Agree. I saw a front axle on a Toyota get practically ripped off on the Rubicon. That’s not surprising given the trail. The impressive thing was that owner mended it with cables, ratchet straps, duct tape...you name it, and drove it out!

Good times, I did the Rubicon Trail for the first time 5 weeks ago. Took my 2016 JKU with 3.5" Terflex lift & 35s'. Bent my tie rod, smashed the steering stabilizer shock, and re-shaped the front half of the fuel tank skid plate. Not to shabby.

Went on that trail in 1966 in a Kaiser Jeep Universal CJ5, Buick V6, 3 speed, 4x4, 4:88 axles all stock. The Jeepers Jamboree did a good job feeding us. They still do it every year. Love that country which gets about 45 feet of snow each year.

I've been wanting to hit up the Jeepers Jamboree for quite a while now! One of these years I'll make it down there
@Garth20116 жыл бұрын
Back when I was there in 1966, they let dune buggies and other vehicle types in. That's all changed to strictly 4x4's and custom stuff needs to be inspected prior to the event. A real tough trail from my view, wouldn't want to be four wheel'n that trail solo. We're an hour and a half from King of the Hammers in Barstow, CA. Now that's where things change from a trail going someplace at the end to, competition only. Thanks for the recording.

You’ve never needed one tons and 40’s. I didn’t see old sluice but I wouldn’t do it on 33’s either. 35/37 it’s really not a hard trail at all. If they do fordyce in those, their winches are gonna come out 20 times each.

This is a great video. Having been across the Rubicon Trail many times it was good to see you guys having trouble in all the old familiar spots. As Lee Iacocca said in Rubicon Springs Camp when we initiated him to the trail, “This was a great day . . . and I have had a lot of great days”. And of course there is always Mark Smith’s cuss word reserved for newbie CEOs and Europeans, “Geturgodamnfootofftheclutch”. We had buttons made with that word. I went across that trail many times and always in stock Jeeps with stock tires, including 1 trip in a LWB Comanche. The TJ design was invented or proven on the Rubicon. But the oddest trip that I took was when we brought along a Geo Tracker. The only modification was a full belly pan added by the Jeep dealer in Reno. It made it but not before breaking one driver’s right thumb in 7 places. He said that he didn’t know that his thumb had “7 places”, but that was in Rubicon Springs after liberal amounts of Jack Daniels applied internally. We scrapped what was left of the Geo Tracker when we returned to Detroit. Finally the hardest trip was after the merger with Chrysler when somebody had the bright idea of bring along some Dakotas. I was driving the V-8 version, the other two were V-6s, when the common failure occurred with the right, outer half shaft U-joint failing. This occurred before the Little Sluice. It was decided to tow it into Rubicon Springs where we could fix it. We towed it with a YJ that Mark Smith and I had rescued from the scrappers using a tow strap. We towed it up the Little Sluice, across Loon Lake, down the Big Sluice (where it broke a tie rod end, then got a flat tire and then lost that tire) and finally through the car wash where the tireless RF got hung up on a rock and even a winch would not budge it. It was finally heaved off the rock by the Herculean efforts of our biggest engineers.

My XJ is feels pretty unstable with its 6inch long-arm and no front sway bar but it takes quite a bit to get it to the tipping point since all the heavy stuff is lower. I don't have a gage yet and haven't until I change the setup so its more stable with the added weight. I don't get crazy without a cage either and I know I will go harder when I get one.

Amazing footage, of a trail that is legendary, one thing I do before I go out 'trailing' as we call it, is buy a can of white lithium grease, and spray all the bushings,leaf spring ends, anywhere that moves/rubs, or shakes..because nothing gets it in there like during those moves, and hearing those squeaks and groans from some of the filming tells me why ;) also grease on your skid plates helps you slide past rocks. Catch them on sale at the big box store(read;menards) and it's only $1.99..besides, when you spray off the Jeep later on it leaves a nice lubricated finish under there..always a good idea! Our local stuff is only 1/10th of some of what that is though, and I too wonder why a autoparts place doesn't set up at the base, easy sales, and drone delivery! Yes am actually a Jeep owner, a pair of XJ's, a TJ, and a old CJ..and that's not counting my girls. Thanks for taking us along..although that end part..some things are better left unfilled on the trail, cold nights, dragon suits/small tents etc..!LOL

Awesome awesome video! I’ve been a long time fan of your channel sir. Thank you! I grew up in tahoe and it’s a shame I never had a rig capable of making it to the rubicon. As of recent, finally had the time and money to build a moderate trail/overland jeep. I Started building in March 2018 and I just got done building a 98 TJ/4.0 with 4 inch RC lift (the entry level version no long arm kit) 33 inch BF KO2s, no sway disconnects yet, unfortunately stock D30 (stock) and D35 (Dana 35chromolly shafts), 5 speed and 4.56 gear, RC “beefy” tie rod and track bar,I also installed front and rear Detroit trutracs, rock sliders, oil pan shield, steel diff covers, steering box shield and a winch. Does my rough county upgrades sound like I’ve been watching your channel way too much??!! Lol hehehe thanks for all that y’all do and how-to-videos! You think I’ll make it out of the Rubicon?! lol (With stock axles and truetracs)? I build almost week after week since March of 2018 but I’m never sure when if I’m ready! Man I even installed entire Air conditioning system from jeepair.com. Onboard 3.5gal water (from waterport), Cheap but capable portable air comprssor tsunami MF1040 (pep boys) I know it’s crazy! Lol But my justification is overlanding during the summer. As far as the Rubicon.....will I make it with my setup?? What am I missing other than actually getting the courage just to do it? Lol Thank you!
