An older sib & friends saw Ike & Tina open for the Stones at MSG early 70s. They said most opening bands often were politely tolerated. You know...one more pee, get more beer, grab seat. But when Ike & Tina performed, the crowd roared!!! When they finished their set, the crowd roared for an ENCORE!!! Unprecedented! (Or so they say.)

What a LADY, I remember way back in 72 I got great tickets to the Newport Jazz Festival and had just listen to the closing act which was Herbie Mann and I thought I had die and gone to heaven and as we were all standing up applauding his encore and getting ready to leave, the announcer said please wait that there was going to be one more act, almost as though it was a kind of an apology, and that this was going to be some kind of Rock-N-Roll not Jazz and right away everyone began booing, he then announced the act was Ike and Tina Turner and you guess it “Proud Mary”. I have never seen or ever will see again a more power, more energy, more fun, more vibration, and more insanity of the audience then that night, that night will live in my memory till the day I die, thank you for taking the time and reading this. The one time I saw Tina Turner in person was in Las Vegas with my second wife, honeymoon, in 72 and we were sitting at a dinner table less than 10 feet and that was so exciting to see such talent and beauty that it has stayed a significant memory all these years...😎

I saw them at Fillmore East in June, '71. I'm a Grammy nominated jazz and classical musician (but who lives in early rock 'n roll, which I grew up with). But Ike and Tina were one of, if not the most exciting performers I've ever seen. Steve Richman

Makes me proud of American artistic culture. Tina was the product of blues, R&B and Rock traditions, predominately African American, of the Southern U.S. Her sound is known throughout the world but it's easy to forget it originated in a very specific time and place. As a white American whose eyes are wide open to the political challenges our country faces, and to the messages of division the Republican party is sending to the world, at least I can be proud of our culture -- primarily our musical culture -- still influencing the world. American music and its derivatives are a world treasure.

You had a nice post until you falsely claim that Republicans are divisive...with your eyes wide open, would you still say the same today? It's the Democrats that rip apart the fabric of this country.

This music Tina Turner was the first time I (8 yrs) watched TV behind the chairs of my group leaders at the Institute for the Deaf. Everyone was sleeping upstairs and I still couldn't sleep. I came downstairs and tiptoed behind our living room, through sliding walls, and then sat with both feet on the floor behind the chairs... my eyes were full of amazement as to how she could completely lose her dancing... I have admired her ever since, until her death. That was unforgettable!

Live musicians, Live vocals, High energy dancing and Sexy dresses. The Ike and Tina Turner revue were fantastic! For all his faults, Ike was a talented musician. There is a reason Tina wanted to be in his band. He can not take credit for her natural talent but he gave her a platform to shine. He created her stage persona down to the name Tina Turner. While Tina was the show, he created the show from her outfits, the lighting to arranging/producing their music and being the band leader. They're inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame together as a duo for a reason.
