We built a set of these for our garage in the summer of 2014. They look as good as the day they were built. They are so strong and heavy duty. We store very heavy items on these. I'd say each shelf is holding at least a couple hundred pounds, likely more. I specifically looked for this video as we purchased a new home and these will be the shelves we build for the new garage and basement. Thank you so much for this video and design.

Dave, your video helped out tremendously. I screwed up in not remembering that I would be cutting notches into the OSB. Instead I cut the OSB to fit the length of the 2x4. One note is I learned that a 2x4x8 is not necessarily 8'. I bought the 8' that was actually 92 5/8" so I had to adjust my plans as I didn't feel like returning them for true 8 footers.

Great plans for a shelf. I made this last year following you plans to a T. It made a strong shelf and looked great at first. After a year in a hot garage that's on a slight slop the joints aren't tight. It was my first time building. Now that I've finished several project if I make this again I will definitely clamp and glue it. I have it really weighed down with heavy tools. It's ugly but sturdy.

My wife and I built this project over the weekend. 1 @- 8' with 24' shelves spaced 20" apart & 1 @ 6', three shelves each. We found while building the 8 footer it was pretty rough going getting the OSB to bend to get it in place. On the 6 footer we left off the front supports and were able to get the OSB in without much of a problem, we were able to spread the side supports just enough to ease the process. Then we put the supports in and nailed them down. We also made our template's out of OSB. We got a great tight fit and will be building more of these shelves. Thanks Dave

Dave,Thanks so much for this design. I just moved from a 3400 Sq Ft house (Including the finished basement) with a 2 car garage and a large workshop in the basement to a 1700 Sq Ft home in Florida. My only workshop in Florida will have to be the 2 car garage and shared with the 2 cars! I was able to cover 2 of the 3 walls with these shelves custom made for the space available. The last wall will follow later. It worked great and eased my stress over downsizing. Thanks again.

Thanks for the video Dave. I made two of these in the past couple of days. I had Home Depot make all the cuts (except the notches on the OSB) so total construction time was only 2 1/2 hours each. I used yellow construction (framing) screws instead of drywall screws for added strength. These things are solid.

Great idea for simple shelves! Just a couple of comments. First, I would use deck screws instead of drywall screws. Drywall screws don’t have the shear strength that deck screws have. Second, it will save a lot of time if you cut your OSB 3” shorter and forget the notch. That 1 1/2” on either side is pretty much wasted space anyway because of the vertical 2X4. Also, this allows you to assemble all the 2X4’s then merely slide in the OSB shelves instead of going through all the trouble of having to lay the shelf unit on its back, flip it, etc. Finally, I would recommend adding a bead of wood glue under the osb shelves and either screwing them on or using a finish nailer.
@DaveWirth3 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you said. Someone commented below about drywall screws only having like 50lb shear strength. And fitting the boards was a pain.

NOTE: Dave's introduction in the video: "show you how to build a simple storage shelf..." First, like others have stated, use structural screws not drywall screws as they are like a piece of ceramic; any side tension and they will shear off (snap off). Two by Fours? You must be planning to store a lot of heavy weighted stuff. I would have used 1X3's with half the expanse. I don't stack heavy weighted items vertically. I also have heavy items closer to the floor and store items 25 to 50 pounds heavier each shelf up from bottom. Anything on the top shelf weights 25 pounds or less. You will be amazed at how much weight a 1X3 inch shelving unit will hold. I've taken 1X3's ripped down the middle leaving roughly 1X1.25 to build shelving units for in the house storage. Again 4 foot expanse using quarter inch OSB produces a great storage shelf for things like food stuffs, reams of printer paper, containers that you don't seem to fit in closets or cupboards. The "ladder shelf" presents its problems which you show in your video. Here's a tip about your shelving. The board doesn't need to be one piece. It can be sawed midway, or rather than one or two solid boards the shelving could be screwed 2 inch wide boards giving a slotted look. Just as sturdy, less weight and bulkiness, and less hassle when constructing. Great videos. NOTE: I realize my comments are 4.5 years after the fact. This is a great video for non-woodworkers or part time at home woodworkers. No difficult joints cut, easy build design. Anyone that criticizes Dave's construction technique other than the use of screw type is confusing the non-wood worker that would like to try this project with either few tools and/or little knowledge of woodworking. Again Dave, Great video.

