the lesson will be learned, "if someone does something you don't like and you are more powerful than they are then you can legitimately physically harm them and humiliate them." That child just became more likely to punch someone for looking at their girlfriend in a bar later in life, and end up in jail. the evidence on spanking is very unanimous on the point it makes children more aggressive, more likely to act out in school, more likely to become depressed, and more, check it out

On the serious side: I think punishment should be proportional to the crime. If the child bullies, hits, or beats someone up, a spanking is proportional to the crime thus, the lesson will be learned..."Do as to others as you would have done to you, otherwise what you do to others WILL be done to you."

she is right, spanking only means short term complence. i did as i was told because i knew i would get hit. i was scared of my dad. he didnt have to explain why i was in the wrong, id know why i was in the wrong apart from one or two times but later on in life i never got advice or the help i felt i needed to battle aggression problems and most of that stemed from bullying at school and not being able to express it. When you are not allowed to express it you can go into depression mode because you know that to loose your temper is not okay. My sister on the other hand i feel has been allowed to do what she wants in the way of anger flips the butter at the wall or something else but was she the one who had to go to a counciler - no. Did she self harm? No. We live in a society where it is not okay for women to get angry or resort to voilence. My sister on the other hand, i blame my parents alot because they came harder on me than they did her about swearing, about practically anything else - so im more likely to get upset than her because in my head its just not fair

If the child is being unruly and the time out and all else fails and the child needs it it should be a last resort punishment the thing that you always leave out for purposes of your argument is that there is a huge difference between disciplining and abuse it's never ok to abuse but spanking is an attention getter not abuse and it's always examples of just certain things like not getting a nap but when one child is continuing to bite, hit, kick, lie,be rude and nothing else has worked a spanking is called for years ago when children needed it spanking in discipline never killed anyone there are a few examples of not using proper discipline such as spanking in my family line that has resulted in the child unfortunately growing up to be a no good deadbeat who doesn't have custody of his own children because of reasons due to the way his mother God rest her soul didn't spank him when he needed it and another currently that's 5 years old that the school has to call almost on a daily basis that he's hitting the other children in class and being rude to the teachers so I ask you if nothing else has worked who are you to judge and criticize the ones that feel spanking is needed to get results it's not up to everyone else it should be up to the one that's having to deal with the out of control child cause I'm just saying if back in the day my father had been told you can't spank your child he would have packed up the children stuff and told you ok then you raise them and deal with the brat and rightfully so I know whoever reads this some old schoolers will agree and some new schoolers will disagree but it's everyone's right to use the method that works for them

Wendy Walters No it should never be done. One of the rules of being a parent is setting a good example. Spanking sends the wrong message; it causes kids to believe everything is solved with violence and brute force. Think about it, if the parent is allowed to hit why isn't the child allowed to hit then?

NO. It isn't a "right" to harm another human being, especially a child. And don't give me that bullshit that nothing else would work. Just because you're ignorant of how to deal with it doesn't mean nothing else would work.

Spanking is not a bad thing if you handle it the right way. My dad spanked me, but the most important thing he did before spanking me was letting me know why I was being spanked and he took no joy in spanking me, but that I needed to know my actions had consequences. He didn't spank me out of frustration or aggression. This lady leads you to believe that spankings are only dealt by those parents that have lost self control...that is an ignorant and irrational conclusion to state.

Jon-Marc Harrison Spanking is always a bad thing because it sends the wrong message to kids which is it's ok to solve things with violence. Over hundreds of researches have proven that spanking does more harm than good no matter what the reason.

What kind of psycho dad did you have? I understand why some parents hit their child out of anger or frustration. It's wrong, but I can understand it. But having a parent that hits their kid without being angry? That's some sociopathic behavior.
