Mini LED can tend to crush a lot of detail in favor of getting an inky image. Sony's approach is subtle. Sony isn't the brightest or blackest, but there's more information in the image, so the result is an image that stands out and has more depth.
@michaelbeckerman7532 Жыл бұрын
Exactly correct. And, just as Sony will always tell you, they make their design decisions with the creator's intent in mind. They want you to see everything that the creator of the content wanted you to see. This is one reason why Sony's consistently provide a much better overall viewing experience than their competitors - regardless of the content you are watching.
@michaelzoran Жыл бұрын
@@michaelbeckerman7532 Sony needs to start making decisions based on the fact that it is the intent of the creator for people to be able to see their content without being forced to take out a loan on their home in order to buy a TV. Sony's products are ridiculously overpriced - the point that it represents price gouging. TCL and Hisense offer similar performance for prices that are much better. This is the benefit of competition in sales. Sony is no longer a sales leader, because of the terrible prices of Sony's TV sets.
@lancealex382 Жыл бұрын
Honestly oleds have the same issue, there's still crushed blacks too often but with certain content the black contrast can look stunning and you don't get that with the balanced 'sony' approach you allude to'. That said, there is absolutely a place for this balance and I can understand why people opt for it.

@michaelzoran Жыл бұрын
@@lancealex382 OLEDs have a couple problems. First, the "Burn-In" risk is very real - regardless of what anyone says. If you watch a lot of CNN or Fox News all day, you will eventually end up with "Burn-In" from those colors always being in the same spot. Second, the "Fast Response Times" of OLED helps the videogames with "High Framerates," such as First-Person Shooters and Racing games. However, the "Fast Response Times" of OLED actually has the inverse effect that HURTS the low-framerate movies on Blu-ray, which run at only 24 frames per second. This creates problems with Stuttering, Juddering, and Shimmery in high-speed "Movement" scenes.
@marksalamon619 Жыл бұрын
If TV manufacturers were serious about producing LCD TVs that catch up with OLED displays, they would be implementing and improving the "Dual Cell" technology that Hisense introduced in 2021. In the Hisense U9DG Dual Cell TV, a 1080p black and white panel was placed behind the 4K RGB panel. This functionally provided the TV with over 2 MILLION "local dimming zones", and as the tests in the RTINGS review demonstrated, the results were spectacular. The Dual Cell TV nearly equaled OLED displays in Contrast, Black Uniformity, Blooming, and Wide Viewing Angle. The Dual Cell TV was discontinued (probably because it cost more than other Hisense models) but this LCD technology has the potential to be a highly competitive rival to OLED TVs.

The X950H has the extra viewing angle layer and I regret not having buyed that one. Newer TVs have more dimming zones and all that, but, the prices are... too much. I would buy inmediatedly the X950H in 75 or even 85 inches although it has only 50 or 60 zones. The processor compenses for the lack of more zones. Inky blacks, superb viewing angle, great brightness, incredible picture quality. But, sadly, I just can´t find that model anymore. Great video, I thought you explained the misconception of Mini LED always being better than regular FALD TVs quite well, I saw this first hand when the QN90A and Q90T were placed next to each other the Q90T showed more detail and slightly more blooming but the QN90A crushed details to hide blooming and get closer to acting like an OLED in most scenes I thought the Q90T held up better because important details got lost on the QN90A. Also its more about the algorithm than the the amount of zones and you covered that very well.

@@ДмитрийКузнецов-п8ч not with a Sony and an XR Cognitive processor it isn't. Remember, the XR is the most advanced processor of ANY TV you can buy today. A big part of that is because of the software running inside that processor. The better the software, the more accurately you can control the backlighting. What makes Sony so much better at what it does is really its ability to not only bring superior image processing to the table, but also to bring superior backlight control as well. This is why, just like the video shows, Sony is able to "do more with less". Now, if you need more than that, they offer the mini-LED based X93L. And, as you can imagine, with mini-LED's and its approximately 800 local dimming zones (along with the XR processor) it does everything even better still. I've been watching a few other channels that have also discussed Sony's X90L as well as their top tier mini LED the X95L and how they out perform most other mini LED TVs even though they both have less dimming zones than most of the competition and it all comes down to their processing and dimming algorithm. Sony revealed just before CES this year that they use their own proprietary tech to better focus their dimming zones as well as better control the gradient of light each zone needs rather than simply being on or off. It's actually pretty cool seeing how it works and because of it they don't need as many dimming zones. Apparently their 2024 mini LED TVs will have an even better version of this tech and some tech reporters that have seen pre-production TVs in action say it rivals current OLEDs in terms of picture quality and deep black levels.