You also state that you store heavier items on the top as you store your way up!!! ............ " I also have heavy items closer to the floor and store items 25 to 50 pounds heavier each shelf up from bottom." yikes.
@MoTown442407 жыл бұрын
No, I said "I also have heavy items closer to the floor and store items 25 to 50 pounds heavier each shelf from bottom". Maybe the last part of the sentence is confusing you. Nothing greater than 50 pounds is stored on the 3rd or 4th shelf from the floor. Heaviest items stored only on bottom shelf and items weighing between heaviest and 3rd shelf weight are stored on 2nd shelf. My choice of words not correct so here's better explanation: up to 25 pounds on top shelf; up to 50 pounds on 3rd shelf; up to 75 pounds on 2nd shelf; 100 pounds on bottom. Anything greater than 100 pounds requires a more beefier shelving unit.

Dave - one quick comment/suggestion for folks building these - use deck/structural screws, not long drywall screws. Drywall screws are brittle and will shear under load when least expected. Structural screws are almost the same cost, drive in as good or better, and are safer under load. Keep up the good work.

3 things I like about this build vs. most of the others you see on YT: (1) the shelves go right up to the edge of the overall profile of the unit on all sides, (2) the vertical supports are oriented to have the narrower face showing to the front of the shelves, so it's easier to access everything from the front, and (3) if your garage has a concrete footing at the base like mine does, the shelves already protrude out from the vertical supports, so you don't need to cut down the vertical supports to get everything flush against the wall. Well worth the extra cutting of notches IMO
@DaveWirth10 жыл бұрын
Ya you're right about the top shelf, it's not really attached. It's just sitting on top. So far I haven't really had a problem with it. If you are concerned you could always screw or nail it down to the 2x4's.
@Lbcb3410 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. I figured as much but wanted to make sure. Thanks for putting this up. Recently closed on our 1st home and unsurprisingly all the extra $$ went quick. This shelf will suit me PERFECTLY, and is very cheap considering the surface area and strength you get. I plan on putting a few of them up, and using the basic construction method for other needs I have in the garage.

I cut out all the shelves with the notches including the top shelve and just dropped the top cross brace a half inch and the top shelf doesn't slide around at all.. just like the other shelves.. Thanks so much for this video. I am on my second set now.. My only goof with the first set was that I mistakenly purchased 2 x 4 studs that there 92.5 inches long instead of 96 inches.. I just trimmed the OSB and the shorter shelf actually worked out better for its location. Thanks again !

Building this now. You've made this VERY easy to follow. One question, how did you secure the top shelf? It looks like that top shelf doesn't have the notches to lock it around the 2x4 like the other 3.

Thanks for posting this great design, Dave. Can you or a reader please tell me a) do you drill the pilot hole for each screw only through the first piece of wood or both pieces, and b) what might be the maximum load bearing weight of one of your shelves? For instance, is each corner strong enough to step on with your full weight? Thanks
@DaveWirth9 жыл бұрын
+Brut Thirtythree a) just through the first board b) to answer your second part, Yes i climb on the shelves all the time to grab something from the top. but the actual weight i'm not sure, maybe 300 or 400 lbs, but that is a complete guess. One person commented that the drywall screws are a bad idea and you should use nails over drywall screws because of shear strength. I checked and saw that a drywall screw shears at around 130 lbs and since there's 5 at each corner i doubt that screw failure will be the weakest link.

The 2x4's are just pine. They cost about $2.50 for 8' boards where i'm from. The OSB can be either 1/2" or 5/8" and cost about $11.00 for a 4'x8' sheet. Use whatever's cheapest. Unless you want the shelf to be outside, then maybe use pressure treated.

Hi Dave, I can see how the joint is stronger than others I've seen. What about sagging shelves? That's almost 8 feet of unsupported 2x4. Did you experience sagging after these last seven years? Thanks.
@DaveWirth4 жыл бұрын
Haven't noticed any sagging over the past several years. i think the weakest point would be the joint not the 2x4. also, use deck screws or nails. as people have said, drywall screws aren't the strongest thing you can use.

+kyeza100 I would think that each tote would have to be about 50 pounds for the span 2x4's to bow. I'm not sure exactly what the weak point of the shelf would be, maybe the vertical legs, or the screw joints...

