Ep. 373
Dr. Jordan B. Peterson and Andrew Doyle discuss the intentional irrationality of far-left doctrines using religious rhetoric despite the absence of God, their paramount desire to dismantle societal structures, regardless of need or merit, the argument for transcendence inherent in the pursuit of art, and how woke culture stifles genuine expression, forcing dogma in the place of fundamental truths.
Andrew Doyle is a writer, broadcaster and comedian. His latest book is The New Puritans: How the Religion of Social Justice Captured the Western World. He is also the author of Free Speech and Why It Matters, and has written two books under the name of his satirical character Titania McGrath - Woke: A Guide to Social Justice and My First Little Book of Intersectional Activism.
Dr. Peterson's extensive catalog is available now on DailyWire+: bit.ly/3KrWbS8

Andrew Doyle: "When I was studying as an undergraduate for English literature, you basically got the highest marks if you problematised texts: if you went through a play and teased out the homophobic elements, or the racist elements. You'd get rewarded, almost as if you were a kind of moral detective" Or a pet dog, performing tricks for treats.

I’m a 26 years old Iraqi clinical pharmacist. My name is Serraa Khaphají. And this is a message to Dr. Peterson. I’ve been a student of your teachings since 2017, and I cannot help but agree with the majority of what you teach, share, voice, and believe. The reason that got me to comment today is this: I’ve overheard my parents watching an Iraqi interview between a tv show host and an activist, discussing the concept of the ‘social gender’, and the conspicuous opinion -now- that gender includes the social, psychological, cultural and behavioral aspects of both biological genders and ‘supposedly’ other gender-identity. This ideology is being openly discussed here in Iraq, on the political front, but not yet socially. We Iraqis have the not-so-intellectual attitude to care about ‘trend’ a little bit more than necessary, and to be entirely honest, I am terrified. Iraq has been the closest thing to the host of multi-angled totalitarian despotism ever since 1978, or maybe before that. Politically, religiously, and socially, Iraq has been abused far more than what’s imaginable, and it is not getting any better, not with this. Why? Is the Left absolutely scared of their ‘theory’ falling out of proportion to the point they have to push it to another country to support it? Why this? People here have been confused as it is about raising their children since the 80s, and I know it never looked like it was getting any better (at least across my personal lifespan), but this? This where our politics still doesn’t accept homosexuality? I always agree with your notion about specifying a place to stay the hell away from, I never thought though, that this place would be my country, not to this extent. I hope this gets discussed by intellects like you, who search and seek the truth, and I hope you see this, because truly, never have I felt before to this degree, that things are spilling uncontrollably out of hands. Thank you…

So not like the growing general #'s of those at places like berkley? If so yes, it would do immense positives for society if more centrist, with leanings one way or the other, teachers & professors were to push out the insanity-only types. Hell, even self-defining conservatives can and do have somewhat open minds about supposed controversial topics. Might not go in totally but will often agree to a compromise. Imo, too many compromises have been either given or bought and things just kept going farther left. Now, finally some are saying No & having No compromise to offer. Can't blame though, there is a too-far on some things. As in the left's insistence of including adult hookup apps and illustrations in the sex-ed books pushed into kindergarten children's libraries.

Radicals on both the Right and Left feel they are so superior they need to 'share' with NOBODY, very self-centered. To prosecute is to bring legal action against for redress or punishment of a crime or violation of law. To persecute is to harass or punish in a manner designed to injure, grieve, or afflict; specifically: to cause to suffer because of belief. It's strange how these words are so easily conflated depending who is 'in charge'. The only thing I respect is when people reciprocate genuine kindness in proportion to what they are gifted with. I have a LOT of gifts so I give a LOT of gifts. If someone I give to does not have much, I do not expect much in return. We need to reciprocate energy in proportion to what we are given. Distributism advocates 'family ownership' of property and the means of production. “The family that prays together stays together.” - Father Peyton - The Rosary Priest All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need. Acts 4:32-35

@@dalelerette206 You have a great point that I'd like to add to. Charity without showboating is helpful to the needy, but only ever up to a point, and nowadays is often self aggrandizing and actually selfish, as you've pointed out. Helping the needy to achieve independence from charity and perhaps be in a good position to help others in turn is the real goal. The teachings of Christ seem to be highly effective, even if you're a "cold calculating atheist scientist" type. You just have to recognize them as such, otherwise you risk becoming like Sam Harris - smart and competent but morally hollow. That hollow is where this gnostic religion will find a home and fester.

