What would you do when you think no one is watching? What Would You Do? (WWYD?) explores the varying answers with the help of hidden cameras capturing individuals who have been placed within seemingly everyday situation that quickly go awry. The individuals on this hidden camera show are forced to make tough calls when directly faced with situations of racism, violence, hate crimes, and other hot button cultural issues. Catch John Quinones reporting on these individuals as they make split-second decisions to intervene or mind their own business. WWYD? airs Friday nights at 9|8c on ABC.

@@poppyflower7873 lmao, first of all, it’s not only old people I’m referring to. I never said that. Second of all, saying thank you but I’d prefer to be alone right now should not be insulting to anybody. In most cases the person is gonna be grateful someone offered to sit with them and if you’re one of the rare situations where someone doesn’t want that, then you literally just have to say no thanks. It sounds like you have your own issues you need to work out if someone caring about you would spoil your entire day

I was raised between two cultures: Japanese and Native American. Respecting and helping our Elders is such a huge part of both cultures. I was terrified of talking to anyone when I was little. But, my mom just wouldn't have any of it. So, I would have been at Stu's table immediately, talked his ear off, taken his number and address so I could drop of food and "visit" with him and washed his car. Maybe that's why my house is a mess!

I was there... I didn't help the old man eating alone, he helped me. Not at a restaurant, but at a park near my house. I'm 30 and live in Germany and back in corona times, I was on unpaid leave for over half a year, my girlfriend lost her job, she had to go back live with her parents. My mother was in hospital and I couldn't fly back home because of the restrictions... I started heavily drinking. In an effort to control my drinking, I would walk in the park near where I live and then sit on a bench, alone and watch the river. Contemplating. An elderly man greeted me everytime he saw me and one time, he sat down next to me and we started talking. Guy was 97 years old and a WWII veteran. He was also alone, his wife had died, buried a son, only family he had was his daughter, living in Spain. So we hung out and it was tremendous. He was a very kind, generous and intelligent man. He really had seen it all. Yet, he still had a smile on his face and a desire for life. I learned some stuff about life from that old vet. We had even invited each other a few times during corona, back when "social gatherings" were forbidden. He told me war stories, how Germany was rebuilt after the war, etc. I mostly told him about tech news and the history of Bulgaria, my home country. Sadly I haven't heard anything of him since late 2021. I learned from neighbors he had been admitted into an old folks home, but that's it. No address, no details. So Sgt. H.Kessler, thank you for the good conversations and I hope you found peace! You helped me in my time of need, even when you were almost 100 years old!

I've actually done this with an elderly man at Applebee's... He was sittin alone and I felt so bad for him because he just seemed lost and sad so I took my plate of food and my drink and asked if he minded me sitting down with him to have my lunch and he replied "well of course not have a seat" and as we began talking I discovered that it was his and his wife's 67th anniversary and she had just passed a month before but he wanted to come to Applebee's anyway because it was where they always had their anniversary dinner... We talked for a couple hours while we ate and he told me stories about the past like how him and his wife had met, their first house, their children, what times were like back then etc.. By the time we finished talking I went to pay for my meal and he said "this ones on me" and I replied "no sir I appreciate the offer but that's not why I sat down with you" and he then said "I know but I insist, I've enjoyed the company on this day and you just so happened to of ordered my wife's favorite appetizer (which was mozzarella sticks), please let me pay for this one so I did and with that we said goodbye and I haven't seen the elderly man since then but I often find myself wondering about him and how he's doing or if he's gone on to be with his wife Gwendolyn!!!🕊🙏🏼🕊

Does anyone else just feel a strong sense of sadness when seeing an elder sitting alone? I'm not exactly the emotional type but when I see older people being lonely I just feel so sad. About 10 years ago my daughter and I were having lunch in a little cafe in Maine. She was probably 15 or 16 - we spotted an elderly man sitting alone and she could not take her eyes off of him because she felt he was lonely. She finally spoke to him and they had a sweet conversation back and forth for about 20 minutes. As we were leaving, he took her hand and said "You're a beautiful girl, inside and out....Mom, you should be proud". We will never forget it. That little gesture made both his day and my daughter's.