Great build. I've had the 8' OSB cut multiple times at different home depots, but they can't seem to get them EXACT. I've perhaps 1/8" difference between the best cuts. I know you have better tools. How have you dealt with inexactness in cuts? Thanks.

You are 100% right. The total length of the side is 24", but the 2x4's on the end themselves are only 21". nevermind Dave. I see exactly why its cut like that after building it. Great shelf man. I had a blast building it. I left a large third shelf opening and backed it with a peg board. I stuck my toolbox on there and hung the rest of the larger tools. Thanks again for making the video.

Do you have any problems with the plywood sagging? Do you think any additional center supports would be necessary?
@DaveWirth11 жыл бұрын
No problems. Because there are 2x4's running the length of the boards, front and back.
@off2theright10 жыл бұрын
***** It is a nice clean design but I agree 8' is a long span for 2X4s. You can always retro friction fit plywood on edge between the levels and to the floor. Space them as you like to accommodate your storage stuff.
@DaveWirth10 жыл бұрын
After building it I stood on the lower shelf and jumped on it, held up just fine. It will hold at least 300lbs per shelf
@MoTown442407 жыл бұрын
If the heavy items are kept toward the upright legs there will be less of a problem with sagging. A person does need to keep a sensible approach when storing items of weight on shelving whether using this project design or some other. A person must keep some sensibility about how much each item adds to the total of items stored on the shelf. You know, common sense...
@cheerstud139 жыл бұрын
Just built this shelf on Memorial Day weekend. I ran into a delemma that I'm hoping you can address. Used the 2' pieces, mounted to the 6' legs. Stupidly, I ripped 2 sheets of OSB in half, to use for the 2' shelves. What I didn't think about was the 8' 2x4's, that go on the front and back, which add another 3 inches of width to the shelves. So obviously, the 4x8 sheets of OSB that I ripped in half were no longer wide enough at only 2', instead of 2'3". No big deal. It's going in my garage anyways. I just spent a lot more time, cutting the OSB into sections to make it work, instead of having long 8' sections. Has this been addressed yet? Did I miss something?
@DaveWirth9 жыл бұрын
cheerstud13 Ya it was brought up, i screwed up when i said those end boards are 2' long. They should be only 21" long. The total width is 2' when you add the horizontal shelf boards 1.5" + 1.5" + 21" = 24". Sorry if it screwed you up, hopefully you got it figured out.
@cheerstud139 жыл бұрын
***** No worries! I just took the OSB I had already bought, and pieced it together. This thing turned out great! I actually enjoy the shelves being a little deeper and you can't go wrong with only $60 worth of wood. I was wondering if I should have braced the shelves with additional 2x4's under each shelf, but that may be overkill. It seems to be pretty dang sturdy as it is.
@peggyt124310 жыл бұрын
I have shelves similar to these in my basement storage room. I have three 8 foot shelf sections in a "U" shape. I used basic spruce 2x4s. I painted the 2x4s first because it was much easier to do in my garage before the selves were built. For the actual shelves I used white melamine sheets (4x8 foot) cut in half to get two 2 foot by 8 foot shelves from each sheet.. The shelf supports are grey the same color as the floor in the storage room. Painted supports and white melamine give the shelves a more finished look than raw wood.

Ya the only thing about melamine is that it's expensive. A 3/4" 4'x8' board is around $35, compared to the $11 OSB that i used. But if you want a more finished look then it would be nicer. I use melamine for my work bench tops and they have held up great.

Does it support a lot of weight in the middle . Did you do a similar project where you build able to roll/ spin on wheels like a cart shelf?
@rayh718 жыл бұрын
You could always add an additional 2x4 in the middle for extra support
@eliermaxwell59108 жыл бұрын
Awesome I final build my shelf I modify it and made it a rolling cart it is pretty heavy but awesome it came out really great your screw template was awesome that really helped a lot
@IanDouglas7 жыл бұрын
Ray Hutson would you run that extra 2x4 lengthwise, or perpendicular?
@rayh717 жыл бұрын
On the several I ended up building in my basement I did use a 2x4 cross ways for support

Oh man, I been looking for something like this for months,. You should really post this up in a collectibles/statues group, we have prices over 50lbs of varying sizes and every one struggles with finding a display shelf. I'm building a 3 tier one I want to have a right capacity of 250 lbs to be safe and have it 22" deep and 70" long,. Think this design will hold up to the weight?
@DaveWirth4 жыл бұрын
250lbs - yes probably. But as some people suggested, use nails or heavy deck screws. Drywall screws aren't as strong, not designed to hold weight. I think i saw something that showed that a drywall screw will shear off at 50 lbs.

