This is a great insight into the mind of a man who actually earns his money from the game. It proves that even major winners will completely remove all ego from their shot / club selection and look at the desired result as an end game. I could listen to this guy talk strategy all day long.

It's a great reinforcement to hear about playing the percentages; e.g., playing for the middle of the green. Clive's comments about wind direction were very insightful, as I generally check the weather forecast but seldom note the wind direction in the forecast.

I can say with confidence that anybody above a 2 handicap would improve their scoring average if they played every shot outside 70 yards to the centre of the green. The hardest part is blocking the flagstick out of your vision and committing 100% to your target. That's the reason golfers score better without flagsticks (and that experiment has been done before- Scott Fawcett has done it with several US college teams and even those elite amateurs score better without pins).

Great video. Most mid-handicappers could shave strokes just by thinking a bit more during the round. One big tip I picked up is to block out the "danger" spots, to avoid the double bogies. Also, gauging your shots based on the BACK yardage to the green instead of the middle of the green. Lots of tips here that seem like common sense if you just think about them!

Great 3-part video series! Thanks for confirmation of my use of a ''wind map." Had not thought about considering cloud movement direction; thought they were too high to be accurate.

Always good to review these basics. I need to think more about the max distance I can get from a club, so not to go long, then maybe back off a bit to get less.

I use my ears as wind sensors. I face the breeze then turn my head until I feel equal breeze on both ears. Then I know the direction of the wind. It takes no time, and I don't slow up play at all. Try it. Throwing grass clippings in the air or licking your finger and holding it up are both time consuming hogwash practices. When the breeze feels the same on both ears you know the direction it is coming from. Occums Razor states that the simplest solution to a problem is usually correct. I hope whoever reads this has a great round next time out. I love golf. I truly do.

Knowing how far you actually hit the ball and what are the relevant yardages for particular shots is really important (front/carry, back, pin, roll out). I have been using a range finder the last couple of seasons and through trial and error have become much better at club selection. I was recently fitted for wedges and the fitter used a launch monitor (which I had never used before) and I found that my actual carry distance is less than I thought. This is no surprise but this knowledge really helped my 1 game since the fitting. Driving ranges are starting to get launch monitors in for public use in my area and they have cell phone apps which work with the monitor via bluetooth to load the data from your session.

I ordered a FlightScope Mevo+ to take to the range for practice sessions and to get my carry distances. I plan on making a chart with my yardages for each club for each shot type then laminating it and putting it on my bag. Same for wedges for 1/4, 1/3, 1/2 shots as well. The bad thing is that due to the Rona, I have to wait a few more months for it to arrive.

.Years ago I was told that if you want to find the safest place on any green to watch the golfers, it's always at the back of the green, because they all under club.Still true today.

So what is the strategy for par 3 holes Hit 7 instead of 8 and hit putt close. Repeat on all par 3s. 203 yd.par 3 Hit 155 yds and chip. 2 putts = 4 for 2 points.

Hi Neil. One for another day maybe. Why do you and all other golf coaches just before approaching the ball, lean to the right?!? Your two eyes are central, your head is central, surely a square stance and a square look is better for focussing? Watch the pros do it. 👍🏻

I actually admire the humility of leaving it in instead of editing it out for ego"s sake. Hell it's happened to Tiger. I can trust a person like that.

Neil’s pre shot routine for putting is strange. Both times he did his practice swings between his feet and the ball and then didn’t move his feet closer for the actual putt. Just reached further out with the putter so the setup is different. Never seen anyone else do that.

Best way to play a par 3. Hit ball on green. 1 putt. If not 2 putt.

Get it safely on the green...then three putt for a bogey? I'd rather go for the pin...if I make it I have a birdie putt. If I miss, I scramble for par... These guys took birdie completely out of play and made par look impossible.

I enjoy you videos but this one was terrible. "Try this. I doesn't work. But if it had worked it would be great advise. But it wasn't and that's ok. I'll give you another terrible tip next hole and if that doesn't work well next video". It was a waist of time.

Nice vids but stop talking about average handicapers. Average handicaper do not have single digits. NO AVERAGE HANDICAPER will hit 203 yards into the par 3 green (same for 385 yards on par 4) as this is achievable only by DRIVER (or 3 wood if they will be long hitters) and dispersion for this shot will be over 30 yards wide. I think that I am average golfer but ppl like you just raise their ego to tell us that we are bellow average if we cannot hit 168 yards on to the green with 8 iron. :(

Strategy on par 3: Hit it on the green in one. 2 putt. Walk to next hole. Didn’t think the literal simplest hole in golf required a 20 minute video.
