i work in an animation studio, founded by boomers that have no idea how animation works, sometimes we are in development hell for months, even years (the project i am currently assigned to has been in development for a year longer than its due date, due to the previous animator being unable to handle the client reviews) honestly i want to run my own studio one day, its my dream to own a small thing with a few of my friends with a fluid workflow and happy employees

This is really helpful information; thank you! I've been teaching and freelancing, and building up my portfolio for over ten years and this is helpful in envisioning a (slightly) bigger and more organized operation. I appreciate your channel!:)

Could you do a video on scaling your team? Or when/how to outsource your work? Thanks for all the videos.

Thanks for the suggestion. Great idea, I'll happily put together a video on the subject and explore it in detail for the KZbin Channel soon. In the mean time there's a short (2 minute) video on when and how to outsource to freelancers in the free mini-course here: learn.startastudio.com/p/free-studio-course One day... I hope to reshoot that free course.

Hi, I was wondering, what kind of projects were you working on as a studoo when you first started?
@StartAStudio
@StartAStudio 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Julaco. when I left my full-time job at a studio (which I'd been at for around 8 years) and focused solely on growing my own animation business (Stormy Studio). The initial projects were all business explainers, 1 - 3 min long business marketing videos, a mix of 2D and 3D. The first 2-3 months of projects were seriously super low budget as I was looking to quickly increase the amount of work in my portfolio and other areas of the studio website. Plus it gave me projects to share on social media. There were also a couple of KZbin channel idents. Most projects in the early days were won by pitching online. (Plus some local newspaper coverage of a 'new studio' lead to one project for a couple of thousand). I brought a remote freelancer on pretty early, to try and get used to sharing work, which took up pretty much all the profit. But freed me up a bit to keep adding work to the website and pitching for jobs. After 3-6 months, the rate I charged as a 'studio' went up a bit, meaning I could cover the costs of life and slowly invest back into the business... allowing me to eventually rent the first studio space, bring on more regular freelancer staff etc. etc. etc. Over the 7 years, we've moved studio space 3 times. It's now an established (but still) small studio. With a full-time team of 4, with 6 regular freelancers. Plus we bring on more freelance workers for projects on an Adhoc basis depending on demand and their skill set. The busiest we've been to date had 20 people working across projects. We currently have 12 projects on the go... which is a few more than I'd like. *Nowadays 95% of the work comes from people getting in contact with our studio. It's still mostly business marketing videos today, but the budgets are higher.

We are starting a small studio and we want to upload our animations on youtube, but we're struggling with our income. We don't know how to devide it among members. I searched the whole web but i could not find anything. There's also this new guy who says he can help us in developing our channel. He gives ideas about having multiple channels, None animation content etc. He gives promises that he can help us get rich soon or something. And he also wants a big part of the money we make. I don't actually trust him, but my friend (a friend of him introduced the guy) thinks he knows a lot. I appreciate Any help i could get.

Hey, thanks for commenting. Are you hoping to make the income from KZbin views (and related monetisation?). Or looking to produce content for clients? Splitting the money. It will depend on your approach. Who owns 'the company'. If you can work out the cost/% of the work for each person on a project that should help give some indication of how to split the income. If (now or in time) you register the business officially you can setup a business bank account so all income goes there. As for someone offering to help develop the channel. It's hard to say, but if you're not sure then you're probably thinking that for a reason. You can learn EVERYTHING you need to know about building, growing and monetising channels via KZbin videos, but of course if they're bringing real value to it, they deserve some fair financial reward. But KZbin success isn't guaranteed. Having multiple channels sounds fine in principle, but then that's a lot of content to produce. Perhaps have some meetings with them, learn more about what they're offering. What they'll require from you for it to be a success etc etc.. Good luck.

Hi, in terms of animation production, it will depend on the style of animation being produced. Though some typical ones that we use are:. ProCreate on iPad for sketching storyboards, Boords.com for arranging great-looking and easily updatable storyboards. Adobe Illustrator and or Photoshop for 2D asset design. Cinema 4D for 3D modelling, rigging, 3D animation, 3D VFX work. Adobe After Effects for all our projects whether it's making 2D motion graphics or character animation, we also use it for compositing 3D work and adding 2D motion graphics. Plus there's an array of plugins for Adobe After effects to expand the program for certain visuals, rigs etc. i.e. Element 3D, Plexus, StarDust and 100's more. We use Adobe Premiere for editing, balancing audio and final output. Plus Adobe Audition to record voiceovers. To manage productions and communicate with freelancers we use things like, Slack, MS Teams, Zoom, Boords.com, Dropbox. Plus Hubspot for managing client relationships.
