Comedian and playwright Andrew Doyle on the "new puritans" and their godawful religion of social justice.
reason.com/video/2022/11/02/h...
--------------
Over the past decade, no social critic has been more withering toward identity politics and cancel culture than Andrew Doyle, the playwright, comedian, and journalist from Northern Ireland. Whether it's creating the parodic Twitter personality Titania McGrath or penning a best-selling defense of free speech, the Oxford-educated and openly gay Doyle has never missed an opportunity to show the folly of the political correctness currently eating its way through our universities, corporations, and politics like termites through soft wood.
His new book is The New Puritans: How the Religion of Social Justice Captured the Western World, and he spoke with Reason's Nick Gillespie about the sources of and solutions to what he calls the "frenzy of conformity" that characterizes so much of contemporary media, academia, and policy.

My wife teaches at a public elementary school. Recently there's been this 11 year old boy who has decided he's a girl, and the school authorities have decided to allow him to use the girl's bathroom. And they decided not to tell the parents, in order to protect this kid's "confidentiality." So.. imagine you're the father of a 7 year old girl, and she comes home and tells you about how this 11 year old boy violated her "confidentiality" by peeking through the crack between the bathroom stall door and column at her while she was sitting on the toilet. And you've had no warning about this. This kind of thing is why my city just had the first negative population growth year since the 60's.

@@serpentines6356 I am an American and I know who you're talking about and love them too! Also JK Rowling has a Baphomet tattoo and is a Freemason. I've never read Harry Potter either. But yes we need WAY more people speaking up to denounce this craziness. I am only 31 and I never would have thought people would actually think Men can get pregnant and we don't know what a woman is. Like I am in shock but also I've been speaking up since 2016 and have gotten Instagram and different social media accounts deleted due to speaking up. But a lot of this in the Bible. In Jeremiah it makes a sarcastic joke "Can men get pregnant?" And obviously we know the answer is "no" but some people in society and terrifying enough even DOCTORS and those in the Medical field say "Yes" like think about that if you were dying would you want someone who thinks men can get pregnant? It's like we are splitting into 2 different worlds. Truth and Deception. The end times. I fully believe we are there. Happy to find another American ❤

I pre-ordered a copy of Andrew's book for two main reasons: 1. Andrew is insightful and witty, so I'm sure I'll enjoy it. 2. I think the polemical message of the book is spot on and I want to support authors brave enough to take on woke ideology.
@amarissimus29
@amarissimus29 Жыл бұрын
I think only James Lindsay is better able to pin down the heart of the ideology concisely. The difficulty in defining the woke arguments is part of the design- that's why they are so thoroughly postmodern - subversion of the language is a powerful tool. It only works, ironically enough, because people are generally open-minded enough to take them seriously. Once you've opened the door to rejecting a shared reality in which we can all agree on at least a few irrefutable fundamental truths, you've ceded reason to emotion and superstition. Anti-enlightenment. And like a parasite, it crawls inside your brain, gluts itself on your compassion and ultimately leaves you a dribbling husk. Then it queers your kids, who will put you out of your misery. Unfortunately, they won't be reading the book, as they're illiterate, which does not preclude activism.

a great comment i saw elsewhere was essentially saying "if the biggest problem you as a person are facing is someone misgendering you then your society is doing pretty well" the problem is that people get disconnected from reality, especially in things like academia and hollywood where imagination thinking is good for the job. so people see the world in ways its not. a great example of this is glourifying latino and muslim cultures without seeing the issues within them, while hating on "cis white male" culture despite the fact the enlightenment gave us the ability to have a such insanely wealthy life in the united states and western Europe. its selective sight, and the way they go about "equity" is complete bullshit. you can't shut down the conversation just because someone is offended hearing not so great facts about life. its entirely possible to understand how a culture came to be while still also being able to judge that certain cultures got things very right and others not so much.

