "in the good old days" before these tools. When I told her she had no idea what she was talking about she got a bit upset and ask me how I figured that. Well, I was there ! LOL The first e-collar I saw, was like $600, an unbelievable price in probably the late 70s. It had three settings. High, higher, and oh shit. You had to catch your dog, take off the collar, and change the contact points to adjust the levels. High level, brutal tool, but still so much better than what we had been doing it wasn't even funny. The "good old days" weren't all that great. Especially if you were a dog, but somehow they survived. But, things evolved, got better, and we figured out better ways to use the tools, and got MUCH better tools. Given time so will a lot of other people. It's not rocket science. Relax, have some fun with your dog. Odds are you'll be fine. As for your bridle and bit. Relax there too. I was handling one of those for a couple years by the time I was 6 years old. That ain't rocket science either, till you get to a very high level. :)

Ecollar or prong collar are just tools, I don't think anyone really thinks it trains the dogs in and of itself. Just like all the tools that came before them, they can be misused for sure. And you're right a lot of people misuse them but it's not unique in that regard. Plenty of people screw dogs up by yanking leashes, setting wrong patterns, screaming at the dogs, punishing dogs by cooping them too long or beating them... maybe I got the wrong take away but it sounded like alot of hate on ecollars and their handlers and it just queue up the positive only trainers in the comments, yawn. Not sure if this video is old or what but all the trainers, handlers I know of use ecollars heck even lackland airforce base trainers I have talked to use them for their service dogs... It's pretty mainstream in ipo etc here on east coast. Such a great tool when used properly and can speed up training. The correction can be so instantaneous and precise as well as scaleable/severity. My black working line GSD has never redirected aggression on me or the leash with either prong or ecollar and she's been shocked a fair amount. She sees that thing and it's party time, we are going somewhere or doing something. I can let her lose a lot more in areas with deer, coyotes, foxes, etc and still be able to recall her reliably also. At some point you had to learn how to use the ecollar for the first time and I bet you weren't using it perfectly but that didn't make it a not good tool or not worth putting time in with it. Amateur handlers can use books or training sessions with pros to get the basics but it's similar to my 50ft line that needs direction for the trainer as well.
