The Network Rail staff who got the trains running again after the flooding have done a great job and deserve praise. 👍 What I can't understand is why all the control cabinets are installed at ground level, when it would be quite easy to have a raised platform about a metre above rail level so that all cable terminations are beyond any foreseeable flood damage- no cables to replace then. As for the leaves, it would help if there were less trees growing on the railway side of the fences. Some lines upon which I travelled in my youth are now so overgrown that the once visible scenery is completely obscured.🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲
@BibTheBoulderTheOriginalOneАй бұрын
I suspect the elevation of those cabinets would make it easier for them to be vandalized or facilitate cable theft. Regarding leaves from overhanging trees, I suspect local opposition to the felling of trees is huge.
@dkbmaestrorulesАй бұрын
They certainly do install cabinets off the ground in some places - Lowestoft got some a few years ago after a storm surge swamped the station - but I guess retrofitting them is quite a job, maybe not worth considering until there's actually been a problem?

@@dkbmaestrorules I know it would be a major job with existing installations but some areas are known to be at risk of flooding, as shown on the video. I think that completely new installations could be done with little additional cost.

Re Bridge Strikes. Our trucks fitted with factory fitted Sat nav’s are programmable for height, width and weight therefore if your using it then you shouldn’t have a problem, however, it’s only as good as the driver input!😮 As part of our daily checks we have to set the height meter in the cab to the height of the trailer, we have a full list of heights for each different type of trailer in the fleet but once again it’s down to driver input, our company does carry out random checks before we leave the compound , these are random across all shifts. However, there is only so much a company can do as it’s all down to the driver, no argument , it’s the drivers responsibility.

And why not have structures over the road either side of the low bridge made of hefty girders and set at bridge height? The trucks will then hit them rather than the bridge. 27:38 a really important correction to make - in a wheel slide drivers SHOULD NOT release the brake. Apply the traction-specific instructions which usually are you brake normally but earlier, and leave the brake applied in a slip with the addition of manual sanding. You don't know that other vehicles in your train are braking, and releasing the brake does *not* allow WSP to do its job.
@MrMWRMWRАй бұрын

Gents 25 years ago when I introduced wheel slide driving practice at Arriva Trains. We were spending more than £20m on downtime for units awaiting new wheel sets or time to get on the wheel laithe, which became a major cost. Training the drivers did help address the issue and reduce the costs significantly The costs were so large due to hire charges that ran on despite the vehicle being in the sidings. Training the drivers was needed to help improve safety performance by giving experience of a rare skill except at Autumn.

Leave fall has been an issue for decades - or it may just be the Uckfield Line suffered from lack of vegetation clearance before other routes! I can remember getting stuck on leaves on the predecessor’s to the Class 171s as someone I travelled with was a driver instructor & would on occasions go and help the driver get the train moving. The 171s were introduced in 2003 when I was taking a break from commuting, so it was before 1998🎉 when I started working locally for a while. It was almost certainly before Cowden too as that meant different commuting routes. So I’d say it’s been an issue for at least 40 years! Incidentally last couple of years there does appear to have been significantly less issue of leave slip on the Uckfield Line

I suspect the problem occurs after someone has been driving a vehicle of a fixed height for a long time. They then get a new one which is higher and just forget. Probably a few weeks later when they are not really concentrating on the height. It’s no different from car drivers driving into multi storey car parks, or car parks with height barriers and forgetting they have a roof box or bicycle on the hop. Happens extremely frequently but doesn’t have the same consequences

Looking at KZbin footage of trains running in the 1920's/1930's, the linesides are in most cases completely devoid of trees and shrubbery. I suspect that once steam traction ended in 1968 it was decided, as a cost-cutting measure, to stop cutting back vegetation. Fifty plus years later, there are vastly more trees than before.

Leaf fall residue has a secondary effect of being a good insulator such that where train detection is via track circuits it can result in trains effectively disappearing , this is not good for the integrity of the signalling system. Axle counters are not affected in the same way. Steve bissell

About 10 years ago I was working a Class 165/6 turbo from Reading to Paddington on a Sunday. There had been a possession on the up and down main lines on the Saturday, but this had finished, and I was routed from the up relief to the up main at 70 mph at Ruscombe Junction near Twyford. I was bowling along merrily at 90 mph through Maidenhead, approaching Taplow when the radio went off with a call from the signaller. I said ‘Hello signaller, driver of 1Pwhatever, on the up main just passing Taplow.’ The signaller shouted ‘TAPLOW??!!! You haven’t sent off any track circuits since Ruscombe!’ He put the signal 3 ahead of me to danger, and then crossed me over to the relief at Slough West Junction and blocked the lines in the station so I could get down and examine the wheels for contamination. There was a little, but nothing significant. It turned out there was heavy contamination on the railheads between Ruscombe and Slough, which was why I was invisible to the signalling system. Detection had been changed since to axle counters, and during leaf fall the jet washers run daily up and down the lines to clear the crud.

I drove from Herefordshire to Leeds and back during "Storm Bert". I wasn't delayed at all. Why is the rail network so vulnerable to weather disruption? Earlier, I considered doing the journey by rail, but it was £140 for two of us, compared to £45 for the petrol. Why would anyone choose rail when it is so much more expensive and far less reliable?
@boxingfan2281Ай бұрын
Difficult to explain the price as thats not my area. However Trains do not change direction as easily as a car and as such roads can go up and down quicker as well as left and right. As a consequence a railway will often go across the land in a more straight line than a road and that includes through cuttings which by nature is a low point.
