Direct workshop comparison between two of my violins of different models, Stradivari G form and Guarneri Del Gesù form. Can you hear the difference?
The strings on both violins are Thomastik Vision Solo, the bow is made by Emilio Slaviero

Being almost deaf I can only appreciate the sound, both are great. To my ears the Guarneri is slightly more audible but doesen't mean it's better. I made an experiment comparing both tracks in graphic waves, it's interesting that the duration is different and also peaks of high and low are quite different. This just to say that the two instruments are performing different. At first sight I love both the violins, congratulations to the builder stunning instruments

I've always preferred the sound of a Guarneri, even if they're copies. This video doesn't change anything in my mind about that. I'd like that Guarneri model, but I fear I couldn't even afford a decent copy of a Guarneri, which this one definitely seems to be :-( . Lovely tone, warm and full of oomph. Back around the mid 1990s when I can finally afford a better sounding hi-fi set up, I've noticed that a number of classical records I've "inherited" from my uncle that were recorded during the 1970s had distant traffic noise which was inaudible on my previous "cheaper" set-up.

@DavideSora
@DavideSora Жыл бұрын
Grazie!

E String the Strad will always win but A D G the Guarneri beats any other violins on this planet.. It just sounds so much more well rounded, mellow and exact. This being said, the E string has always been a fetish for Violinists so I understand why the Strads are so much more known, after all the E string is what makes a violin not a viola. But if I had the money or the choice, I would ALWAYS choose a Guarneri Del Gesù. Tho I also prefer third/fourth position A over open E any day so yeah haha

Well, Guarneri is certainly no less revered than Stradivari, I'd say that they are on par in terms of popularity, and sales prices at auctions (for the originals, of course) prove it🙂 You're right about the edit, but I didn't want to make a real scientific comparison, which would make sense only by listening to violins played in real life, not on KZbin. Neither sounded like the copies I heard or both sounded similar, so I would say the maker has a bigger impact on sound and maybe the sound is of your own rather than Stradivari or Guarneri. At the lower note run near the end the Guarneri sounded fuller though and both are about the same on high or the edge is on Guarneri.
@DavideSora

Thanks for your comment and, well, I take that as a compliment. In fact, I am convinced that every luthier should look for his own sound, rather than trying to copy, which I think is a bit silly as I am convinced that it is not possible to reproduce the sound of a violin that is 200 or 300 years old in one that has just been born. In fact, even the best copies I've heard don't even come close to the originals. In reality, although similar, these two violins heard in real life are different, as all violins are from each other, but unfortunately, KZbin's audio compression is not ideal for showing the subtle nuances of a violin's sound that are so significant for the ear and sensations of a violinist.

@@wckoek You're right, the player was too gentle and delicate to explore all the possibilities of these violins, but I don't feel comfortable telling the musicians how to play, everyone has their own style and I like to respect it. @@wckoek I don't think that if I had to redesign an original model I would make it very different from the ones I use, and in any case, the outline is only a fairly marginal part in determining the sound (I use the 3 main forms of Stradivari, G, PG, and P, we have the original ones here at the museum). But for the most crucial aspects of the construction, I follow my personal principles, and the Cremonese construction method (inside form) that I use allows a lot of freedom of interpretation, even using the same form. So no need to design a personal model. For the Del Gesù model I use only one form, del Gesù himself used a maximum of two for his entire career and managed to make violins that were very different from each other. In any case I have made just a few violins on del Gesù form, my personal preference goes to Stradivari forms. Selling violins is difficult for young luthiers, fortunately (or unfortunately...) I have been working for so many years that I have no sales problems at all, to the point that at the moment I no longer take further new orders, my waiting list has become too long. But maybe it would be better to have more sales problems, but be younger.😅

I think they sound the same and not any better than a much cheaper violin like a di Matteo. They have done tests, It just physiological. If I could afford to buy a fiddle I would buy the Strad or Del Gesu because they are art, if I wanted a good violin to play I would just get a good violin and NO one would be able to tell the difference even though they think they can.

Different violins for playing different music in different places by different musicians. No use playing same music in same room. The room is too small for Guarnery, and violinist has not enough temper. IMHO

@user-mk4nr9te7p translated from Russian with Google Translate (sorry, I don't know Russian): "This tree with strings has few high overtones, so the sound is not sweet and few ultra low overtones, which interferes with flight. And the high ones stand out, which cannot be a miscalculation of the performance. Your weight and audiogram recording technologies produce results, but the sound is childish. And without possibility." My answer: Performance calculation error? I'm sorry, but there is no mathematical calculation to establish the performance of the violin, so I don't understand what you mean. Regarding the childish sound, well the violin had only been finished a few weeks when I did this test, so it is definitely like a newborn child, and as such with enormous potential yet to be discovered.😀

@DavideSora
@DavideSora 3 ай бұрын
I don't see how using vibrato can be considered a mistake, if so 99.9% of players make this mistake (I didn't write 100% because I assume you don't use vibrato🙂). Regarding the metal strings, the mistake is yours because they are synthetic strings (Vision Solo as I wrote in the video). Only the E string is steel, as 99.9% of modern violins use today, these are not violins with a baroque set-up. Do you use a gut E string?

@DavideSora
@DavideSora 3 ай бұрын
@@Recorder-e3e I know, but my violins are not baroque, and even all the original Stradivari or Guarneri have been modified (neck, fingerboard, bassbar, bridge, and the bow has also changed) to adapt to modern strings and be suitable to follow the musical evolution. Metal strings were only used for a short time, then technology developed synthetic strings which are much better, only the E string remained steel. In any case, it is a common belief that baroque string tensions (gut) had a lower tension than modern ones, but it is just a cliché that does not correspond to reality. The tension and also the tuning pitch were all over the place in baroque era, and at times could even be higher than today. Are you perhaps a baroque violinist who plays on philologically correct period instruments?

Baroque music requires proper violins, mine are not baroque violins. Furthermore, depending on the period being addressed, the strings also change following the string evolution (bare gut, gut treated with metal baths, bare or wound G, full wound or demì fileé strings, etc.). A shorter, non-solid ebony fingerboard, a thick, curved neck with a very thick, full heel to accommodate the three or four nails to attach it to the body, and to be able to use the proper left hand baroque technique, etc. etc. It's not just a matter of musical interpretation, graspig a baroque bow and doing little vibrato

At best, Korea, since the violinist is not Chinese, but Korean.😅 She is not a professional violinist, she was just passing by to try the violins, very kindly allowed the video to be used.