The QM8 is still my choice for best value HDR TV but the point of this video is to demonstrate what can be done without miniLED (and less dimming zones) - it's obviously not perfect as you saw the raised blacks and blooming of the X90L but the QM8 is still an excellent TV matching the performance of the QN95C more often than not. Fomo can you help, i have a problem, when i enable local dimming (low,mid or high) on my 65U8KQ, and when i watch monotone or monochromatic colors like clouds or backround sky...etc, i see a matrix of vertical lines on my tv, but when i turn the local dimming they disappear. Like the lockal dimming is to agressive. I was in their store but the tv there is the same, but the 65U7KQ doesnt have the problem..
@stopthefomo Жыл бұрын
Could be that the additional brightness is adding to the complication - swap for the U7K and see if this fits your use case better? You may not be benefiting from the additional dimming zones anyway, so don't spend more money if you don't need to!
@RipersEND Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the fast reply :). When i dim down the brightness the dimming zones are still visible, until I disabled them completely. When I watch 4k videos the dimming zones do a good job and the picture is fantastic, and playing HDR games, but in low quality videos you can clearly see the zones, i watch a lot of anime and some low quality tv and there the zones are clearly visible, but you can't on the U7KQ, like the algorithm is better in that tv, for low quality videos, it knows when to disable the zones were they are not needed. The 65U7KQ uses 384 zones and the 65U8KQ uses 1008 zones, and the U8KQ has a better sound system, but in the end they are the same tv, they could use the U7K algorithm on the U8K. I don't see the zone as a problem, they just need to update it, it's not a hardware problem, just software. I informed their support about the problem and they have acknowledged that it is present in all their U8KQ tvs, even if I replaced it, it would be the same. They say that I can return it and they will refund me, in the end it's a fantastic tv, but this problem bugs me. I am thinking of returning it and when they put out the 2024 version we will see if the problem is still persistent or I keep the tv and wait for the update. Or buy the samsung when the price drops for the 2023 model.

No. The Qm8 will look better in many ways, but the q7 is no slouch. Qm8 will get much brighter, and colors will "pop" more. However, the contrast in both TVs is similar, and in dark scenes, the q7 will not crush blacks as much as the qm8, for example.@@tomtube1012

Panels are different as the QM8 has more dimming zones. The C845 is a step down from the QM8 but a step above the Q7 (USA). Picture quality should be similar but the QM8 should be a touch brighter with better blooming control (all else being equal) but again all speculation based on hardware specs as we don't have the C845 to compare!

I will say that for everyday watching Sony's processing is continually underrated. If people are watching a lot of shows that aren't perfect Blu-ray 4K the Sony just absolutely shines over a lot of other competition. They're upscaling and rendering of standard definition streaming apps is fantastic.

@stopthefomo Жыл бұрын
Samsung miniLED is definitely not "better" - having reviewed the QN90A, QN90B, QN900B, QN95C, I can say that the additional miniLED did not make the Samsung "better". The QN90B had worst contrast and slightly lifted black bars compared to the QN90A - yes, specular highlights were a touch brighter but the compromises were unacceptable. QN95C was definitely improved but only to match the QM8 - this is why the QM8 is my current reference miniLED TV (until next year!). Hisense surprisingly added miniLED to its U6, which was completely unnecessary as the Q7 without miniLED beat both the U6K and U7K. Personally, I believe that a TV does't need miniLEDs unless they have more than 400 dimming zones.

I actually watched this from my new Sony X90L. I previously had two TCL Q7'S that buzzed and reached out to you on Twitter (thank you by the way). I originally wanted a QM8 after watching you test it out but they didn't have a 55 inch. I ultimately went back to Sony (I had a Sony 900f after a 900e died just outside of the one year warranty). I've been very impressed with the Sony X90L. It's handling of low bit rate content I imagine is much better than the QM8 which should tip it for anyone watching cable TV which can vary per channel, per show or even per commercial. I do think this year's TCL remote is much more comfortable and the soft buttons are great. I also had a issue with VRR while playing Borderlands 3 on the Q7 that makes me wonder if it is present on the QM8. Turning on VRR for that specific game made it look like nighttime and the colors shifted everywhere when you used the stick. One area I think Sony needs to improve is the game bar. Other companies offer more features with their game bar. Additionally, gamers want gaming TVs with more picture adjustments as it's not always about lower response times for us. But overall, I'm supremely happy that I ended up with the Sony X90L over the Hisense U8K, TCL Q7 and QM8 or even last year's Samsung QN90B that I was considering. I don't see myself leaving the Sony nest for a long time. Lol The color and clarity are the first things you notice.

