Will was robbed of his childhood by being captured and trapped in the Upside Down. The other boys have moved on and are ready to become teenagers but he doesn't feel that way. It's actually very relatable for a lot of people.

I really don't think it was a big ask on Will's behalf to play D&D with his friends. He lost so much of his childhood when he was either possessed or in the upside down, it's pretty reasonable he wants to catch up on what he missed out on.

BAN_ The_ Fox yes but I think it’s lazy to think that Hopper was representing toxic masculinity. Yes, he wanted to date Joyce but he was also her friend and even as friends it’s not cool to stand someone up. Grace is right that there should have been consequences for that. Also, I totally get his relationship with el. He has already lost one daughter. I’m sure it’s killing him to feel like he’s losing another. No one likes to see their kids grow up.

Not to mention the fact that by being the Dungeon Master he has the ability to have some control over his life and surroundings, and also to face his trauma in an empowering way by projecting it as the enemies in the campaign. I wanted Will to get more like El. That the connection between him and the Mind Flayer had done someting to give him powers as well. Or someting like that. But instead I felt he was just used all the time. Noah Schnapp did an amazing job with the Material given to him, but it felt a little lost
@DLxxx

Honestly, nothing but wasted potential for that character this season. And it doesn't help that 95% of what he was given was touching his neck and alerting people about obvious danger. Not much Noah could do with that to make it interesting (not to mention the one good moment he had didn't get any resolution).
@KaiInMotion

I think it was a great season for Will, but don't worry, you'll probably get this in season 4. He and Eleven will be living together in a new environment and will probably become close friends and genuinely see each other as siblings. He could also easily develop more powers or abilities over time. Maybe he'll help her do something or hatch a scheme to spike or wake up hers and it will infuse him with power as well. They actually gave him a great starting point this season to develop Will and who he is. If anything the first season was worse for his character and he was more of a symbol or object for other characters to work off as motivation than a person in his own right. Now we get to see his actual emotions and how his relationships with his friend have been frayed because of his trauma. I thought I was pretty cool. I'm hoping season four really focuses on powers and Eleven's other siblings start coming around looking for her.

I disagree on your comments on Will, of course he still wants to play DnD, he's been suffering for 2 seasons from the mind flayer, a huge part of his childhood was taken from him. i think his reaction was justified, but i dont blame the other kids for not understanding him. sometimes u have to be in their situation to really understand whats going on. Also please acknowledge his acting capability as well, i think with what he's given, he gave a spectacular performance. I think a lot of people are misinterpreting that scene with Will, especially with the subtext of him possibly being gay; it wasn't actually about D&D at all, he was watching Lucas and especially Finn get farther and farther away from him all Summer because they started dating girls. On top of it, not being able to date a boy in that era himself or even being able to mention it, on top of the status of the "abducted kid" and the "Mind Flayer's puppet" thing (I think he's had a crush on Finn for a while now, which is why it was Finn in particular that sent him over the edge) he was basically using D&D as a metaphor for what he really wanted to say. Him subsequently destroying his fort, and tearing up the pictures in particular, is, I feel, to demonstrate how lonely and disconnected he feels from the other three, which were for the most part together in the previous seasons while he was off the scene or on the antagonist's side. It was very nuanced writing, perhaps too nuanced.

I don’t think it was just that they were dating girls that was bothering Will, it was that they were acting like early season one Steve level d-bags. Their behavior also pissed off their girlfriends and Dustin. Will just happened to be around them the most. He was also still going through PTSD after the first two seasons and him wanting to play D&D was his way of coping. His friends didn’t notice that he needed help like they would have in past seasons.

Because I've been in this same situation as a young teen, not really interested in relationships and would rather hang out with my friends, who were all going into relationships and slowly parting ways. Will is just not ready to grow up. And him going through so much trauma and ptsd, it made him lose about 2 years of his childhood, so it makes sense that he would be behind mentally.

As a child of the 80s, Robin is VERY important. Back then you needed a safe underground network of friends in the "community" to be around when you come out. IF Will is gay, Robin will be part of his extended network and can guide him. The 1980s was VERY different. Coming out to a friend was a very big deal. Also, Will... He was traumatized and like him, I was a little slower developing my dating skills. I very much identified with him not being ready to grow up. Just my 2 cents.

