Good tip on color changes. I use plastic clothes pins for my bobbins that way I can clip them to the work after using each color so my yarn doesn’t get all mixed up but my intarsia projects are usually blanket size so more room to clip bobbins

Love your videos! Was just coming on to say that I’ve had some success putting the yarn bobbins in little snack baggies. I zip up the baggie almost closed and just have baggies hanging. It’s a lot less tangled than when I don’t. 😁

This is exactly what I have been missing 🎉 thank you. For the mess/tangles.. I put my bobbins in small bowls in the correct order and use a spinning cutting mat to worl on. When I need to flip I just lay the work down and turn the top part of mat so now my last bowl is my first bowl. This way I hardly have to rearrange the bobbins just the work surface.

Thank you, Toni! I never thought to use the waistcoat/split single crochet stitch to help with the transition stitches. You make me want to try this right away 😂 Lots of yarny hugs 💗

Great tips! I keep my bobbins shorter (close to the work) so when I flip I can just give a little shake and they sort themselves out. If they gave me mac & cheese duty at any holiday, I'd play the mom and make my son do it! LOL, he is much better than me.

I untangle my bobbins after I turn at the end of each row. I've had as many as 11 bobbins going in my color work journey and allowing that much yarn become a bigger tangled mess is just too overwhelming for me! And anyone that is intrigued by intarsia needs to give it a try! Once you get the hang of it it's not at all hard. (Certainly not as hard as the crazy intricate blanket my working on now!) And it's so fun to watch it take shape!

This is a very interesting video! I've done many color changes in the past, but found the idea of inserting the hook between the stitches intriguing. I had to slow down the video to see it well and wish your hands had been slightly higher on the screen so we could see better how to manage the bobbins (I get the twisted nature of having so many). I'm definitely going to give this a try! Thanks Toni - have a wonderful holiday season!!

when you've only got 2 or 3 colors i recommend trying tapestry crochet instead of cutting separate yarn for every color change. some people will find tapestry crochet more daunting than weaving in a million ends, which is where this method with all the bobbins becomes preferable.
@vickijackson5547Ай бұрын
I *almost* feel like I can do this. LOL - the only thing I don't understand is why the need to add a "fresh bobbin" at 22:32. It didn't look like the other bobbins were out. Also it would be nice if the complete newbies like myself could see better how you're managing the bobbins as you go. It was hard to tell which bobbin you were picking up as you changed colors. Maybe it will make more sense as I actually try it - but just watching I couldn't figure out how you know which bobbin to use once you got multiple of the same color working. You are a great teacher but I really hope I haven't bitten off more than I can chew with this Amour Sampler blanket! LOL
@TLYarnCraftsАй бұрын
We don't carry yarns across stitches, so we add a fresh bobbin because there's a new color change there, and there isn't a bobbin present already. Hope that helps :-) And you totally got this! Start with something simple, maybe one letter instead of 2 :-)
@cindymello5394Ай бұрын
When I made your Sweet Gingham baby blanket intarsia-style I always worked on it on a flat surface, and I would literally pick up each ball of yarn and physically cross them when I was changing colors. Not a single tangle!

I just did a chart for a Christmas gift. It turned out ok considering I've never done intarsia before. I read a bit about it, but I basically did a "full send" 😂 I had a lot of single color stitches and color changes so I'm honestly not sure if it would've turned out any differently with your color change trick. But I may try again and see!

This is what I do to keep my bobbins from tangling: I have made my bobbins out of cardboard and then I have created a cardboard box with slits in them that I push the cardboard bobbins into. Once I complete a row. I lay my work down, rotate it 180°, and flip it over . My bobbins do not get tangled that way.
@XDsymphonyАй бұрын
I don’t know how or where I picked Intarsia crochet but i got really good at it. It’s surprisingly easy at least for me. I suggest rewinding up the bobbins quite close to the work. I also bought pretty cheaper plastic bobbin thingys (I’ve also made cardboard ones) on Amazon it kept everything tight. I never get the yarn tangled. I did one blanket kit from Mary maxim and I hade like 30 bobbins going at one time. I would have gone crazy if I ever had to untangle

What about lefties? We can't crochet the chart as is. For something simple like this (2 colors) I am pretty sure you have to add a row at the bottom and at the top. But I have a very hard time finding good resources for tapestry/intarsia with 3 4 5 etc colors. Also you can carry the color in the background and crochet over it. It does make it thicker, but no ends.

With something like this, with only two colors, couldn’t you just carry your yarn and work over it as you change from one color to the other? Maybe that would cause too much bulk, or the carried yarn would show? Just wondering!