And all i knew was “oh this new invention of TV with 2 layers stuck together , back LIGHT with LED, dim individual light bump, n front light handle black…. Cuz plasma is too dim, LCD i has blooming issue. This panel dont u get to have BEST image” The word QLED did not exist. It’s just called --Back LIT LED. D FAllowing years, at least 3 4 yrs later, ppl bought $2800 SONY still got so MAD 😡 when they visit my house like “why is MY Brand new LED that I did so much research , look SOOOOOO DATED comparing yours??? BUT isn’t yours bought 3-4 yrs ago??????? Not ONLY your TV look more Newer GEN, u made my $2800 tv look like $800!! How is this even POSSIBLE. So strange.” ---no wonder SONY/lg ruin LED reputation. They launch lower LED tech , charge PREMIUM MONEY. In Asia the use to make Hisense/TCL etc make their high quality panels but turn around to charge ppl SONY price. Seriously --SHARP Aquos, XLED, (mini led). 2000 local dimming. JSUT launched in USA 🇺🇸first time last 8 yrs. Because its so premium but out of sight out of mind for so long , it’s SO “cheap” (for premium TV). In REQUIRING new customer phase. They are doing their 75” flagship (in USA) for $2999 now. THATS ROCK Bottom price. Thast when u hear ppl on comments of SHARP XLED coming back all FREAKING OUT. They were d ROCROICE of LED . When they left USA,,,LED innovation slowed. SHARP was the DRIVING high TV LED image level. N LG FAKE d Elite”i have made OLED, dim but black”. Bullshit, cuz SHARP already had similar QLED technology deep black , utter bright vibrancy. I am suggesting cuz u seem to be interested getting 75” . i dont think SONY come with 75” for 95L. 90L is Major down grade with Blooming. (Small but VERY noticable blooming) . U know how APPLE iPad, n iPhone screen just MUCH nicer than Samsung n etc. same thing with SHARP. I cant explain. U HAVE to see it to witness it. They use Diff technology that they have patterns . That’s why Sony LG LED users to be so ugy as flat blooming boring. U should--SERIOUSLY look into -SHARP- AQUOS-XLED-(MINI LED). (Aquos is there made in Japan utter premium) first time 8 yrs came back to USA. SHARP was d KING-of LED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They were the LG G3 LEVEL for all their flagships. EACH year, their Flagship were $400-600 more than SONY Flagship . Till they left USA in like 2015. Cuz their panels too nice but too expensive. Ppl into Play station just BLIND. They dont even look. Gammers could NOT afford it , family ppl go to buy TV they will ASK BESTBUY “i have $4000 give me nicest TV,” they will suggest ppl “SONY” for their high commission. SONY pulled what Apple 🍎 did to Microsoft. SONY had LESSER TV technology. So it went to SHARP to strike a deal for FLAGSHIP PREMIUM LED. To buy them like 2 yrs for themselves to develop own SONY LED. So ppl USED to buy “oh Sony so premium” was buying Sharp AQUOS (made in Japan) panel. Sony/LG/Samsung set shops in Mexico. Producing their Blooming crappy LED, with blooming, aweful colors, washed OUT!!! N still CHARGING BRAVIER FLAGSHIP price. -thats how they ruined d LED paputation. Due to preditorial sketchy practice of SONY/LG …..(BESTBUY would only suggest SONY first for a $4000 TV--sales pitch, sell ppl what they came/ask for, no need to suggest BETTER to close deal, like they do to alienate Hisense). N lack KZbin review, SHARP always had MORE premium TV. But they were PRICIER. So they were d KING of LED, but d TV branch almost wen bankrupt . Cuz their Aquos panels all MAde in Japan. Expensive shipping. Seriously --SHARP Aquos, XLED, (mini led). 2000 local dimming. JSUT launched in USA 🇺🇸first time last 8 yrs. Rock bottom price. SONY, TCL has RBG panel their color has weird tone to it. SHARP has MORE HIGH luminance similar to Samsung EXTREMELY vibrancy buttery Luminance . I cant explain. My old $4000 SHARP 2 panel led ruined SONY for my husband. SoNY is good for Paying ppl Suggesting their product as best. :)

Great videos. We have a 65" LG SM8100AUA, which I think was manufactured in the late Medieval period. 🤔Most of the content we watch is streamed from either KZbin TV, KZbin Premium, or PBS. Will we see a substantial difference between our ancient LG and the U8K considereing the content we watch?
@Renozable Жыл бұрын
You most likely will. Especially on terms of contrast and HDR performance. Your current tv is using an IPS Panel with low contrast ratio. Oled will blow your mind :-)

Thanks for replying. I've been unable to find any online discussion or review of the 65U75K with mini led tech which Costco has on sale for $699.99, so I'm not sure what U75K means. The model number is very close to U8K. Do you know about this model? Is it a private label model U8K just for Costco? Of course, no one at Costco has an answer. What do you think? Thanks again.