Wokeness is stupid because no one will ever be woke enough. You will drown attempting to tread that water. I liked some random guy’s take on gender during an on the street interview: “If you were dead and buried for 1000 years, the archaeologist is going to identify whether you were a male or female by your bones.” I dislike that if or when I’d speak to someone who’s asking me describe myself, that I’d have to answer whether I’m Cis-gendered. I completely disagree in regard to the extent that the early post modernists were activists in application. Foucault made a concerted effort, and had the support from a ton of “philosophers” of his time, to abolish age of consent laws, most certainly based on the post modernist view of the age of consent “meta narrative”. Almost all of these people not only contributed to modern social justice through the academic pipeline, but were also ideologically aligned with the modern social justice warrior of today in many, many ways. Second, I think it’s absurd that the term “cultural Marxism” has any anti-Semitic connotation whatsoever. Almost nobody who is critical of the Frankfurt school gives one iota of a damn what their religious beliefs, or ethnicity is. They propagated disgusting dialectical ideas, building upon what Marx and Engels laid the foundation for.

Using the term cultural marxism is fine. 10 years ago, after I'd been studying thought control tactics for a while, I could clearly see the totalitarian tactics outlined in Robert Lifton's 8 were being used abundantly by feminism, and the social injustice left. I just didn't know their source. I didn't know if the tactics arose spontaneously in our culture, or by some ideological agenda? Cultural marxism was the 1st wikipedia source I came across... fortunately before 2015 when they changed it. I came across all the big names there, Gramsci, Fromm, Adorno, Horkheimer, Marcuse. I read Marcuse before James Lindsay ever got around to it, although he's far surpassed me by now! Don't back down from these nut jobs! There's nothing at all anti semetic about using the term cultural marxism because bigots and bullies asserted it is. Ffs, it is an accurate description of reality. Horkheimer himself believed the word 'justice' to be synonymous with 'communism'. That makes 'social justice', either social injustice, or 'social communism'. And "social communism" is accurate. Cultural marxists do believe that all people are either oppressed or oppressor based on their immutable traits. Their obvious bigotry aside, that is "social communism"... "social marxism"... and "cultural marxism". Always articulate reality accurately, especially if cultural marxists are offended. Ffs, the title of this video is "stop pandering to the woke mob"... practice what you preach.

Intelligence is a function of historical geographic origin (statistically). Lack of intelligence will in fact indicate prevalent criminal behavior and high birth rate. Previously this pattern was identified, and this pattern persists without the slightest interruption into the modern day in the present moment. Racism is about a priori judgment of individuals, when they may not have the characteristics in the detriments/benefits of the group.

Don't forget there are several types of intelligence, one man could live off the land and and have no education, while a genius might not know how to start a fire. Geography is not that relevant when you consider that many tribes live peacefully without having the slightest notion of our version of intelligence. It's extremely subjective Intelligence is based in the environment you live in the needs you have. Musical intelligence, emotional intelligence etc. So once we look at it that way, we realize everybody has some intelligence to share if we look at it the right way.

@@serpentines6356 I don't think there is a climate crisis. Models are the only evidence I've seen for it. But the models aren't based on sound science. Earth's climate is controlled by the sun, not the man.

@@mark4asp That's what I hear. Also, people say volcanos have a big effect. I am just not a big science person, so don't know how to absorb the "data." I love mother nature, but where I live the whole county, everyone in office is about stopping "climate change" and it's never made much sense to me. Drives me nuts. If one doesn't go along with it you might as well be a complete imbecile.

I didn't see this so much as an interview as a spirited conversation between two very well-educated, thoughtful analysts/writers, and I felt Nick's input was quite interesting. However, as many said below, he needs to get better at holding his tongue and awaiting his turn to speak. By which time it's possible either a) the conversation will have turned away from the point or observation he wanted to make or share, or b) he'll have forgotten it entirely, at least at that moment. That's the challenge inherent in a good dialogue (I'm very prone to doing this kind of interrupting myself), but a respectful, skillful conversant will do their best to allow their fellow to finish their main point or story first. Andrew's really wonderful, but I think Nick's great too.

Then you may not have been at the most elite institution. That said, even at the elites, you certainly had a choice in this. But at the more lefty, progressive elite colleges/uni's, the concept of the problematic as analytical tool was more popular anyway.
