maybe the wind wasn't as bad at that time. Besides, if he hadn't landed he might have lost his job.

We had such winds landing in greece for my graduation holiday. Our Austrian pilot ace still made it in the first try. As someone who had flown several times by then (and experienced turbulence, etc.) I was relatively relaxed, but those of my peers who flew for the first time were freaking out. After us landed a german plane in the 4th try with graduation holiday kids from Germany. All of those were done with life, drenched in sweat from top to bottom, some crying, some saying thanks that they were still alive, etc. We had to cross the sea to another island on a ferry that day, which did not happen, because the ferry could not dock since the wind kept blowing it away from the dock (even tho basically the whole town had come try help pull the ferry in with the ropes), so after about 45 minutes of trying they diverted the ferry to another island where the wind could not effect the docking as much. So we spent our first night on the wrong island :-p

Great captures. To be honest, if I were in charge of the airport that day, I think I would have just closed and had all incoming flights divert until conditions improved. Those were some of the most brutally dangerous attempts I have seen, especially the first one.

I live there. Sometimes it's entertaining, sometimes it's horrifying.
Very little crosswind actually, Rwy 33, wind variable between 290-350 32G47 kts gives an average of 15 kts or less crosswind component. The difficulty was the severe turbulence at low level, the swirling wind comming off the mountains. Just another day at the office for pilots.

That plane at the beginning was about as close as it gets to a disaster, wow. Also, I'd be curious as to what the passengers were thinking on their 3rd attempt @ 18:12. Great coverage!
@yevs66376 жыл бұрын
I was in a fourth attempted (and succeed) landing with crosswinds. It's horrible, crew took some time to inform people what was going on (like half an hour), people started to puke ('cause of the turn arounds), landing gear was doing noises when being activated and it took about an hour to finally land the plane. I have flight anxiety ever since.

Happened to me once, landing in Mykonos with crazy wind. I actually didn't realize how windy it was untill the door opened....
@ohwell27906 жыл бұрын
Let's understand this comment. 1 crazy wind, wind speed and direction please. 2, did not use the ATIS broad cast for the airport, before landing. 3 Only once. sandra db, Sandra is a proper name, use capitals please for proper names. And as a pilot you did not realize how windy it was before opening the door. Did you land a RV or airplane. So, I gather from your comment you where a passenger .

My hat is off to these dedicated men and women pilots and flight crew. Who quite LITERALLY have our lives in there hands. We don't give them NEARLY enough respect as they truly deserve. However, i must say that first 737 in the very beginning of the video trying to land coming in the way it did sideways. Much less almost sheering a wing right off as it tipped to one side was irresponsible of the pilots. Along with the flight tower. They should have not even attempted that kind of landing and been instructed to abort it FAR sooner...!!! As that was one VERY close call of them having an accident and irresponsibly endangering the passenger lives.

@Christin55545 жыл бұрын
that was exactly what I was thinking. It was irresponsible of Salzburg to even let them attempt a landing. You not only have strong winds but because of the mountains you have winds from all directions.

why not build a 50 feet tall wall around the airport to avoid speedy wind. im waiting for my award.
@mark860016 жыл бұрын
A 50 foot wall around the airport would make things more dangerous (more turbulence). It would be more effective to build another runway at 30-40 degrees off the current one.

That Enter pilot should have gone around much earlier, he wasn't stable. No idea why the Germanwings went around on the first try....it was already on the ground.... O well...I'm not a pilot LOL.....
@Christin55545 жыл бұрын
do you suppose the Germanwings plane was already too far down the runway? That's what it was and if he had a strong tail wind it could have pushed him over the end of the runway.
