What a trip down memory lane. Lived with my family in Basel back in 2005. We always used the tram and regional rail systems, never cars. Even though I was only 11 I would often hop on the trams to explore all the routes on my own. I memorized many of the routes. I think fondly about visiting the more rural areas on the outskirts of the city.

Funny - I’ve just filmed and uploaded a video of the tramway Basel, too ! It’s a great system. I’ve appreciated it a lot.

Earlier this year, in fact, 16th February, I rode tram line 3, all the way from Birsfelden Hard BL to Saint Louis SNCF station. It stops by three schools and the Casino Supermarche at St. Louis Soleil, before terminating at Saint Louis. I've not actually been on the line 8 that goes to Weil am Rhein past Weil am Rhein Grenze, but in April 2001 I walked along part of the general route of it to Weil am Rhein at the location of the Dreiländerbrücke stop. I would be interested to see the line 3 between Spalentor and Universität. My hotel was along that section, and at nights, construction to replace the tracks was going on well into the night, between 10 PM and 2 AM, so it was hard to really sleep properly. I am hoping to go back again this February, just before Fasnacht.

If I see the trams here one following another and imagine all the people sitting in them driving a car, it really makes me realize how lucky people living in Basel are with their tram system. Otherwise they would be all stuck in their self made traffic.

This nearly used to be like this between Canada and the US before 9/11.... 😕 Not with a tram but with seamless border crossings.

Basel has an urban area of up to 850.000 inhabitants which spans across Germany, France and 4 cantons in Switzerland. The 175.000 inhabitants is only the municipality of Basel which corresponds to the core of the "actual" city and urban area. Additionally the size of trams isn't only dependent on the size of the city but also on politcs and their role in the transit system. Basel has a small and underdeveloped S-Bahn system compared to Freiburg and in the suburbs some tram lines have an S-Bahn character, thus some trams are pretty long.

The interiors of those new trams look stylish, but laminated wood seats? 🤨

these seats are so comfortable btw

@@tcklx I'd say they divide opinion. I like them too but have friends who don't. They are nearly always clean as they're easy to keep that way. If they're not you see it instantly, no hidden muck in the cushion.

Meterspur.
@helilebon23832 жыл бұрын
@@librarian16 Ja.
@gerrit-jannap87922 жыл бұрын