Thanks! The Google plus link doesn’t work. Could you share it anew? And I need access to the other too as it doesn’t allow access anymore. Could you share it again? 😅

Have you had any expansion problems with the OSB On these shelves? I know that is one of the main things OSB is known for is how much it fluctuates in size.

Hi Dave....I enjoyed your video, and plan on plan on using your design to build 2 shelves this summer, but they will be holding some heavy objects, such as AC's. Is there anything that you would change to accommodate the weight?
@DaveWirth9 жыл бұрын
+Bob Masiello There's been some questions as to how much weight the shelves will hold. My answer has been, i don't really know. I only store stuff in plastic totes and one shelf i hold pvc pipe and wood boards. Someone commented that using nails rather than screws would provide more shear strength. But i looked up and read that a drywall screw shears at 130lbs and since there are 5 at each corner and that would only be holding 1/4 of the weight of that shelf, i doubt that screws would be the limiting factor. First i would say to put the heavy stuff at the bottom shelf to keep a low center of gravity. Then I would say that probably the vertical legs would be a weak point. That maybe if the shelf wobbles or gets off-center, the legs might snap below the bottom shelf. So maybe double up the 2x4's at the bottom? Other than that you might be better off just buying some heavy duty steel shelves for $100.

which type of timber did you use? pine? treated pine? structural timber? outdoor timber?
@nebulosa43479 жыл бұрын
If you use clamps you don't have to keep flipping the shelf back and forth.

I read somewhere that Woody Hyezmar is going to complete his woodworking plans book and put it up for sale (at last!), google him and you should be able to get it at no cost!

I think I would have skipped notching out the plywood all together. It seems like it's more aesthetically pleasing but you aren't gaining any real usable space and doesn't seem structural. I skipped around a bit in the video so maybe I missed something about that. Maybe just leave the front notch so it looks good, but zip off the others and slide that osb right in.

I built my shelves almost exactly like this. Except I wouldn't recommend using dryway screws.

This was great, I've been looking for "free easy woodworking plans for beginners" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Yanathew Wood Waggler - (do a search on google )? It is an awesome exclusive product for building amazing sheds and your own wood work projects without the headache. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my m8 got excellent results with it.
@ajfam8714 жыл бұрын
Yup not strong enough. They break easy but an easy solution would be deck screws.

so to make sure i understand this correctly the end shelf are 21 inches correct ? Thank you for your fast reply !
@DaveWirth9 жыл бұрын
+Scott Beebe The 2x4 boards are 21" long, yes. The total width of the shelf and OSB board is 24", because the front and back 2x4's are an additional 1.5" + 1.5" wide.

ok Thanks again, very much appreciated.

Very impressed with your design. when you say 2"x4" does this mean really exactly 2 by 4 i read that 2x4 is not actually 2" 4 " because of drying As I am in the UK I want to be sure to get the nearest metric equivalents you said in a post that...a the total width is the width of 2 2x4's, so 1.5 +1.5=3".... this conused me as 2+2 used to equal 4. :-) can you give me the actual dimensions of the wood in imperial or even better Metric Many thanks and great blog/video
@DaveWirth10 жыл бұрын
Yes back about 50 years ago they used to be 2"x4". Now they are actually 1.5"x3.5". It's a standard size for building walls in houses. You can use anything close to build the shelves, but an equivalent might be 89x38mm???

Nice shelf! I cannot download the plans for some reason.... how many inches in on the plywood do you go to trace out the cut out pattern to make the cut?
@DaveWirth6 жыл бұрын
Mark Dusterhus there's a pdf pattern at the bottom of my blog. Link is in the description

How does one account for the slant of the basement floor? I have a definite slant that would put the shelves angling away from the wall.
@jennylynne44149 жыл бұрын
+Ned “pedal4fun” Williams I would build it square and then use shims to level the entire unit once it's set on the floor.

Looks very nice but I predict that with the long runner 2x4's, in about a year's time they will start to bow in the middle.
