Fun fact: WWII bomber crews were also equipped with a set of heated underwear that circulated warm liquid (not sure which liquid) over their bodies to keep them warm. The suit was connected to the aircraft via a pair of hoses; the system tapped heat off of the engine's cooling system to keep the crews warm.

I had to beg my parents many years ago to splurge and buy me a bomber jacket. I’ve literally worn it since even decades later. Back then asking my parents to spend over 300 bucks on a jacket made them just crack up. But given how many years I’ve been able to wear it, it’s probably one of their best value purchases. It does have a rip on the inside of the armpit but that’s just because I’ve been too lazy to sew it up.

Hey Antonio, I have my G1 the Navy gave me when I did an exchange tour and my Dad's A2 with his WWII Squadron patch. I always get compliments from young people when I wear them.
@Torque709 Жыл бұрын
Yes, back in the late 80's the USAF re-introduced the A2. They were supposed to help with pilot/crew retention. We didn't put patches on the arm of the A2. The only patch we had was on the breast. It included our qualification/wings (pilot in my case), with name and rank under the aeronautical ratings. This was unlike our standard issue green Nylon/Nomex jackets. On those jackets we had on one front side breast, a Major Command patch (SAC, MAC, TAC...etc.) and on the other side wings/name. On the top shoulders our rank, on the side shoulders the American Flag on one side and our Squadron/Wing patch on the other. What do you think of the plain nylon flight jacket? I flew C130s and we were definitely not the typical "Chair Force". We flew into hot areas with little to no support personnel on the ground. Dirt, gravel and other unimproved strips. The Herk was a true workhorse and I loved the tactical airlift/airdrop missions. I'm now 62 (look and feel 15 to 20 years younger) and I'm a Captain flying International for a major airline. I love my job. Several of my peers give up on style and looking the best they can. The younger pilots and flight attendants notice this on our layovers, and I've had a number of them actually comment that they appreciate the fact that I don't dress like my fellow Captains. Your tips have helped quite a bit. I hope to see more videos for us old farts (50-60's). Thanks for the fantastic content and your service.

Back in 1988 when they issued those horrid jackets, only pilots navigators and the such were authorized to wear. Shortly after, all aircrew were authorized. My experience, zero insulation, stiff leather, annoying collar. Did not wear it often except to the office on "blues day". When flying, it was ALWAYS nomex, either the CWU-36 (light weight) or CWU-45 (heavy). For civilian use, got a very nice G-1 from a friend of mine who was in the Marines and outgrew the jacket and he gave it to me. Still wear that and my nomex jackets. Major hint. NO patches guys! So tacky. People always ask me about the blank velcro patches on the jackets. After 1992, or so, SAC ceased to exist, MAC now AMC, TAC now ACC. An AMC guy myself and was around around when it was MAC. I wear these jackets as "tools" NOT fashion. Top Gun destroyed flight jackets and gave us three decades of tacky fashion "bomber" jackets with moronic patches just sewn on every which way.

I've been wanting a good jacket for years, especially a leather one. The problem is fit. I'm a small guy (5'5" and lean), so just about everything tends to be too big. As good as those jackets look in online stores like Thursday, I just wouldn't risk buying one because I can't try it on first. Finding one in stores that doesn't swallow up my hands, doesn't go too far below my waist, isn't too baggy, etc., is hard.

I'm 5'5" as well and it's hard to find any jacket with the correct torso and arm length. For as many "big and tall" stores that are out there, you'd think there'd be at least a few "short and skinny" stores with quality clothing.

I've never rocked a classic bomber, but I've been wearing an Alpha Industries L-2B for a while now. It's got the MA-1 looks but lighter weight so I can wear it more than three days out of the year here in TX. It's another one of those styles that has been popular for a very long time, you see quite a few fashion designers knocking it off, some better than others. For leather, I lean more toward moto jackets - I wore a Hein Gericke V-Pilot for many years.
@kennixox262 Жыл бұрын
Go for a Buzz Rickson's L-2B jacket. You have the option of having the the old USAF stencil or now over the left arm pocket. Those would have been issued up to about 1960. I wear mine frequently as it is historically accurate, no patches on it - tacky. Alpha while they do have/had military contracts, most of their stuff is now Chinese made j junk. About 1988, they started a cheaper line for the civilian market. Since then, they have offered a high quality line of pretty accurate reissues.

Ive had a CWU-45p for a few years now, Much of the same rules apply in my opinion with the exception that I think they look great with cargo pants. Especially when you're going for a more military look, a good quality pair thats more snug up top, like some Fjallravens, look really nice. Also, to build off the point of driving, I wear that thing to death purely for its length. because its cropped above the waist, it gives you much more manueverability and you don't sit on it when you get in the car which makes driving in winter with it really pleasureable.

The easiest way to not wear a bomber wrong is to buy one from a current company that designs clothing that is more style conscious. I had a nylon like bomber in high school. I loved it. It was a perfect jacket. I did not have to wear a hoodie under it. It had a wool collar that could be inserted onto it to retain heat when it was really cold. It was a perfect jacket. And I fitted my frame perfectly. But it was very different from the Army bomber that my uncle had given me. The military issue jacket that my uncle passed onto me never fitted me as well. I lost that jacket. I went to an event and left it hanging on the back of a stadium seat. I recently had the urge to have another bomber. I initially looked at retailers who still make it in the same MA-1 style jacket that my uncle had given me. I order one, and if fitted me oddly just like the jacket my uncle fitted me. I sent it back. I have since ordered a Lululemon bomber and think it will fit me better. If not, I will edit this comment.

Hello Antonio, love the history of these jackets being a former Marine myself, I just wanted to ask along with the history you’re an influencer. As the influencer, and the plug for the sponsored Thursday Boot version of this jacket. FIT IS KING, and You are wearing the bomber and talking about fit, but you don’t give your size and dimension’s to be able to purchase said jacket. They do not have length of their jackets nor arm length in the size guide on Thursdays site. Like yourself, I also like to wear and show my watch when wearing my bomber or any jacket or coat for that matter. So i think many that not only watch your channel for the history of the clothes and possible pairing of said items, they also might benefit more and would be more inclined to purchase the items you talk about if they knew how the items would fit them. If you gave your dimensions chest, shoulders, arm length, cuff, and length of jacket from the back, then most of the men watching these videos that are 5’9”/5’8” and below could have a more informed idea as to what size they should order if they could even get a good fit in any of the products you review, in this case this Thursday Boot Jacket. I and many would appreciate it if you could do this as this would definitely help. Thanks in avance, keep up the good work.
