In this video, Dr. Ben Leichtling discusses negative self-talk and how it leads to depression and feelings of helplessness, keeping us stuck in unhealthy cycles and patterns.
Those little voices that plague us, especially at night when we can't sleep, that remind us of all of our failures and inadequacies, are often voices from our past. These are the voices that repeat all the negative things our parents, siblings or fake friends said about us in our early years, the things that made us feel guilty and ashamed.
These thoughts might reflect things that happened to us or were said to us in the past, but they are our voices today, and continuing to listen to them and accept all of the negative things they are saying to us amounts to self-bullying. Self-bullying feeds into an emotional cycle that just leads to more self-blame and self-bullying. Instead, we must take steps to replace the things we say to ourselves with positive messages that lead to emotional healing and real progress towards the kind of life we deserve.
Call Dr. Ben at 1-877-8BULLIEs to discuss your situation and explore ways to break your cycle of self-bullying.
Sometimes self-bullying as an adult finds its roots in the cycle of abusive treatment that a person receives in childhood at the hands of toxic, bullying parents. Dr. Leichtling touches upon dealing with toxic parents in the video at this link:
