I HIGHLY suggest watching the Keala Settle rehearsal (not really a rehearsal it was to get the green light for the movie) for This is Me. I absolutely sob every time I watch it. There's a magic that happens once in a blue moon when you're in an ensemble, when it isn't just technically perfect, the entire room feels the emotion during the performance. Like every breath you let out to sing is hot with feeling, but its in unison and the walls feel like they're going to burst. That was that performance.

Hugh Jackman doing From Now On the same day is equally great! It wasn’t a rehearsal , thiugh, it was the performance for the money men to get the film green-lit. So, even more important than just a rehearsal. Hugh wasn’t supposed to sing that day-he had just had a surgery on his nose with lots of stitches inside. But, he couldn’t help himself with From Now On, and his singing did end up with him bleeding.

Something ironic about the movie when it came out was that critics were bashing it for not being historically accurate and claiming it was a horrible movie for that reason, yet like 90% of audiences loved it, which is exactly what happened in the film
@peterlewis21783 ай бұрын
Most of the criticism I saw wasn't about it being historically inaccurate, it was more about the movie not having much plot substance and basically being a choreographed album with some plot thrown in. They also criticized it for trying to tell too many stories at once but not giving any of them the room to be fully realized, and for being a shallow feel-good spectacle. But I still think the point still stands. Critics didn't like it because it seemed flashy and fake and wasn't "art", but the people loved it because even if it was a little bit of a shallow feel-good spectacle, those feelings are still real. Just like the Circus in the movie.
@yuukinoyuki90643 ай бұрын
@@peterlewis2178 Really? Most of what I saw mirrored what OP said; critics furious that a biopic musical wasn't historically accurate. And even more incensed that it gave a positive spin to PT Barnum as a character without going into the more unsavory parts of his story. I probably would have respected their opinion more if it focused on film or musical composition rather than historical accuracy.

By today's standards, sure. But he was highly progressive for the day. And he played a huge role in helping get the national parks service off the ground, as well as unions, and was a major contributor to the original NY city power grid. I think you will find that like most figure in history, he was. . . Complicated
@melindamercier68113 ай бұрын
@@Strider91thank you! People love to only see through their own time period’s lenses. Those people were treated very poorly, but would’ve been treated as less than dirt out in society. There’s a reason side shows performers always joined the circus, it gave them family, it gave them the only place in the world where they’ve ever been “accepted” and are often times the only place where they could earn a living. And a number of Barnum’s performers have stated how they owe their lives to him, thats’s bc they understood the alternative out in world back then. Life ing general is far too broad to be black and white despite many of our actions along the way being so. He may have been a mostly terrible human being, but to suggest he had NO redeeming qualities is not only intellectually dishonest, it’s just a one-sided history.

He's complicated- especially by today's standards. He was problematic even by the standards then. He was also progressive. But as a myth, a legend - he's a great layered character. And let's face it if he was played by someone else, someone other than the intensely charismatic and fundamentaly likeable Hugh Jackman- people might see a character more like Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs of New York. This isn't a documentary, though. It's fantasy, escape, and spectacle.

I was rather amused when this came out and people were saying how historically inaccurate it was. One, it's a musical and you never goes for those for realism and two, you would expect a film about P.T. Barnum to be concerned about an entertaining show instead of reality. Hugh Jackman put it best when he said it's the kind of biopic Barnum would make about himself.
@RabbitsFunWorld3 ай бұрын
I never thought of it like that. I mean, I know not to expect musicals to ever be realistic, but even before I ever watched this movie, I knew P.T Barnum wasn’t the greatest person, but didn’t know how until a couple years ago. To think of the movie as an entertaining show that Barnum would want, and not what people want is a great way to approach the story as well as its choreography and music. 😊
@ItheauthorityI3 ай бұрын
I mean, it's more so how it is inaccurate. Like, what is with the smear campaign against Jenny Lind? If it were a biopic about how Barnum would tell his own story that should have been made clearer. There are interesting ways they could do that. If they have no interest in actually exploring the history behind Barnum, maybe they shouldn't have made the movie about him.
@Strider913 ай бұрын
And it honestly wasn't that inaccurate. It was definitely exaggerated, and modernized for current morals. But I'd highly recommend a deep dive into PT Barnum. Especially the role he played in creating the National Parks service and NY power grid. . .

