"There's so much coming together." I think that was the real reason why Stranger Things blew up, the structure of the plot was efficient, lean, and impactful. Characters jumped to the right conclusions without undercutting the tension, the adults (involved) didn't discount the kids testimonies, and by now the season had a momentum that is rare to find in most TV shows. And as a pastiche of 80's Americana, the show hits all the right references yet still feels grounded enough to not feel like a hollow shell.
@jerodast6 ай бұрын
Yes! All this. I really think season 1 is a masterpiece of television. I feel like audiences get really obsessed with long story arcs and final seasons where years-long plot threads come together these days, and that can be fun, but a really tightly constructed story like this is just pinnacle quality to me.
@HerHollyness2 ай бұрын
100%. Season 1 is a masterpiece of storytelling. In my personal opinion, the following seasons have tried to follow the same structure but have not been as successful at it. They’re still good stories but you can see the flaws in each of Seasons 2, 3 and 4 in ways you just can’t in Season 1. Season 1 is absolutely flawless.

@@t3hi84n2g As an adult watching this, it's not frustrating to the point of me hating on this character. He came on strong at times which can be annoying but Lucas got a ton of straight up hate back when this first came out and in reaction videos since then. It was an excessive amount of hate which also impacted the actor's mental health at one point among other things like him being the only Black kid on this show. People have being trying to justify the hate since 2016, I just think it's refreshing to see reactors watch this while being patient with Lucas because it's not the norm.

@@t3hi84n2g Also the hate I'm talking about isn't the casual eye roll at something he said, people have gone as far as calling him an abuser and problematic while comparing him to characters from other shows who are literal bigots, murderers, and other awful types of people just because he was pig-headed here. It's also interesting how people received Lucas vs a character we will be seeing in a couple of episodes who is legally an adult and not dealing with a friend who is missing.

About the kid having a knife...It wasn't uncommon for a kid that age to have a pocketknife - especially boys. He just carried it around, and especially if going in the woods. Kids where I live still carry them - but of course not at school. They just happened upon Dustin and Mike. Not that he should've been bullying anyone. But, he didn't "come with a knife" specifically to get Mike and Dustin...he just had it on him and took advantage of the situation. That's the kind of person he is. (All of which speaks to bigger issues, but let's not get into that!)

Funny thing from Denmark, find it online too, sth these kids could have learned as well. There they have a system called 'forest kindergarten' which means that kg-aged kids have their daily sessions only outside all day, in the woods. Kids learn about nature, plants, animals, climbing trees, trekking through the bushes etc with controlled adult supervision. They even all get real knives and learn to carve sticks and wood safely - at kg age! All are healthy and happy, better prepared for school later. Once a horrified adult saw a kid climbing to the top of a tree and asked their adult carer if they ever get injured like this. "Yes, one kid went to a hospital once, when a careless parent backed over his foot with their car."

I see/get the point of your rant but let me explain why the villains pursue - in your own words 'dumb motives/goals’ in this and Korra. Also, why it's nuanced and not as black and white as y’all might think. If you think about it in the context of the real world - take stranger things for example, in the real world why did our govt pursue MK ultra, why was the Nuclear/atomic bomb created by Oppenheimer? For power, for control, for world domination. So, with that context, if the U.S. govt in stranger things can successfully harness the beings in that dimension or discover alternate energy sources/raw materials from that dimension they would gain more power and dominance in the world. To you, it's like what if it doesn't work out and goes bad for them (U.S. govt) it's a no brainer cause not pursuing such exhibitions because a new dimension is like the moon landing all over again, think of the endless possibilities of discovery also they would rather be the first to stamp the American flag on it than to be late to the party and Russia/Soviet Union is already there. Therefore, the fear of failing and things going bad is a lesser factor in the grand scheme of things. Anyway, This is just my 2cents and can't wait for more episode reactions. 🤗🤪
@jerodast6 ай бұрын
Also - it worked! They spied on the Russians! Why not keep pursuing it - until something goes really wrong. (On the other hand they were already testing her ability to kill animals, so...not cool, evil scientists.)

Be careful with y'alls headphone volume and hearing in general, I don't know how much it had to do with it but I used to have loud ass upstairs neighbors so I kept my headphones fairly loud then left that apartment and at the time I just had minor tinnitus but a few months later got some type of cold/flu/plague that pretty much killed me and a week into the month long 2 rounds of antibiotics plague I ruptured my left eardrum and now 6 months later I still have severe tinnitus and can't head fuck all out of my left ear half the time and I mean I grew up shooting guns and hunting and didn't have hearing protection a lot of the time and it never messed with me nearly as bad as the headphones or plague. Also when you rupture an eardrum its not even the pain or lack of hearing thats the issue its the constant fluid drainage out of your ear for weeks and complete loss of balance and coordination to the point of not being able to walk straight which continues for weeks and will randomly come back when you're driving which gets real sketchy and the literal auditory hallucinations which make you think even random stuff like a ceiling fan is talking or whatever and the lack of sleep because of it, all that really messes you up in every imaginable way.

Love your reviews! When Hopper talks about MK Ultra and LSD experiments it reminds me of our family lore. My dad's cousin, we called him Uncle, was in the military, supposedly in the CIA. In the 70's he dropped out of society and lived in Haight Ashbury, during the Hippie heyday. We wondered how he ended up there. The family legend from the 70's and 80's, way before X-files and Stranger Things, was that he was in the CIA and they did experiments on him, giving him LSD. It was the family story, don't know if it is true, but stuff like this makes wonder.

Some of the "not meant to go there" ideas remind me of nuclear research. Whether we meant to or not, we did, and it's created some good things, as well as some bad things the world had never seen before. To be fair to these guys, who would've thought that this new dimension they'd found a way to tap into just had straight up monsters inside haha. It's not like THAT happened when they split the atom!
@jerodast6 ай бұрын
And then of course there was the slim chance that the first atomic bomb would burn down the world. We did it anyway. It didn't. With these guys, there WAS no sign that psychic connections would open a permanent, evil gate to another dimension. But it did. They got unlucky...

In a way this is like if the first nuclear experiments led to Chernobyl. A for-now-localized but potentially apocalyptic containment failure that's killing people nearby and has the potential to be a danger to the whole world. But with phenomena that is not scientifically understood at all yet.