What I particularly like about Andrew here is that he calls Peterson out on his crazier ruminations and speculations (which have become more and more florid over time). @@sundara888whelan5 Re Jordan's 'crazier ruminations and speculations', I thought they were obvious, but perhaps not. So here are a few examples: Near that start, Andrew corrected Jordan in his claim that only people on the left mask their evil intentions and actions under the guise of compassion and helping others. Andrew corrects him with: "is that really the case? If you take the example of the Third Reich, etc" and explains how the Nazis justified a lot of their actions on the grounds of protecting the interests and well-being of the (ethnic) German people. Jordan's response: "fair enough, man" [Now, Jordan wasn't yet getting up full speculative speed ... no mention of Jung, for example]. Later, Jordan claims that for leftists, "group identity is paramount, but full licentiousness on the personal front ... is also requisite" Then he goes on an extended monologue on possible replacements for God that has Andrew quite confused. Andrew: "Let me understand what you're saying here... what do you mean by licentiousness ... after all, they're quite prescriptive aren't they". Then Andrew proceeds to explain his view in a more straightforward way. Then Jordan suggests that maybe the Post-Modernists (using Foucault as an example) intentionally sought to undermine society to give them license to pursue their hedonistic desires. Andrew: "Are you suggesting they created this theoretical framework in order to justify that behaviour? [Foucault's pedophilia]" Then Jordan stutters "I don't know... I waver ... maybe the causation is interactive". In other words, Jordan is making this stuff up as he goes along repeatedly can't defend his position (as if he expected each speculation to simply be endorsed). Later again, Jordan asks "are the Arts a manifestation of a unitary spirit" (classic Petersonian language), and Andrew responds "I couldn't profess to know..." then again brings the conversation back down to earth. I could offer more examples, but just to show I'm not simply 'pointing the finger'...

@@DocnoXXXI read that simply as their approaching the issue from different angles. Jordan specifically says he’s unsure what his conclusion is on the motivations, and his comments were simply a thinking out loud sort of thing. IMO they’re well matched intellectually, and by that I mean complimentary, not alike, and it made for a great conversation.

Gentlemen, brilliant conversation on the dead serious nature of the topic. Two comments: 1) the notion of humanism is not going to get us very far, as humanism "gives prime importance to human rather than divine or supernatural matters...emphasizes common human needs, and seeks solely rational ways of solving human problems." Humanism is one ladder rung above Darwinism, and if we don't have these conversations in light of the Truth of our creation and relationship to our Creator, then we have a harder time seeing everyone as valuable, having needs and being willing to assist others without government intervention or force ("...St. Joan prized the gift of her virginity and defended it. She knew her dignity as a human being, her worth as a woman. From her example, we learn not to sell ourselves cheap, but to remember that Our Lord shed His Precious Blood for each of us-and no one is allowed to trample on the rights that flow from our human nature and from our supernatural dignity as children of God." The Holy Bread of Eternal Life, Dr. Peter Kwasniewski). 2) the comments on women and girls needing electricity to escape the drudgery of housework, to liberate intelligence and productivity are feminism at its core and smack of the Marx/Engels program (founded on that same Darwinism ) to destroy the family as the foundation of society, by main part separating wife and mother from the home. If you want to say that electricity aids wife and mother to perform home tasks more effectively and efficiently to have more time to spend with and aid husband and children, all well and good. But to denigrate the God instituted role of woman as heart of the home is offensive and blind to Truth.