I was driving with my dad the other day, playing this soundtrack, and my dad commented on how "it's everything you ever want" sounds unhealthy. For four years I went through steps with my kiddo(step) I was first babysitter, then godmom, and I've finally managed to get step mom in the last 2 years. Emotionally this song tore my heart out but also healed me in ways I didn't know. If you would like to watch another musical starring Hugh Jackman as the lead, I highly highly highly recommend Les Misérables. It's one of the most legendary musicals of all time, based on an even more legendary 19th century novel by the author of Hunchback of Notre Dame and has recieved every kind of adaptation known to man. Fans of the original stage musical have some qualms with the 2012 film but it's still overall a masterpiece and unfortunately there is no professional recording of the stage musical(outside of library archives that I hope to one day visit). If you enjoy the film version I would definitely recommend checking out one of the staged concerts afterwards(the 10th anniversary one has the best performances and seems to have loosest copyright but it also cuts out more stuff than some of the other staged concerts, including multiple scenes with my favorite character but I am salty about how she's portrayed in the movie as well lol, her personality feels too different in the film. the 2019 concert doesn't cut as much of her scenes but the copyright might be more difficult? Idk). I wouldn't recommend the concerts if you haven't seen the film though because the plot in the concerts is harder to follow(though I will again point to the 2019 one as the easiest to follow from what I've seen, even if nothing can compare to the performances in the 10 anniversary one)

I love this movie. In the theatre where I watched it, all of the crowd gave a standing ovation, for the movie! All through the credits. It was incredible.

This is the earliest I’ve ever been! I have to say: I found your channel maybe 3 months ago maybe less? This spring I went through a breakup of an almost 10 year relationship. I stumbled across your the fault in our stars reaction late one night when I couldn’t sleep. I’d already seen the movie when it first hit theaters years ago and I read the book before that in high school & was a huge John Green fan. So I already knew the plot and ending of the movie but figured I’d watch. That video, the first one I saw of you guys, kept me around. I didn’t realize that I was missing the joy and company of watching tv with someone else & hearing commentary and banter, after now basically doing everything alone. Anyway I’ve since gone back and watched a decent amount of your videos, even watching some things that I never in a million years would choose to watch on my own but because it was on your channel I chose to watch it. Your channel has become a part of my daily routine, sometimes even rewatching old ones just for the familiarity. As far as demographics go I’m 29 from the south / the east coast & have three older brothers that span in age from 32-41 but life has scattered us around the map. One brother that I was the closest with growing up, was and is really into wrestling & we share a love for horror movies, particularly the Halloween franchise (except the most recent batch)- we’re not as close anymore for no particular reason but hearing some references you guys make or random callbacks makes me feel close to him. I have no idea how your channel got recommended to me that random lonely night, but I’m so happy it did.

I went to see this on opening day with my grandpa…we’re movie buddies, we go see almost everything together in theaters if one of us has something they want to see…and the second we got out, I went and bought tickets for myself for the next two shows. He didn’t want to sit there for another few hours, so we just went to the library and hung out for awhile before he dropped me off at the theater again and he went home.

This one was on my wishlist for you guys to react to, so yay! Next on my wishlist is Chicago or Hairspray. I love them both! Hairspray has Zac Efron, Michelle Pfeiffer, John Travolta, Christopher Walken, Queen Latifah, Amanda Bynes, and Brittany Snow. Probably others that I am forgetting, too. Chicago has Renee Zelweger, Catherine Zeta Jone, Queen Larifah, and Richard Gere, and more.

