I always was of the mind that, at the end, Linoge was not trying to punish Mike Anderson. I think he was trying to reward him for being so upright and moral. He was giving him a last glimpse to let him know that Ralphie was alive, and would be for a very long time. It's very clear in their interactions that Linoge clearly respects Mike. He tells him his big secret (he cheated in college to pass a class...that's really nothing compared to the secrets of the rest of the town), and unlike the others, Mike eventually owns up to it in public. He fails the first time with just the two of them by saying Linoge is wrong, but when it matters, he tells everyone that their sins are nothing compared to giving the creature what he wants. And as for the heartbreak he causes him at the end, Ralphie showing what has happened to him probably deadens it a little...his little boy is something else now. And it's been so long since Linoge was human, I think he's just assuming that Mike will take his "gift" at face value to him: There. Your boy is alive, safe and powerful. Let your mind be at ease, constable, the one truly moral person from Little Tall Island. It feels malicious to us, but to Linoge, it's a kindness. Maybe now Mike can really finally begin to heal. Everyone else on the island that has survived at that point has in some fashion, with Molly having elected to lie to herself until it's her truth. Now, maybe with the closure, his wounds can finally begin to scab over.

It sounded like the sequel/ending of these characters journey, and I would love to see it. I doubt we'll get it, but I would have loved to see it. The storm of the Century is one of my favorite mini-series events.

I just recently watched this with my wife and it's way better than I remember. I agree with the assessment that it's the best of the King Miniseries era. The moment you showed when he was asked why he's in handcuffs, "Because I choose to be," chilled me and my wife. Really loved this miniseries and I'm really happy to see that there are still eyes on it.

Yep, it was like "an event" while I was growing up! Some of my favorite memories are getting together with either my cousin or beat friend and watching this, "It", "The Langoliers" (even tho as a kid I knew it was horribly done 🤦🏻‍♂️), "The Tommyknockers", etc. I hate to sound like the cliché "old" person when I say this, but man I miss the days when we had appointment television 😔

I may be the world's biggest fan of this miniseries. I watch it a few times a year, including at least once every February. I have a couple of fan theories about it, one of which I asked Stephen King back when he was on Facebook (he didn't answer). Andre Linoge is one of the most powerful villains in fiction, and as you said, all the more intimidating for how slow, deliberate, and controlled he is. I thought this video was fantastic. I've never heard anyone else express this much appreciation for SotC except myself.

It's been a while since I saw this miniseries, but I do remember liking it a lot! One thing that struck me was that Linoge was not a straight dealer. The boy had a "fairy saddle" birthmark on this nose, and I got the impression he had magical potential. Linoge always wanted that one child and manipulated everyone else in the rigged game in order to get this outcome.

I barely remembered this minor masterpiece... A memento of a "simpler" time (everything's relative) before social media and the attention deficit world we live. To those that have mentioned it, I agree 100%: these miniseries truly were Events one planned for and patiently counted down the time until the next episode. Bravo to the JoBlo Horror channel for revisiting it and reviving it in memory so we can share it with the next generation. Many thanks!!

Love this one. I always enjoy the small town setting from King as well as the atmosphere in them and Colm's performance in this is so callous that it becomes one of the most intriguing things about the movie to watch. As the viewer you become very invested in what he wants so much so that it keeps you watching to see just what the hell it is. I remember seeing this one back when it came on and I knew nothing about it beforehand so it was such a pleasant surprise. I wish we still got stuff like this. Nowadays most people are so obsessed with runtime instead of just sitting back and getting lost in a story and it's characters. But at least we can always go back to enjoy movies like this. What makes Linoge one of the most truly chilling of all King characters is his knowledge of the evil and corruption in every person. He _knows_ that enough of us are hateful, petty or just plain weak willed enough to out-vote any decent people, who might protest giving Linoge what he wants.

It makes you think of the choice hard. After having kids, I can only side with Mike. There's no way I could have left it up to chance. The story is all about the choices we make and the outcome. Great for a miniseries.

I couldn’t imagine giving up my daughter either. In the scene where the girl kills her boyfriend, it does show that someone like Mike could fight off Linoge’s influence, and the whole town could if they were strong enough. The problem is he was able to convince them all early on that he was capable of doing everything he said he could, and their moral weaknesses made it easy to influence them.

@@johnepants this, that’s the interesting thing, we really only actually see just enough to create the impression he was actually powerful enough to make that mass genocide dream a reality or why He couldn’t just take what he wanted if he was that powerful, any slow game remains part of the speculation, and some believe it’s implied he knew all along which kid he was after anyway hense Ralph being the only one who gets ever singled out by him. And it’s true that it’s lampshaded in the diologue when he discards the cheating boyfriend guy, that his mind control influence had certain limits, indeed no one remotely like Mike is ever seen being mentally controlled by him in terms of strength of character and will power. The only thing that ever seemed to get to him was anyone he didn’t have enough on so he keeps Mike and Hal at a more discreet distance. 🤔

Exactly common theme in his stories that deal with these entities is banding together to overcome them. Like with pennywise and they only had 6 people. I think the collective will of the town would have been harder to overcome. andre even stated he was sick.