Hello Brady, I work in a Christian rehab centre. It has the big advantage that the guys, mostly coming off drugs, are completely removed from the world - no drugs, no tobacco, nothing, and are subject to the disciplines of communal life including work. Gradually many of the guys begin to accept fundamental Bible truths and they slowly begin to change. Those who stick the process leave as new men. In your situation though, it probably helps to know that drugs are not the main problem - drugs are the symptom of emotional turmoil, and the emotional turmoil in the end is a symptom of being spiritually lost. Help needs to be applied at all three levels - physical (get off drugs), emotional (get some stability and kindness; deal with anger), and spiritual (get hold of some truth). I notice that you are 29. You would be amazed how many guys reach the end of the road and look for help at around the age of 28. That's when they find that life is not working, and suddenly their brains are mature enough to see this.

I am an artist too, but also a scientist - physics specifically. A balance is what you need, even if it might cost you a bit of that crazy unfettered creativity. I suspect you're much the same, since you're here listening to the good doctor :)

Listening intently, finding myself nodding, stroking my chin in thought, mulling over Jordan and Andrew's words with a sense of deep gratitude for this provocative conversation. I found myself stepping through a mental door way into a room that contains history, present, and potential future paused in a keen breath yet to come. I was shocked by how, but deep down not surprised, homosexuality is being used as a wave for the woke to surf upon. I laughed at the cat and the moon with its tickle of children's bed time stories. What a collection of thoughts that ignited so many emotions, you could not have created a better story. The path to self discovery for all and each of us, is complicated, beautiful, traumatic, delusional, funny, self inflicting whilst bringing forth our greatest endeavour to find our light in the darkness we create. Breathing in our oneness to find our together. God, Allah, All That Is, EO, The Universe: which name sits with any and all of us.....is everything. The delight of our times is too see our mistakes, our consequences of closeted children who have been brought up in front of screens, distant from the animals, the seasons, the physics of life and death....we see and feel the results of the full fridge, the immediate gratification, the absolute comfort of our cushions and duvet. It feels the feminine has provided the opportunity to be born away from this immediate scoffing and warmth into the masculine deconstruction of what was working- religious control, lawful obedience, the black and white, the swinging pendulum of extreme. As we are born into the discovery of colour, of unity- feminine and masculine, of compassion which includes the understanding that yes life hurts but you are supported in your choice to pick your self up and face your self to become a higher developed human, to be able to empathise with each other and not denie our painful growth but to hold kindly each other as we all move through our darkness into the light of our understanding. We can thank this time, laugh at its ludicrous - ness to discover how creative we are, in unison to look within and find that we are and everything is God, Allah, All That Is, EO, The Universe. Bless you All, most beautiful, wonderful, staggering and amazing human beings, We All Are........

Such a wonderful conversation! Thank you to you both 🙏 The importance of great art in all of its forms shouldn't be undervalued. This has been somewhat lost in modern western culture . . . the potential outcome is devastating.

Dear Dr. Peterson, I'm from Hatay, a city shattered by an earthquake. I've lost over 100 loved ones, and we're struggling to cope. Your teachings have been my anchor, helping me improve my life for long years. But now, facing this immense tragedy, I'm lost and unable to help myself or my community. I desperately need your guidance to regain clarity and function effectively. Sincerely, Can Tasar

The light shines in the darkness but the darkness has not overcome it. Saint Augustine was one of the big ones who pointed to this passage in Genesis 3: 3-5 as talking about the fall of the Adversary. And many theologians felt the devil, "the bearer of light", was trying to outshine God. If one trying to outshine the Lord then they are trying to become (or replace) the Lord's reflection.

