Fighting back tears reading this. My dad lost his dad at exactly 11 years old as well. My dad said they were so close and he was his everything. Unfortunately my dad did not give my brother and I the same relationship and bond and chose alcohol over us and it has affected my entire life. My siblings and I were raised by a single father. My dad took me shopping for a prom dress, taught me how to walk in heels, talks to me about boy problems and even bought me my first training bra. So I give him that, he did alot so I could have what I have now. I always had a bit of resentment but now I understand fully. My dad is a stay at home dad. He worked nightshift for 10 years at a grueling factory while raising me and my sister to support my mom's dreams through college, and after everything she works her dream job and is making enough that my dad no longer needs to work! 5-6 years ago he was able to quit and raise my (now 5) year old sister while my mom worked. My parents love each other a lot and honestly stay at home dad's deserve upmost respect because it's the same as stay at home moms! My dad is amazing and he does everything for our family at home, my parents have it very even and I can tell they wouldn't want to trade it for the world. I also know a family who kind of falls into this category. The dad does have another job, but he has a very small farm, so he's at home the entire time. The mum works in the city in a well-paid job. This is extra great in my opinion: Not only is the dad there for his kids 24/7, they also have gotten to know how a farm works and lived in contact with animals and nature from day one. Seems like a pretty amazing childhood to me.

My dad retired at 50 when I started university and my mom continued to work (and still does). Having my dad home full time has made our home more balanced, and stable. He is so dependable and the rock of our family! Whenever a child gets more time with dad than usual, it’s a great thing. I am now in my 30s and I can say that I have a healthy and realistic outlook on men because of my dad’s constant presence at home :)

@Owen Cadavos I think it is sometimes harder for Dads being the parent who takes on the home responsibilities because it can be more isolating as there are not as many of you and you dont always get the same support from other stay at home mums networks...often because people are afraid of gossip if they look like they are too friendly with a stay at home Dad. It can be quite lonely I imagine. Unfortunately, being a stay at home parent means no one ever tells you you are doing a good job, and that's no different if you are a woman. As a woman, especially a single mother, the world just wants to say you are useless and your children will be a disaster. You have to find the resilience and confidence in yourself that you know you do a good job, you have good priorities, you love your kids, discipline them when needed and take care of them and their home. A man does what he needs to and takes the responsibilities that are best for the overall wellbeing of his whole family and it sounds to me that is exactly what you are doing. Do not let small minded fools get to you one bit...you need to stop caring what others think and care about what you think and your children need from you...and that is being the parent at home looking after their needs. That's a man. I wish you all the best and hope that you remember that what children value, whether you are the parent working at home or the parent working outside the home, is that you love them and are interested in them as people and give them the best attention you can give them whatever long or short time that is available to you.

I can't undo the past but I can learn from my fathers mistakes and I think how we handle our problems is what defines us as people. I hope to make a difference in the world and change it for the better, even if others may call my generation childish and unrealistic, all we want is a change for the better and I know we'll make this a reality. I dont regret my past, and yes its hard, sometimes all I wish for was a loving dad because of how heavily it still affects me today, but I will overcome it just like I did him. I want to be a role model for others and show even if you have 19 years of heavy abuse and trauma you can overcome it and be happy. There's so many children in the world with parents who are unkind to them, or don't even have any. One good, loving and supportive parent is better than none. I'm so close with my dad. My mom traveled for work and my dad was at home, he worked(mostly from home) and went to school. Even when my mom stopped traveling you don't get that time back. Being an active, positive part of your children’s lives goes so much further than financially providing for them. as a girl who was raised by a single dad, this hits close to home. my dad would braid my hair before school, he'd cook dinner for us every evening, he would paint my fingernails for me(he actually did my right hand for me a few days ago lol). stay at home dads and single dads are so underrated. they love the child just as much as any mother would, sometimes even more in cases where the mother is abusive. AND being a primary caregiver for a young child is a tough job, so not only do stay at home dads deserve respect, but so do stay at home moms.

I think gender isn't a defining factor of parenthood. Why? My parents both work and my mom was only good for cleaning the house, when I was 10 I started cleaning it, and now she's just here in this house to complain. My father despite his mental illness cooked at lunch, showed me how to handle bureaucracy, took care of minor repairing jobs and taught me, took care of bills too. My mom couldn't even braid my hair, I literally watched a KZbin video because she didn't know how to, and never cared to learn.

When our kids were little, I worked and my husband stayed home with them. We really didn't want them in daycare and I just happened to make more. Him and our kids loved it. He is such a great father to our kiddos. The women around us had questions and the men were just miserable. They always treated him like he was less than a man because he took care of the kids. This hit hard for me. My significant other gets depressed staying home and watching the kids because of past trauma she has. I had to sacrifice my dream career and trade roles with her. I am now staying home and watching the kids and get great satisfaction out of it but see how it gets overwhelming. Raised as a only child to a single mother. I've always wanted a Family and that which I did not have a Father. Now is my chance to be the father I never had. Regularly my Mother shames me like this and it breaks my heart. Some people just don't understand.