I knew the songs from this film before watching it, and when I watched it, it made me like this film even more

I always love your reactions, I would LOVE to see you guys react to Hairspray and Les Misérables as they are phenomenal as well. Hairspray is a very uplifting musical as well and was amazing, whereas Les Mis is a tragic musical with very heartfelt songs and stories. I love watching you guys and was so happy you did this one! Keep up the great work ❤

This movie is absolutely superb, watching it once you have kids is a totally different experience than before you have them. Watching your kids growing up and being there for them should be your priority and make you happy, if it doesn’t then you need to take a long hard look at yourself. Money is nothing compared to your children’s love.

It was announced by Disney at the D23 convention on August 9, 2024 that there are plans to make a Broadway Stage version of The Greatest Showman. There were no dates stated at the time.

Oh my god I am so hyped for this one!! This is such a huge comfort movie for me, I saw it in theaters with my dad and his girlfriend on Christmas eve and had most of the songs memorized within like a day. So good! When you guys said you were kinda wanting to dip into musicals I was really hoping this one would be on the list somewhere!! Also I am so with Oak singing along to the entire movie 😂😂 The part where Zendaya is shown in "This Is Me" and she looks right at Zac saying "I'm not scared, to be seen. I make no apologies, this is me." has gotta be my favorite part. She put so much passion and intent and meaning into that short part, and Zac's reaction was perfect. Also a couple of fun facts, the little girl who plays the oldest daughter is a dancer in real life! Also the bartender in the "The Other Side" sequence is actually the choreographer for that number! That's why everything was so precise and perfected! They rehearsed it a ton! And in "Rewrite the Stars," Zac and Zendaya did a lot of their own stunts, and you can find clips online of them falling and struggling through the rehearsals, but man was that hard work wroth it because that whole sequence is just amazing!! Edit: Mason Quinn your speech at the end calling out the 25 year olds who aren't where they wanna be and telling us to relax and take it easy hit so close to home, thank you so much, from a 25 year old who has been spiraling the past few weeks literally because I'm not where I wanna be in life 😂😂😂 Okay sorry for such a long comment bye!

I just love the fact that when you first see The Oak you have a completely different impression of who he is as a person and it's always a little delightful to see his opinions and the kind of person he is.

This is one of my comfort movies. Like Oak said it was soooo fun in theaters. I even tuned out the fact it was making Barnum a wholesome good guy. Around that time it became a personal tradition that I watched it on every flight I took until it eventually was phased out of the in-flight systems.

OMG! Listening to the Oak at the end made me cry. My thoughts went back to the time when I was in elementary school, people picked on me for wearing glasses. Thank you for saying that Oak.

I had THE most magical cinematic experience, seeing this movie for the first time. It was on the top deck of a cruise ship, on the big screen over one of the pools, and just as it was reaching its climactic musical number, "From Now On", our ship was just steaming out of port at sunset, and the Seattle skyline was slowly moving in the background! ("We will come back home, home again!"~) 😊 Was completely blown away by that one singular moment in time!

Great reaction! I love all your in-depth discussions, you guys always touch on some great points. 2 things: first, I think Jenny Lind has one of the most overlooked lines in the movie which really encapsulates the lesson that Barnum's character learns. When she announces that she's going to quit the tour because P.T. is only in it for the money and is using her as "another one of his little acts," she tells him, "when you're careless with other people you bring ruin upon yourself." I've always thought it was one of the best lines in the film. In my interpretation, it can also be read as a little nod to the flawed character of the real-life P.T. Barnum and a caution against his methods for seeking success. Second, if you want to do more musicals, Newsies is another great one! The film version is on Disney Plus. It focuses on the 1899 newsboys' strike in NYC and has some great musical numbers.

😳Oh my God I'm so excited to watch your reaction to this amazing show! 🥰 The songs are exquisite and the acting is superb. Here we go... **Okay I just finished the reaction that I have to say this is one of my absolute favorite ones from you guys! ❤ I've seen this show a dozen times and I own the soundtrack DVD and I can't get enough of the music etc so I am so very pleased that you all loved it so much. It brought tears to my eyes like it always does... but not as much as when The Oak was expressing his deepest thoughts about the show and the charities that he helps. You guys are all terrific and I love watching this channel, but The Oak is one very special man.❤