Buying a 75 x90l. Told my buddy yesterday and he said I should get a TCL qm8. Well I showed him this video and he's starting to see how superior processing beats out more dimming zones and sub-par processing. I already own an A80J now adding an x90l for the bedroom. Sony is truely the best

My picture processing is handled by a nvidia shield tv pro that even up to this day destroys any tv at upscaling ect by a large margins (even sony) so processing is something you can fix. Lack of contrast, colors and Brightness is a lots harder to fix.
@wojtek-332 күн бұрын
@@zadarblack That's not how picture processing works. You are acting like the Shield does everything, which is 100% not the case.

The TCL QM851G has superior motion handling compared to the Sony Bravia 9. When both TVs are properly calibrated, their color accuracy is similar. However, the TCL QM851G has better black levels after calibration. The Bravia 9 needs its local dimming set to "medium" to match the TCL's brightness in highlights, which reduces its contrast. Alternatively, the Bravia 9 can be set to a much dimmer screen to be able to slightly beat it on black level but end up crushing the black so the tradeoff is not very good. The TCL QM851G also has a significantly brighter screen overall. The Sony Bravia 9 has better upscaling capabilities than the TCL, but using an external device like the NVIDIA Shield can improve the TCL's upscaling performance to a similar level and arguably better has you can adjust the upscaling on the Nvidia shield something you can't on any tv. What even worst is most reviewers of the TCL did it before the update that came a few weeks after. That update fixed the EOTF tracking in HDR, made colors management tighter and greatly improved black level. Go read rting comparison of both tv then take into account the update and you will understand that Sony lost and at a much higher price. I could go on by example sony has a much worst grey and black uniformity and end up having more dirty screen effect as well. Hell even input lag it inferior. So yeah if you compare out of the box settings, tv not updated and low quality content with no solid upscaling third party device like a shield tv or apple tv. Sure Sony is better. Now check rting comparison between the x90L from sony versus the qm851g... Its not even close..

Fomo, great video but I am still conflicted after watching it. I am deciding between the 98" Sony X90L vs 98" TCL QM8. I will only use it for 4k blu ray movies in a dark room. I am a movie buff. A feeling of depth to the image, with a 2D image feeling 3D, is important to me. Both are the same price at $10,000. Which one would you recommend in this scenario?

Great video, and point. But if the Sony had the mini led and dimming zones of the qm8, I would get it in a heartbeat. Combining Sony’s superior image quality, processing, and color, along with the tech would be a dream. I would like to see the qn95c thrown into this fight, although Samsungs image quality, processing, and color is not as good as Sony’s.
@stopthefomo Жыл бұрын
You're basically referring to the Sony X95L which sadly only comes in 85" (for USA) - maybe the 65" Sharp with 2000 zones and miniLED will be that TV this year?

@@stopthefomo very interested to see how that performs
@techsamurai11 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it would be interesting to see how a Sony with 1,000 dimming zones would perform. The X95L seemed to be very close to Sony's reference monitor and it has 480 dimming zones. Doubling that would certainly improve it but I do wonder if you'd be able to see a difference. On the other hand, I do suspect that tripling the X90L's to 240 would produce very similar results to the X95L which is very important for subtitles.

I'm curious to see a Mini-LED tv with a 720p backlight Matrix, once the tech advances enough. I presume you could then have an 8K color filter on top to resolve the fine detail, but the HD backlight image wouldn't need to be as precise.
@shugo7337 Жыл бұрын
The issue is cost, it gets exponentially more expensive to up the dimming zone counts supposedly. I doubt we'll ever see an LCD TV with over 900,000 dimming zones tbh. It would either cost more than OLED by a wide margin, or by the time we'd get there, MicroLED TV's would probably be getting cost competitive and readily available, and superior to LCD in every way.
@badpuppy3 Жыл бұрын
@@shugo7337 I'm saying it would be a cheaper option to manufacture than direct view MicroLED, especially for future 8K resolutions in TV's 65" or smaller, because they wouldn't have to get the individual LED's so small, but still have a near perceptible contrast. Having 900,000 individual LED's will be a lot easier to achieve than 33 million.

I think this goes to show why Sony is more expensive than the other brands. You are really paying for a higher end processor and more polish. That being said, the QM8 still seems like a great TV for the price. So it really comes down to what you care about and what you are willing to spend. If you are in the market for a very good QLED TV, can't go wrong with either for most people.
