I’m only 26 and I’ve had at least 20 jobs. I realize that I’ve been making work a place where I look for meaning, and tire as soon as it doesn’t offer that. I pray that the Lord purifies this disordered good & that I may offer up what I deem as “insignificant work.”

you can make meaning within any job, it is possible! i did it in retail by just being good to others around me and caring for strangers, or making the shelves look beautiful.

I struggled with the same issues for many years and never really enjoyed what I was doing. I also discovered that my ADHD played a huge role in my tendency to jump from job to job. My advice is to pray for God to place you in His will and to reflect on what you do best and what truly makes you happy, whatever that may be. The job I have now feels different-90% of the time, it doesn’t even feel like work. I love what I do. It’s fulfilling and, while it can be demanding at times, it pays the bills. Pray for God’s will in your life, and He will answer. God bless.

I especially appreciated the end when you talk about work as an act of worship when offered to God. As a seminarian, my "job" for now, my duty of the moment is to be formed and to study. This can be pretty tough sometimes because my call is not to be a seminarian, but I'm in an interim stage that is preparing me for my "career" as a priest. Sometimes, the only thing that gets me through a paper or a study session is the fact that I can offer it as a prayer to the Lord; that through self-denial and the exercise of my creative gifts, I can offer my papers, my exams and my studying as an act of worship to God. Hopefully other college students are turning their work into prayer as well!

I am a carpenter .. and it has been a grueling job for many year . sliced off fingers and broken hip.. blood is part of the job . scared of falling to my death but also seeing the divinity in what I do .. So many times I have stood back and cried .. I worried how I will make it the next week when injured and wondered why I was injured .. I would go to work and in my truck and pray .. I saw God in my work ! .. I would cry and get so excited when I'd see what I was able to do .. I felt The Lord and wondered why me .. Not why me in the sense of struggle .. But why me in .. Why did you give this Gift to me ? Things I couldn't figure beforehand .. I'd ask .. Show me .. and it happened .. I was witnessing like an observer and I'd get so excited .. I know my job might not pay that great .. I go to bed tired and wake up the next day excited and have never lacked food . I was provided for by God .. I was given an opportunity as a young man to build my parents house in 1986 .. I didn;t know what I was doing but it happened !! I hugged my mother in the back yard and told her " I didn't have a clue " and she said to me .. You have been given a Gift .. both of my parents passed in their beloved house years later .. and many years ago .. I understood the Gift and not only the work and toil .. But pass it on !! .. Show others what you know , teach and tell them they can do it and though they might not believe in God .. Testify always .. That it was Through The Lord unashamedly .. I will never take credit for all I have .. It was a Gift .. I will never curse God for the struggles ..I was taught through them and learned to love work and I see work as like a prayer .. I can give Glory to God through these hands .. .

If you would like to talk to him privately also, you could try emailing him. He was really prompt in replying to me. Something that has always been helpful for me is just sitting in Gods presence in the Chapel. If there is a Catholic church near you I would highly recommend going. I never really knew how to pray before so I just sat there with Him, sometimes I would just cry, and eventually I learned how to open up to Him. Weekday mass is always a wonderful blessing. (there's less people there so it wont be too intimidating) If you would like some reading material: "Rome sweet Home" by Dr Scott Hann is one of my favorites at the moment , as is Jennifer Fulwiler's "Something Other than God" . And , The Imitation of Christ. Lifeteen.com also has some great online resources- videos, blogs, articles; and could help you find a great faith community! And if you are in college: The Newman Center on your campus is probably gonna be your favorite place. I hope this is a little helpful to you! and I am praying for you, your family and your journey with God!

Father Mike made me realize my vocation, my calling. You heard it said to follow your passion or the gift/talent God gave you. And do smthg with that field. Perhaps. But Father Mike made me realize how I can make my job fulfilling my purpose here on earth for the Lord. To get a job to help the poor, needy, sick, imprisoned. And by devoting your job to ur Lord on a daily basis, you stay connected to the Lord through prayer, reflection thwarting off temptation, and disillusionment of mundane material life. You keep God close in everything you do! WALK DAILY WITH THE LORD. We are all brothers and sisters, and we need to help one another. Love, compassion, giving and all for the glory of the Lord. So doing a job just bc we're in the image of God, ok. But to do smthg everyday as a job that we're called down from heaven to do, THAT'S the best job there is! Thank you Father Mike for helping put God's plan before me! Keep up the brilliant Holy videos of wisdom!!

