14:00 Clem said they knew how to fly the ship, but the problem was they didn't know the most basic thing about getting it loose, the equivalent of taking the e-brake off, which Andor had to explain to them was just a lever right there... so they had the theoretical knowledge but didn't know the basic real-world knowledge about that model of ship.

The mothma family scene does tie into a deleted scene from star wars episode 3 where bail , mothma and a few senators had a small meeting about setting up the rebellion but they had came to an agreement to not let anyone else in on this plan even those who close them them such as family or significant other. So that was why mothma has to keep under-wraps about being part of the rebellion from her family

I think using The Tie fighter flying over the group to show how small the rebellion's at this point is really neat storytelling. When Opposed to the Tie fighter's is first seen in Star Wars it's described as "small" by Obie Wan, then Han chases until he is snagged by the Death Star's tractor beam. A New Hope makes the Tie look week and Andor makes it look unformidable. This shows the growth of the Rebels. Also The Millennium Falcon and Han Solo are bad ass. last part is a given. Thanks
