Here in the Caribbean, we have always stored our rice in buckets with common salt and Bay leaves ( don't ask me why salt because I grew up seeing my mom do it like that!) When the rice is ready for use we wash it a few times to remove any salt residue. I'm aware that some people don't wash rice but we do. We don't have access to mylar bags so this is the first time I'm seeing it done like that. Interesting video! Thanks and blessings always!

Two days ago I opened a bucket of rice that I vacuum sealed 12 years ago. The mylar bag seal was intact and the rice wad in perfect condition. Vacuum preservation works when done properly. I am certain the rice would have been preserved for at least 30 years in the vacuum sealed mylar bag. Cheers.

Once you open them can you reseal them if you don’t use it all?
@yhird

@@lynnmorales1965 I have never tried to re-seal or vacuum a mylar bag after opening it. I use a large 5 gallon mylar bag in a 5 gallon bucket with two 2,000cc oxygen absorbers. This will preserve 35 pounds of rice in a 5 gallon bucket very well. I only open preserved food that I intend to consume. If I need to place the food back into long term storage, I would use a new mylar bag with new oxygen absorbers to make sure the food is vacuum sealed correctly. Cheers.

@@lynnmorales1965 Of course and the sooner the better! Or, you can just vac seal in smaller amounts to last like say a month or 3 just to avoid having to reseal product over and over. Keep product intact longer, too! Having sealing!

Thank you for your video. After hearing about "Bugs in the rice" so many times and never freezing a bag of rice in my life, I went through 35 buckets checking every one with rice in it and not a bug. Some of these buckets were from 2019, 2020. Then again I'm in Canaduh and I think they irradiate all the containers coming into the country to kill any invasive species. But what do I now? Our bags of rice are 8kg (17.6 lbs) and I just leave the rice in the original bag and pack assorted dry goods with it. I never pack glass or wet stuff in a bucket. That way I can stash the dry goods outside and they will not be harmed by our long, cold, and freezing dark winters. Good luck eh? We're all going to need it now.

I peaked inside and on a shelf was an old glass jar with dry beans in it. I didn't open the jar up but the beans still looked good. I left the jar where I found it when I got out of the cellar. I use the 4 lbs. white food grade square buckets. They stack very well in minimum space, too. I vacuum seal beans, rice, flour, plain potato flakes, cornmeal, pasta, salt, pepper, onion powder garlic powder, you name in smaller amounts to last me say 3-4 months, so I don't have to keep opening my buckets and resealing. Then I put the separately vac sealed foods in the big 5-gallon mylar bags sealed with 02 absorbers, throw another 02 absorber in the bucket and seal it up!!! And, whoever's reading this do not put 02 absorbers in your sugar. It will cause it to turn to rock. You WILL actually require a hammer and chisel to use it!

Excellent video and great instruction on how to store rice. I've done all of what you mentioned with the freezing it for at least four days, and adding bay leaves, but when it was ready to store, I kept the rice in their original containers and put them in the food grade buckets. For me, it was easier to do. I hope that won't affect the quality of it when it's time to use it. Thanks for another great video.

Someone needs to invent a mylar bag funnel. Something attached to a clip so you can just pour it in through the funnel. And wouldn’t round mylar bags be cool so they fit flat in a stack?

I probably go overboard letting it thaw for 4 days...You might try opening one of your packages of rice to see what it looks like inside.

I vacuum seal my rice first into bags, then freeze. Then I leave it out to warm up, and wipe off the condensation. Then into the bin it goes. I check it periodically and so far so good.

I always freeze my rice, flour, grits for 3 or 4 days, then out for 3 or 4 days. I put Bay Leaves in all my dry ingredients to store for long terms (Mylar bags). Thanks for sharing. Stay safe & stack as much as you can or can afford.

hi thanks for all the great tips! 💞 So when you use the buckets you only need bay leaves you dont need to put oxygen absorbers in?
@sunshinestatesurvival
@sunshinestatesurvival Жыл бұрын
I usually don't use oxygen absorbers unless I'm putting things in canning jars or in my large bags...BUT I did another bucket of rice the other day and added 4 of the 400cc oxygen absorbers to the top, just because. I guess I'll find out if it works in a bucket!

I've done both with and without O2 absorbers. If your bucket has a gasket, and you use enough oxygen absorbers with the rice (loose rice), it does create an air tight seal. You need quite a few O2 absorbers

I have a gasket sealed, Sterlite container that I have stashed about thirty boxes of pasta. They cost more but I have used to store pasta bags and boxes. Dang if I didn't see a weevil crawling in there after I just added four more boxes. Obviously from the store. Should we freeze pasta before storing? In Mylar bags, too? Also, how to store oats. I put them in Ziploc bags and froze them. Do I now need to do moisture absorbers and the oxygen absorbers in the Mylar bags?

I suppose it can't hurt to freeze pasta, as long as it doesn't make it more brittle and break/ crack. I'm wondering though, if you stored it with the store packaging, if the packaging itself was the problem...

I think so. I just read a post on a prepper site stating they bought two loaves of bread. Froze one. Opened the other to eat and found weevils! I've never found weevils in a loaf of store bought bread. Thanks for helping with my questions. Blessings❣️

You may have covered it in a previous video but I would love to know how you are storing your dog food?
@sunshinestatesurvival

I can't get very far ahead on the bagged, dry dog food because it will go rancid over time, so I isually juat have 70-100 lbs on hand. I just store it in a large food tote, that has a snap on lid/ gasket to make as air tight as possible. I like to store up canned dog food, because it will last quite a bit longer than the dry dog food. And as a backup, I know my dog will eat just about any kind of canned meat (although its high in salt, so it may need to be rinsed off a bit), canned carrots, peas and rice... And probably just about anything else he can get his sneaky little paws on.

Are the cheaper lids one-time use? If you open them, can you re-use them? I was confused when you mentioned "zipping it off". If so, you would have to wait until you had enough to completely fill it?
@noreenharewood8675
@noreenharewood8675 Жыл бұрын
If you can imagine how a vial with tablets that is sealed looks,then that's how those lids are. I would imagine that they can still be used after the seal is broken but you would have to use a mallet to close them firmly. I have one bucket with the same lid sealed with rice but I have no intention of opening it up in a long time