Beautiful! It seems right now, my 'work' is a life of prayer. I do plan on volunteering (other than street side praying in front of abortion facilities) and have started to inquire about that. Prayer does give me joy. It helps me pray for God's goodness to prevail, and God shields me from judging individuals, (though it is very difficult when even late term children who can live with help are left to die in agony, torn apart, or 'anesthetized' and killed --- and The Lord showed me it is all the same from the moment of conception for the conscious soul, known before the womb, with a natural ardent zealous emphatic will to live); I do pray for change of heart and mind. I pray for a greater voice for the Church, not just in words, but for their to be zeal throughout the Church to spread Good Counsel Homes and Sisters of Life to every parish. I can't understand the disconnect from Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, John Paul ii, Mother Teresa, John Cardinal O'Connor, and more. And those, no matter how high in station in the Church who champion this are relegated to a 'quiet' witness. God help us!

This and earlier videos on this topic have been helpful for me leaving college and working and now married. Very different outlook and helpful inisght. Its so true that we can have what we do or how much money we make define our dignity or value as a person. When really there is dignity in all work and we work to live and for liesure. Making a living is a good life, with dignity and truly is a blessing.

You're awesome Fr. Mike! I really appreciate all you do! Lots of great advice. I personally believe however, that your work should be what you love, and spending your time doing a job you dislike- even if it gets you paid and may be offered as a sacrifice/worship to God, I personally don't think you should be doing it. So much of life is spent at work- so it should be something we love to do. That is my personal opinion, and thank you for yours Fr. Mike. This is one of the VERY FEW things I disagree with you on.

8th grade: “It’s ok you don’t need to know just yet what our want to be” 9th grade: “Ok time to pick your courses for 10th grade that determine your 11th grade courses and subsequently your 12th grade and of course therefore your university degree and career”

Actually, you do not have to decide now.I focused mostly on foreign languages and english in high school, thinking I was going into law. On a whim I took up a programing class online now I'm a sophomore programming major on the dean's list. Learning the logic and the rules in language has helped me work through a lot of projects. While it seems intimidating to switch to something you have little experience, you benifit more by being a well rounded person.

I've been there! I didn't know, and I still don't know!😊 I took a year off then my mom encouraged me to attend College, I went, got my certificate and have been an Educational Assistant for 12+ years. Economy is slow right now, not so many jobs, but I know I am doing what God has developed my talents to do...in the moment.

Thank you, Fr. Mike. I was in need of advice in regards to my career that I've been doing for the past seven years. I asked God for what HE wants and not what I want and I felt that your words here was His answer/guidance to most, if not all, questions I had.

I was souring all day havent worked good for days. Belphegor got me under his foot., but Father Schmidt , you know... you got me father. I now connected how i wouldnt be right in Christ if i didnt work hard and kicked sloth aside. For as unleasant it may be to call 100 people a day and try to sell them something day in day out. It helps their business grow, helps my company feed thousands of families and most importantly it lets me live right in Christ and even imitate God the creator in dignity. God bless. and thank you

I am going into my final year in ME. After I graduate and get a job, I will apply for membership of ECEF (Engineering and Construction Evangelical Fellowship), so I can continue to use this platform to share my faith and gather with other Christians in the field.

Father Mike, I’ve been doing a random act of kindness every day of December, and I’ve received an award from my college for doing so, however despite doing this out of what I thought was selflessness, I still feel pride. I understand that God wants me to do something that I will love as a career and that the profession I choose must bring love to others. Yet I still feel pride of myself for spreading love and doing hard work? How do I make the work that I do pure in the eyes of God and myself? Thank you, the video as always was exceptional!

By remembering your ability to do said work comes from God and your desire to spread love is from God and even that you have faith in God is a gift from Him There is a difference between satisfaction from a job well done especially if it was a struggle for you and feeling boastful .

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it...

This was something that I was having trouble with in the last 12 months. I am currently a college student and it took me forever to decide that and I have switched my major already within my first semester and now I am thinking of changing it again, going to a different school, or even quitting college altogether. I have a lot of interests and I am so fixated on trying to pursue the career that is perfect for me. This talk really helped me understand what my parents were telling me before when they said, "You don't have to love your job or try to fit in to the perfect one." I still feel jittery about the discussion and am uncomfortable with my sense of work ethic and determination as well as commitment to a specific field. This video definitely helped even though I am still unsure if I should keep going (I am an accounting and finance major btw) because my grades are terrible and I have an idea of succeeding elsewhere. Maybe that is just part of my ego that I need to overcome.