The only thing I disagree with is the statement that Linoge could have killed everyone on the island. The miniseries goes to great lengths to show that he is powerful, but not all-powerful. That's why Mike was so important. He was the only truly "good" person on the island unafraid and always willing to stick to his morals. The rest of the town was so frightened of Linoge they happily gave into his demands and believed his every word.

Re-watched this a couple of months ago as it was casually mentioned in another JoBlo video. i did watch when it aired and remembered really liking it. This time I watched it in one sitting. After watching I went on a mini Stephen King TV movie bint of stuff I hadn't seen or didn't remember. Storm of the Century was the best (not including the IT TV adaption). The 4+ hours flew by. Deserves a blu-ray release! Sure I read somewhere that the *SPOILER* town should have not conceded because Linoge was no longer as powerful as he was and he wouldn't have been able to take on the entire town at once. Still powerful but using the fear of the town against them with smaller demonstrations of his power.

I have such fond memories of this mini series! I bought it back when it was just on DVD, me and one of my best friends used to watch it all the time during a sleepover when we were kids. We would try and watch the entire thing because if you make it through to the end, it’s basically morning by the time the film was over. It truly is a great story, and even though some of the CGI effects are a bit dated, a lot of cinematography and acting hold up really well.

@@JoBloHorrorOriginals Just my personal opinion, but I swear I think I can write a script way better than the latest version of The Stand. It had no soul "cafeteria mashed potatoes" as SK once said. It's been my favorite book for about 12 years. I've read it too many times probably 15-20. I have all the loose comics, and the big hardcover graphic comic in the bio-hazard slip case. They did an amazing job! I have 11 different version of the book, old Fangorias about it, all kinds of stuff! I loaned out 4 copies during the lock down. People know I have every SK book, I'll never get them back, but it's ok. My goal is to read them all! Anyone who ever sees this, read The Stand, if you can find the time. The uncut version for the whole experience. Sorry for the long-ish comment, but this really is one of my favorite channels! Love the diversity in taste and presentation! I hope the channel keeps blowing up!

Where I lived we were having cold weather and snow when this aired in Feb of 1999. We couldn't wait for the next night's episode and I swear it was like it was so cold in my house. Like I could never get warm! My husband and I watched it again last night and it was just as good as it was watching the first time! Stephen King knows how to incorporate the Bible in his stories! Michael Anderson was the only one who saw what making a choice would mean in the long term! I hated his wife for agreeing! I was on the side of Michael. One GREAT miniseries! A gem! I would recommend it to ANYONE!

It is pure King… all the tropes were there… the endless repetition of a catchphrase, a town where everybody constantly refer to each other by both their first AND last names, massive hallucinations, skeletons in the closets being revealed. It is Salem’s Lot rewritten.

Colm Feore and his character really stole the show in this series. He is a very calculating antagonist. It always seems as though he's the one in control in every situation he finds himself in. I also love how it isn't explicitly said what Andre Linoge is suppose to be. I've heard theories ranging from him being a powerful warlock to the physical embodiment of evil and many more. This is what great story telling looks like.

I was 14 when this came out and I still remember what a big deal it was how many commercials for it there was. I remember being bored with it and unconnected but i was young and preferred the blood and guts of a slasher. I wanna go back now as a kid thirties adult and give it a new chance

Thank you for highlighting this one. I have difficulty deciding between this and the original It as the best of those King adaptations at that time. As for André Linoge, I have always seen him as a form of vampire. He didn't suck your blood but instead drained your will. Like vampires who could not invade your home - they had to be invited - you had to give Linoge what he wanted freely and by your own choice. He couldn't just take. You had to sign that contract willingly, as it were. And of course, he had his own methods of coercion, not in seduction but in exposure which fits the motif of the winter storm. Overexposure kills in the form of frostbite, and amoral overexposure becomes this particular vampire's form of bite.

I see the ending as a condemnation of democracy. That what's morally right isn't dependent upon a majority's vote. The choice you see as morally best depends on if you view the dilemma from a materialist or spiritual perspective... They should have stood up for what's truly right in the sight of God. Hence why the show implies the Roanoke Island folk disappeared, for this reason. People were more rooted morally in the past because they were more rooted in God, they made the right choice spiritually and morally by perishing righteously with their souls in tact. My views are not popular these days but I believe them to be true... Great show currently on Hulu.

Lance Vleck is my favorite Jo Blo horror guy. He always writes from the heart and you can hear it in his narration as well. His videos seem less clinical than the other jo blo vids. This one is awesome, I watched this with my parents when I was little and it left a deep impression on me. I'll have to give this a re-watch. I watched it when it came out and felt let down by it. I don't think it would've been as memorable if it weren't for the awesome Colm Feore's killer performance. The main issue for me is that it trod similar King country. It's similar to Needful Things, The Mist and (to a lesser degree) Salem's Lot. Linoge is a similar character to Leland Gault and Straker and Randall Flagg.

I’m t is possible that they are all the same person, or all LEGION. Randall Flag already appears in two different universes within Kings Stories, so it’s not too much of a stretch to think that he is either the same character or part of a group of dark men who travel the world and cause chaos.
