Just got back from Pensacola, I have family that lives there. My brother-in-law and sister own a boat and took us out to see the damage up close. It is stunning. Even this video doesn’t do it justice. And the multiple barges that went “rogue” in the storm that are in people’s yards.....no words. Skanska will pay out the nose for this, I assure you.

There are quite a few minor damage areas where it looks like things hit the bridge and kept going after losing a bit of height. Only the two big barges were too tough to break and too big to fit, so they just sat there beating the concrete to death all night long.

After looking at the video and now retired from industrial construction, the damage is far worse than what was reported. I see lots of integrity problems with the concrete structure and lots of time for repair. Concrete only gets 80% of it's strength in 30 days and continues to get the last 20% of it's strength over a period of years.

Looks like at least some of the damage may have been caused by the barges moving up and down in the waves underneath the bridge lifting the deck. I wonder if the bridge was designed to take that type of stress.

I was presuming that the unfinished lanes (vacant piers running along side) would have a similar design to protect the other side of the bridge.

This is a bridge that should have been built to withstand hurricanes, looks like someone used substandard materials.. This bridge shouldn't have that much damage because of a hurricane. I've seen bridges built, like the one over Lake Pontchartrain that has been through more hurricanes, and it never had this kind of damage. This bridge should have stood up and should not have that much damage. Sue the contractor that built it. If the same company repairs it, I would be sceptical about driving over it. I wouldn't trust that company.

Amazing that you know what's wrong and who to sue. In actuality, the bridge stood up well to its Category 5 specs. It didn't stand up to being slammed by runaway barges, which would not have been in the specs.

At least it wasn't surge. That's how the old Twin Span got knocked out in Katrina. Many of those mid-century causeway-like bridges have spans that are held in by gravity. When the surge rose in Katrina, the waves pushed the bridge literally off of its supports.

Those barges should not have been able to crumble that bridge. If you look how thin the pavement is, it is unimaginable that so many cars and trucks go over it all day and night. They did a rush job to try to get extra millions in bonus money. They admitted to thousands of cracks but patched them up, or so they say. They need to start over on the whole bridge!!

Did the fishing pier lose a section in this storm? or was it removed to enable the bridge construction or old bridge removal. That fishing pier is not very old, 2010 if I recall. I have crossed the old bridge several times while they were driving in the concrete piers for this new section. I see all of the old bridge is gone now except for some of the pilings. Lots of damage underneath that probably will require removal of sections of roadway to replace.

This is from the storm surge. It appears that the barge loaded with concrete I-beams was under the bridge at the height of the surge and likely lifted the span, then when the water receded, the span collapsed. IT WAS ABSOLUTELY STUPID TO LEAVE THOSE BARGES AND EQUIPMENT IMPROPERLY SECURED!

@@hond654 I'm aware of that, but the center of the lane is unsupported. Any heavy vehicle that changes lanes must cross these sections, and given how thin the deck is, there is bound to be flex. Look, all I'm saying is, I've seen bridge decks crossing far shorter spans than this, but were much thicker. This is a bridge spanning a large body of water and is often subject to violent storms. This is not where we need to be saving money on infrastructure. Maybe if the richest 1% hadn't got $2 trillion in tax cuts, we could afford more sturdy infrastructure. You should see the colossal bridges and roads China and Japan build, and they have to be earthquake proof.

We were down there and crossed that Bridge a lot. Beautiful place. Sad to see it all busted up. It will be a while but it looks like a new section will be added. Someone mentioned that the Barges should have been towed away. That's exactly right. My thought would be to tow them to Northwest of there way up in the bay. I used to work for a Company in Palm Beach and we built docks, Bridges and Sea walls. It takes a good minute to drive more Pyle and fix that section. Sure is nice crossing it. I guess those tolls better be paying for this... You know they will just raise them more and say it is for the new section and they don't have the funds to do it.

It’s about 22 extra miles to add to a commute from Gulf Breeze. This happened before in 1992 when a barge being piloted hit the old bridge in fog. Took 6/months to fix that time and this is way more damage.

I realize it wasn't calm waters, but come on -- the bridge should be built to withstand more abuse than that. There were sections of the guardrail in the video that were pummeled, and it wasn't where the barges struck. Look how thin the deck layer is. It's pretty obvious the bridge was engineered to meet the absolute bare minimum of weight tolerance so they could save $$$. All it would take is one overloaded semi to fracture the deck and next thing you know, a tourist is at the bottom of the bay.

If you consider that a crane also collapsed onto the bridge it pretty much tells you that proper measures were not taken to move all construction equipment away from the bridge. All of the barges should have been moored elsewhere. Those things were turning up all over the place. The prime company in charge of this project should also be paying the city of Gulf Breeze as well as Pensacola and all the businesses that are losing money or barely hanging on for this stupidity.

I dont know anything about the concrete they used on this project but I can assure you that if a steel barge is slamming into a concrete bridge the barge will win in the end regardless of how good the concrete is.

The FLDOT has to approve the mix design. They also keep up with QA and the concrete is tested before being placed. The contractor has to abide by this on al DOT jobs.

Looking at the damage to the bridge and the bridge components the barges were carrying. This is what appears to have happened. 1)The wind blew the barge under the bridge despite it being anchored. 2) The barge got stuck under the bridge. 3) The waves caused by the storm in conjunction with the storm surge slammed the barge into the bottom of the bridge not the side. This can be seen best at 3:06 in the footage. This is a situation the bridge was defiantly not designed to withstand.

Many of the support pillars have fully collapsed into the water as well from the constant barge grinding for 18hrs

So this is the new bridge that was still under construction. The construction company barges got loose and slammed into the bridge in many places creating all this damage.. I hope the construction company has a fantastic insurance policy???..!!

Those barge companies should be fined to fix it. They knew the hurricane was coming. If they knew they couldn't secure their ships they should have moved them to a safer area.

John ... I lived near there at the time and the bridge fell during the late overnight shift. Yes, you could say there was traffic, but at that hour you can count the cars per minute on one hand. (not like today) As I recall, only a few cars went off the edge after the bridge fell, but the best story was about someone who did stop on time and stood there waving his arms to get others to stop... then someone drove around that idiot... too late!

Looking at the inside of that bridge like,how minimal the actual roadway was,is frightening. The 7 mile bridge(s) have both endured decades of horrible storms and are Still holding up...

beaching the barges, installing dolphin structures, building a better quality bridge and the bridge would still be there. They are saying it is going to take a year to fix.