Being Schizoid Personality, I just can't make myself care that much, as I'm emotionally blunted. I don't support this woke drivel, but even if it destroys society & civilization is reduced to smoking ruins, so be it. Unless there is some substantive counter movement, your solitary voice, or "Speaking Up" won't make a bit of difference, neither will youtube commentary, or criticisms. Until that situation changes significantly you realize becoming so emotionally invested in this cultural culmination of the radical leftist's ideological pinnacle of madness, to everyone's detriment is unnecessarily contributing to people's stress & mental illness. Accept it and also accept that you're shouting in the wind, ineffectually. Like the Behavioral Sink Rat Utopia experiments where all of the rat's needs were provided without limit, resulting in the entire group of rats going insane, female rats abandoned their young. They stopped breeding, and wouldn't even eat normally. It ended with them going extinct. It is the same for humans and we will too. The rats every need was provided for, living in an environment of abundance, safely housed in an area with unlimited space. This is an antithetical way of life, which pollutes the gene pool, as it cheats the Darwinian Struggle, Survival of the Fittest of Natural Selection - Nature itself negating all notions of "Equality" or especially tyrannical "Egalitarianism.". They needed predators, diseases plaguing them, a lack of food. And so do we. Misery, suffering, & calamity brings out the best in human beings, resulting in strong tribal cohesion, restraint, altruism, perseverance, deferral of gratification, and homogeneity. Natural Selection culling the weak and feeble, the psychologically afflicted, like me, who couldn't have survived outside of the unnatural western civilizations, it's peak of Utopian abundance. As Douglas Murray wrote of in his book, "The Strange Death of Europe", the inability of Europe to defend its values, traditions, and legacy as the root cause of Europe's decline. He described Western people as, "Tired". We are consistently below even replacement levels of birthrates, meandering through our tedious, boring lives, nihilistic, hedonistic, and a decline into complete decadence. Unfettered "Freedom" & "Liberty" without restraint. Liberalism fully realized. The west has been on the path of extinction. This is an entropic deathspiral. Utopias result in the death of the human spirit. Let things play out to conclusion, as they must. People should simply divest themselves of emotional stressing in perpetuity, as it's almost entirely out of our hands and if the worst should happen, well what a time to be alive. I never imagined I'd one day observe the world in such a state of chaos and lunacy, remarkable and what a grand finale to my life. Not as our lives were before Covid - our rat utopia, everyone sleepwalking through our monotonous, meaningless lives, taking life for granted. "Madness is rare in individuals - but in groups, parties, nations, and ages it is the rule." -Friedrich Nietzsche "Out, out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player That struts and frets his hour upon the stage And then is heard no more; it is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing."

I like 12 step programs. For an atheist or agnostic, they're challenged with believing in something bigger than themselves even if it's not a deity. For Andrew it might be the arts, for someone else it might be the scientific method or raising children. Using any number of frameworks to challenge the narcissistic ego of an addict. Believing that the collective wisdom of a 12 step group is greater than the wisdom of an individual can be enough of a challenge to evoke positive change. Just admitting that we don't have all of the answers is a good start for a life of recovery. The Woke fundamentalists haven't bottomed out yet and they're determined to take society down with them. As Jordan Hall has said, one of the most important things we can do right now is figuring out truth from fiction for ourselves.

I do so enjoy the podcasts where Dr Peterson is so deep into the present whilst mulling over the just discussed and at the same time looking toward the next. He was like this with Vervaeke a while ago and I think he and Doyle will become fast friends. They just think at the same speed and at the same level and as neither are a pushover, enriching each other is inevitable! They will speak many times I’m sure.

Around the 52 min mark, when talking about the Salem witch trials, Doyle noted that the more intelligent members of the community didn't refute the girls screaming witches. This was correlated to how the more intelligent get caught up in the woke religion. It made me realize something about both these scenarios. The more intelligent members of the community are being ruled by fear, both back then and now. Back then, if the judges and leaders had not gone along with it, they'd be next accused of witchcraft. Now, we all know how canceling people works. It's like poetry. It rhymes.
