Note: It took me about three quarters of play to remember that when the "Control" portion of the card says "RG pass to any player for position shot (flip next card)" that the next result comes directly from the offensive player card of the receiver of the pass and that the "Passing" column of the passing player was not used in this instance. Other than that, I think I played the game reasonably close to what the instructions tell us. Cheers! 🏀

Strat Basketball is a very good game and gets even better when playing the super advanced.
@redfanrod10 ай бұрын
Strat Advanced has enough complexity for me. I'm pretty sure there's not that much of a difference between Advanced and Super Advanced. Maybe something to do with the "choice of shot" in those "****I" shooting ratings. I'm no expert at this game, so I'll probably look more closely at the super advanced rules of the game down the road. Have a good one. 🏀

@@redfanrod New subscriber. Those stars can be used with the advanced version because they were on my original 1974-75 set. The stars represent the player's tendency for shooting, the more stars, the more he penetrates. When the shooter has the ball, you would roll 1 die. If the roll is higher than the number of stars, then he shoots from outside. If the roll is equal to or lower than the number of stars, then he penetrates. The "I", of course, would mean that the shooter can shoot inside shots.
@redfanrod8 ай бұрын
This comment is golden, Captain Carl. Welcome to the group. I'm a bit worried than an extra die roll on each possession might slightly disrupt the flow of the game but it's probably worth it so I'm not making the decision to shoot an "Outside" shot, make a "Penetration" move or put it up from the "Inside." Have a good one, Captain Carl. 🏀

@@redfanrod I have a couple of versions of Strat's hockey game, including their first edition that had the 1977-78 NHL season, as well and other than the original C&D version, they also have stars on them for that reason. I think that the stars allow the players to perform closer to the same style that they did when they were on the court. Dean "The Dream" Meminger was more of a driving to the hoop player than shooting from outside and "Dollar" Bill Bradley was just the opposite.

Love it Rod. I only have strat for football but I've been eyeing the basketball game for about a yr. I like it a lot but I just don't know if or when I'd get it on the table since I'm so wrapped up in Bank shot and SSG Basketball. Keep up the great work. I like watching these while I'm up early with the baby and making breakfast.

Cool to hear your story, What-if-games. I have no clue about Strat Football as my sports growing up were basketball and baseball. Having said that, APBA was/is my baseball choice and Fast Break (by Mickey Games) was my hoops choice. Hal Richman at Strat has done a decent job at keeping Strat sports in the public eye for 60 years. I think the basketball game is detailed with decent flow. I bought Strat baseball for the first time in 2021 but only played a couple of games. It was fun but I have too much basketball game plays on my schedule. Thanks for the praise. Cheers. 🏀

I've played an inordinate amount of Advanced Strat Basketball over the decades, and I can vouch for the fact that you're fine using their rebounding methods. They work.
@redfanrod10 ай бұрын
Thanks for the input, Guy. I just used the "Rebounding Missed Free Throws" chart from Fast Break to simplify the rebound results on missed FTs. At all other times I used the regular rebounding methods. Strat's rebound look-ups (with tiny "4 point" fonts on player cards and FACs) generally take too much time for me. Therefore, I made this small shortcut. As a Strat fan, did you enjoy the video overall? I know I still need work on my Strat skills. 😀 Have a good one, Guy. 🏀
@guykipp290510 ай бұрын
@@redfanrod Yes, loving the video. If I recall, on free throw rebounds in Strat, you raise the # of each defensive rebounder by 2, and reduce the rebound # of each offensive player by 2. And you can't fastbreak off a defensive rebound after a foul shot.

Thanks for the praise. I'm not a huge Strat guy but I appreciate the work that goes into the individual player and team defensive cards. Much like Replay, Strat takes a lot of brain power to broadcast. I will do more, however, following few other tabletop hoops projects. Have a good one. 🏀

Very interesting to see Strat-O-Matic basketball. I saw Buck Williams play quite a times at Continental Arena at the Meadowlands in the 1980's. Tickets were really cheap, the parking was free, and the arena was a few miles from my house. Trivia- The Nets drafted Buck Williams at #3 and Albert King (Bernard's brother) at #10 in the 1981 NBA draft. Why was this strange? They both played forward at Maryland for 3 years. Then they played together for the Nets for the next 6 years.
@redfanrod10 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comments, yankeesandgiants. Portland fans loved Buck Williams, especially after being able to unload the "elephant in the room" known as Sam Bowie. Glad Bowie had a couple of decent and injury-free years with the Nets. Albert was just a gamer, too, but never had the pure "take it to the rack" skills of his amazing brother in Bernard. Strat is an interesting game. I respect the detail of the cards but it has a different flow than games like Fast Break, Statis Pro of that era. Have a good one. 🏀

Wow, a fellow 1980s Nets fan. My father and I had a half-season plan for Nets games for several years in the Buck Williams/Otis Birdsong days. We were there, courtside, when the Nets won their 10th game in a row to beat the Lakers in Jan. 1983. Good times.

Great times. I'm actually a Knick fan but I liked the Nets too. They were in the ABA until 1976 so I rooted for both. Dr. J., Larry Kenon, Billy Paultz, Super John Williamson. John Sterling of NY Yankee broadcasting fame was their radio announcer when I was teenager. Channel 9 showed both Knicks and Nets games in the 70's before we had cable TV and ESPN.

You keep stats for your games? Do you have a season stats worksheet or excel? Been looking to find a program that keeps my season stats. Any info is appreciated

Good stuff. I really wish SOM would reissue classic seasons for C&D. It’s a great product. They do it for football. Basketball is much easier and quicker to play. **Also: how did you pull cards from the computer game for 1966? I would buy the computer version just to print cards off the game.
@captaincarl82308 ай бұрын
I do too. I had both the 1971-72 and 1974-75 sets, which are dice driven (no FACs) and the only way to play those seasons is with the computer game. I mostly use the computer game to divide up the playing time for the players when playing C&D. I also let the players shoot the F(1) free throw and not worry about the number of fouls. Who wants to play the game only to see the star players keep getting into foul trouble. Not me. That ruins the fun of playing the game.

Strat is a good game. I was actually raised on Fast Break by Mickey Games, so Strat is new to my gaming closet (although I briefly played Strat in 1988 after Fast Break went out of business). Still have a lot to learn. As your second question, a man named Derek D'Stache who is on the Facebook Group "Strat-o-Matic Basketball Players and Fans" took his 1965-66 computerized Strat and manually entered them onto the player cards. He said it was a painstaking process. If you're on Facebook (or know someone who is) you should good to my "Tabletop Basketball Board Games" page. There are manually entered seasons for 69-70 NBA and 74-75 ABA and 84-85 NBA available in PDF format within the "Files" section. Have a good one. 🏀

I believe that if you get a black dot position shot reading, the player does not have the option to penetrate. If he's positioned outside he must take an outside shot (not an OPEN shot), and if he is positioned inside, he can only take an inside shot.
@redfanrod9 ай бұрын
I truly appreciate the feedback, Guy. I just looked up the rule in section 12.0 of the Strat instructions. Under "Position Shot (with dot)," it says "If he is positioned outside, he may shoot a (guarded, not open) three-pointer, an Outside Shot or Penetrate." Is it any different in Super Advanced Strat? I still consider myself a novice at Strat Pro Basketball. Have a good one. 🏀

Black Dot next to a "Position Shot" indicates that if the shot is good, no assist will be awarded.

At the end, you asked if you can fast break off the rebound. I believe you can off a missed shot as long as it’s not a team rebound.