Red Lundr Toxic Agreed. Toxic masculinity is a real thing. But the problem with throwing that term around every time a man acts gruff or has an ego (which is to say he has character flaws) takes away from us cheering for someone to grow. Characters have faults. But when a protagonist (or someone in real life) is evolving we should be supporting them not trashing them. It’s an oversimplified reaction instead of appreciating the complexity of the character. Otherwise, if we can’t write characters like this, then what is the idea? To write cardboard cutouts of what an ideal man is supposed to be for every role? A lot of men are abused and and have trauma and struggle to deal with it. But it’s the ones that are trying to deal with it that we should help - not shut down. If we do not want toxic masculinity, then shouldn’t we also try to help men that we recognize who actually have a good heart? If we want any kind of change change, we also have to enlighten people. Or at least those we think can be reached.

A lot of people can relate to the feeling that your friends are leaving you behind, and seeing him deal with his trauma and come into a stronger version of himself was great. He was willing to help fight the mind flayer and put himself in the line of danger again after everything he's already been through. It was a great season for Will and sets him up for a better one next year, now that Eleven is his foster sister. I honestly hope we have a time jump before season 4.

I’m tired of cries of “toxic masculinity” in stories which are mid-point in completion. What kind of stories are we supposed to have involving boys and men if they come out as perfect people in episode 1? It makes no sense. Hopper’s storyline is his growth. We’re not going to appreciate a happier more gentle guy unless we see some not so pleasant things. Evan Rachel Wood has no room to talk as her character in Westworld often drifts into stereotypical tropes too!

I loved loved LOVED Steve's and Robin's story arc here and the fact that it didnt go all cheesy at the end. I like how all the teens are getting great storylines showing life has bumps in the road and it is not all smooth in the teen romance department. In a show with Demogorgons and Mind Flayers no less! I think Mike was ok, he is a teenager and he is SUPPOSED not to know how to approach the situation with Hopper, just like Hopper even if he knows what he gotta do, he doesn't necessarily get it right. It's quite realistic. And I think Will was supposed to portray the kind of guy who didn't actually picture the future and is kinda taken aback by not being able to keep up with his friends. I love the characters, I actually thought the last episode was kinda slow and was getting a bit cheesy, but I think S3>S2. It's more memorable. But I do think they could have done a little better with Billy and the Mind Flayer, it was like a bit whatever, let's move back to the good characters now. And it was a bit unrealistic in the action scenes, took me out a few times (Nancy, Steve and Jonathan couldn't have survived for sure...)

I don’t think Billy is dead. There was two of him in The Upside Down and I think the real one is still trapped in there. At least that’s my theory haha.

HonestlyKyle good catch. That would be great! If that happens I’m so giving you creds for it!

Billy Cain I agree with you but I just get to damn attached to characters and want them back!🤦🏻‍♀️ I’m up for any resurrecting of Billy even though I know it would kind of ruin the whole sacrifice.

I completely disagree with your argument that Robin takes away from Steve- if anything, I think she challenged him and gave him a lot of development.

@Jughem Hemjug I disagree, if anything I think her character got better as the season progressed and as she interacted with the other characters. But it's all a matter of opinion I suppose..

The character building really stagnated this season. The core group, Will, Lucas, Dustin, Will, Nancy, Jonathan and Steve, really didn't see any noticeable growth from beginning to end. This is what I missed and it felt like they sacrificed substance for spectacle.

I did not like that Eleven still cannot speak proper English. It's still super choppy and not fluid, but then randomly it seems some lines were perfect English.

The fact she can't speak proper English without it being sloppy isn't weird in itself if you think about the fact she literally grew up in a stone box until 3years ago. But yeah, there sometimes was a sentence she could speak English. I did notice it was that it was with things she hadn't heard before, she had trouble with. Like with the boyfriend conversation with Max and them listening on the boys.

@@leonielovemusic I agree, time wise it would make sense that she was not able to speak clearly all the time, but it didn't feel that different from where she was in season 2. I still love the character and Season 3.

I agree with ALMOST everything, but I don’t think Will being unreasonable was detracting from his character. I think it’s kind of cool that they represented the one late bloomer friend that every group has. He just wasn’t growing up quite as fast and wasn’t ready to let go of childhood things yet. Throw in the potential complexity of sexual identity on top of being a late bloomer, I think it sets up quite an arc for him going forward!

Totally agree with your thoughts about Steve. I was so worried about him. He is my favorite. Wanted him to have a great arc, but was a little bit disappointed in the end.
