As it stands, this is a thorough explanation of how the world record time of the any% category of Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins was lowered over the years. But I feel like the midpoint of the video is you just saying "oh and then the time was lowered again", and without mentioning strategy changes I don't really have a solid grasp on why the time was lowered. The takeaway from this video that I see, is that it's mostly just subtle gameplay differences that aren't very apparent to the uninitiated viewer. There was maybe like two strategy changes that you mentioned and it got somewhat repetitive in the middle. Maybe spread out some juicy information about the strategies used throughout the video so people can better understand why the times were changed? I dunno.
@williamferguson85432 жыл бұрын
I enjoyed the video, and also agree that there’s some constructive criticism here. I would have liked some background information on why you need to visit certain zones in the game, why the any% category has 22 exits, and what strategies propelled runners forward. A mix of the personalities, records, and strategies is hard to balance, but maybe not all of the back and forth record taking was needed. That said, thanks for making the video and I’m inspired to try this game out (causally).

22:36 "Shorey-upiff"? I think the name is actually a reference to "shoryuken," which is (usually) a Street Fighter reference. So "Shoryupiff" would be pronounced "sho-ryu-piff," though "shor-yoo-piff" is probably close enough.

hey man! good video and i loved SML2 If i can add an opinion, I was really excited clicking on this video to learn about the changes in routes and how the speedrunning process progressed, but this video could have been much closer to 20-25 minutes. i don't think there was a need to go over every.. single... run.. whenever there was a new WR. The first 10 minutes were great, and then I kept skipping forward 2-5 minutes until the end before anything became interesting. Just my opinion but good work!

Please include people's back stories and what trials and tribulations they went through to make milestone achievements. I would like to know what were the difficult things they had to do to achieve their times and what things they did to accomplish them. A lot of this video is "this guy got this time, and then he beat it 2 days later by half a second, then a week later another guy beat it by half a second, and then came back to beat it by another half second! and then three days later someone else beat that by a half second, making it below X:Y0 for the first time. then a week later another guy beat it by a half second..." A missed opportunity was discussing the SML2 practice rom hack: what skills did it train, how did it work? can we get a demo of how it helped players? I got into this like a half hour, maybe 40 minutes?, and couldn't go on. Maybe the end is really juicy but I wouldn't know, if that's the case large amounts of this should have been cut. I say all this as someone who has been subbed since you had 1k subs. You clearly are putting a lot of work into this and there is clearly potential, which is why I subbed.

Alright, me being a proven runner of SML2, I have some things to talk about here: "adam's zone" when you were mentioning Mario Zone. lol Overall, the history showcase was really hitting home towards the last 15 minutes, but some portions of the WR timeline were missing something. That could be stemmed from a lack of overall game knowledge in earlier years, and the issue of Twitch VODs being prone to just being scrubbed on command and thus deleted VODs no longer have their highlights up, thus lost media forever. Lastly, a personal big pet peeve I have as of now watching this, and I am sorry if this comes off as personal...no mention of any strategies I have accidentally discovered due to irrelevance to WR history? At least you have thanked the community of SML2 runners, but time and time again, people like I have helped make dreams a reality. Lag reduction, the "primarily tool-assisted strat" and how it leans on borderline superhuman abilities, mainly. You listen to me, video game! You better come at the king, you'd best not miss! --AdamFerrari64
@Storster3 жыл бұрын
Hello. Thanks for the feedback. It's nothing personal if I missed any little details or anything, the video was already nearing an hour haha. You'd be correct about some parts being missing due to Twitch VODs being broken. 3 Records have either mostly if not fully broken VODs.

You said some runners ran this game on an emulator and it got me thinking, how would you even capture the video if you WEREN'T emulating it? Is it an actual piece of hardware they plug into an old Gameboy?
@Storster Жыл бұрын
There was a Super Game Boy add on made for the Super Nintendo. Tons of runners use the Japanese only Super Game Boy 2, which has proper game speeds. You’re allowed to convert your time if you use the original one.

@@Storster oh wow okay yeah I remember Super Gameboys, SNES taught me to read lol. Rad that it still has a place in the speedrunner's arsenal!

I enjoyed this video, but I feel like there are a few things that could be improved for your future videos. I know it's been a while since you made this one, but I think it's an effective illustration of a few issues you could clean up to make your videos more compelling. 1. Your phrasing is often a bit awkward or simply incorrect, particularly when transitioning from talking about one record to another. For example at 6:35 you say that Mugg's run was "yet from perfect" (rather than "far from perfect"); at 9:08 you say you won't "go down" the controversy of using emulators (rather than "go over"); at 10:18 you say that we may have noticed "how close the time was towards a new goal" ('to' would sound much better than 'towards'); at 12:12 you say that the phase "aligns up" (rather than "lines up"); around 12:20 you say "at the time" twice in the same sentence; and so on. I noticed a lot of these in the Mario Land 1 video as well. I know this sounds incredibly nitpicky, but the overall effect of having strange phrasing every few minutes is very distracting. It also calls attention to the fact that you're reading from a script, as these are generally errors that a person would make in writing rather than speaking conversationally; overall, the goal with this kind of video is to sound conversational even though it's prewritten. 2. I would have to echo previous comments that you sometimes don't examine what a run did differently from previous runs in enough detail to be interesting. Simply saying that a runner came back and was more/less sloppy in a particular section than the previous record isn't very compelling; if there's a long string of records like this, you could simply summarize them by saying that the record went back and forth while displaying all of the times together, and talk about common mistakes or new strategies within that group of records as a whole. 3. Finally, to return to the "sound conversational" point, varying your emphasis and pace while reading from the script to sound more like you're talking to the audience rather than, well, reading the script, would be more effective. It can be hard to listen to someone speaking consistently at exactly the same pace for a long time. You're far from the worst presenter I've ever heard, but it could be a bit spicier and more personal-feeling. I apologize in advance if these are largely issues you've fixed since this video since I am catching up on your more recent work, but I felt like this all needed to be said since overall I think your videos are fundamentally strong, just with a few weak points that you could address.