BALONEY!!!!!!! I'm an elderly woman, and I would be quite angry if someone wanted to join me in a restaurant just because I "look lonely"! I very much enjoy eating out alone, and I hate being interrupted by strangers at all. I've lost both of my children, have no grandchildren, but have many very good friends, most of whom are younger enough than me to be my children, had they lived this long. Yet I live a good life, I drive myself everywhere, I have a sweet little apartment I like very much, and on very rare occasions, I go out to eat at my favorite little café near my home. It would absolutely ruin my meal if someone felt I "needed" their company just because they saw an elderly woman sitting there alone. People should never automatically assume that someone sitting alone is lonely, and nobody should have to answer the question "Would you like some company?" from a stranger! Not in this wacko society today, thank you!

It still warms my heart to this day. If it’s your grandparents or not, talk with them. Elders are just pure joy

One time I was on the bus and struck up a conversation with an elderly gentlemen about baseball. Based on his facial expressions I think it was the first time in a long time he had someone to talk to about his favorite sport. He was so happy to talk about his favorite older players and was thrilled that I knew who most of them were. Sadly I had to get off the bus before he did, but to shake his hand and see him smile was a memory I'll never forget. It was the sweetest, most beautiful conversation I ever had with a stranger.

There was a 104yo regular at a restaurant I worked at as a cook... and she outlived her husband (both of them), her three sons, all her close family members, and all her friends. Totally alone and went for coffee just so she could talk to someone. So sad.

In the row in front of us, there was an old woman sitting all by herself. We didn't say anything to her at first, but before the movie started, she turned around and started talking to us. She told us about her son and said that he was currently living in a different state with her grandkids. Apparently he took them to see the movie recently, so she went to see it for herself because she wanted to have something to talk with them about. But no one lived with her at the moment so she had to go alone. We ended up sitting with her for the whole movie and watched it together. She was so sweet

This warms my heart. My grandmas friend who was like our grandpa growing up had no children or living family or friends aside from my grandmother, because his wife who he met when he was 8 and married at 17 died during labor with their first child at 20 - and he was too devastated by losing them both that he never remarried. Once she passed he had nobody but us who lived two states away. He would spend holidays at KFC when we couldn’t visit him. He spent every birthday that we couldn’t spend with him there, he just loved KFC. For his last birthday before he suddenly passed, the team at KFC who cane to know him very well three him a surprise birthday party. They all got him gifts, his favorite cake, and gifts. They even got in contact with a few friends from the church he attended to come. (Small North Carolina town) He cried happy tears telling us all about his party. He said he felt like a kid again. He passed three months later. Thank you to all the kind people that love on the Elderly.

This second woman is amazing! Not saying the others werent but for her to invite the guy to meet other people is sometimes really what a person needs. It can be very hard to go and and try new things. Especially at a older age. And because of that sometimes you need a women like her to ‘hold your hand’ and do it. Just amazing!!

In most Asian countries, elder people/parents are one of our priorities.I'm from the Philippines, specifically. Some Western countries may criticize us for being too dependent on our families, but one thing we love about our way of life is our elders/old parents don't die alone and lonely.Daughters and sons make sure we provide financial and moral support for our elders as much as possible. We dont want them to die in a home for the aged centers. We want them at home with us and feeling home if their time comes.

I know it is your culture, but referring to people as "our elders" is highly offensive to independent-thinking, free spirits like myself..... very demeaning. I worked in a hospital setting, here in USA, and witnessed nurses calling patients "mama"......yuk! It is fine to offer help to family members, when they become dependent on assistance, but not because they are "old". This is Ageism at its worst. Treat people as individuals and equals.

It's funny. I am now a senior. I have no immediate family left. Serious mobility issues. I was more outgoing than now. People seem to have gotten so nasty recently. I am now hesitant with people I don't know. I have hired a couple to sometimes help with things around the house from a move. I moved a year ago and still have boxes I haven't unpacked. They are young, from South America. They are so sweet. They seem to have become fond of me. I even look at them with suspicion!

@@tannerteevsb8963 Um, being an introvert does not mean you like staying inside, lol. Where do you get that from? That's a hermit not an introvert. I'm an introvert and out most of the day....I'm doing my own thing alone but I'm out, I couldn't stand being cooped up. Introversion is about the level of interpersonal interaction you can tolerate and under what circumstance, not about physical isolation indoors. It's also not about not getting attached to others. If you stay in and stay online to avoid getting attached you have other issues, not introversion.
