Definitely want to hear your final thoughts! There are a few Ren songs that hit like this, for different reasons. But there's also a flip side to Ren, where he can be lighthearted, funny, upbeat and uplifting (Losing It, Love Music 1-4, What You Want (homage to Beastie Boys), Humble, Loco, Power). There's a Ren for every season and every mood. Thanks for this great reaction. Your tears at the end got me teary-eyed as well. 😢

The Tales are hard to watch - but so important. My mother lived a less horrific version of Violet's life. I lived Jenny's childhood. But instead of meeting a Stevie, i got lucky and met my future husband when i was 17. We have been married almost 40 years now, and have 5 grown children & 3 little grandsons. I was determined to break the cycle of poverty, addiction & violence and feel so very fortunate that with my husband's help and support, i succeeded

I am truly sorry with how much that affected you. It must hit very differently for you both. It might be useful to browse through the comments. You will find a number of people in there who are too familiar with this. Hi Ren and Jenny and Screech were the beginning of the Renegades, a community that is built on looking out for each other, where people can open up about their pain, and where people find ways of supporting each other while embarking on really changing their lives. There are two or three really challenging ones left in Ren's work, and a lot of deep beauty, social commentary, and glorious silliness, among all sorts of else. Glad I found you.

Just some info.. Ren came up with the original tale of "Jenny" after reading an article in a news paper about the murder of a prostitute in London by a young lad, someone commented in the article "It's such a shame", which is why it is so prominent in the song. Violet died in 2005, the tale of "Jenny" was released in 2019, which is why Screech and Jenny are 14 years old n the song. Jenny was 14 years old and walking the streets of London in high heels indicating she was a "working" girl ("she'd walked these streets 1000 times before"). Screech got his nickname from being "quick on his feet", "screech" being the sound trainers make as you dodge and run on an indoor training court. "The blade that could slice concrete" was actual a line in a tv advertisement in the 80's/90's IRC on late night shopping channels. When Screech tries to meet up with his girlfriend and she tells him she's busy, she was busy (cough cough) being with Patrick (Ren confirmed this) The tales are a generational story of abuse and the victims of abuse, Jenny much like her mother kept quiet and accepted her fate in silence and resignation, Screech was reactionary and quick to anger just like his father. What many people fail to understand is that Screech although the "obvious" bad guy in the tales, he was only 14, he had been brought up in foster care or an orphanage, he was obviously not being given the help/support/discipline he needed at that age in that situation, and from the moment he fatefully turned the corner and met Jenny face to face everything he did was fear, adrenaline fueled reactions to a situation that rapidly spiralled out of his control... Suffice to say, Screech was the bad guy, but he was also a victim as well, and I think that, that is the whole point of the story Ren tries to get across "It's such a shame".

Actually you can match the dates, when she moved out and she was pregnant for 9 months... In the comments of the videos on ren's channel you should be able to find all the details! Everybody talk about Ren, but I think we should speak about him AND Samuel. He represents a huge part of his success. Money Game part 3 is just incredible and the reaction are priceless. Btw, you can find funny mash up of reactions!

As a boy-girl twin myself, it’s so fun and moving to watch you two. So in sync! Twin Sense! I was really touched by your emotional reaction at the end-I really get it. I can only imagine if my brother had killed me due to us being separated early on (we also had an extremely rough upbringing, but I managed to keep us together through extreme suffering on my end). So fucking tough. I felt your tears in the way that people who are not twins would not understand. We took care of each other from the truest origin, and continue to do so in adulthood. Yes it’s recorded live, and each video is a one-take camera shot. They’re both 14, it just sounds like 40 due to the UK accent.

I have seen probably dozens of reactions to this, and yours was the only one that got me emotional. Your reaction to the end of Violet's Tale brought me back to when Dimebag Darrell was shot dead onstage years ago. It was devastating that my favorite metal guitarist was killed by some psycho while performing, but what really killed me was that his brother was the drummer and witnessed the whole thing from a few feet away. I have a slightly younger brother, and I broke down for months every time I thought about that situation. Much love to you guys. You are, after only two reactions, quickly becoming one of my favorite reaction channels when it comes to Ren. I'll add that I've been into metal pretty much my whole life, but after seeing Hi Ren this time last year, I'm obsessed. This guy's talent and ability to pour his soul out knows no bounds. Truly a generational talent and someone the world needs to hear and embrace. I look forward to seeing your reactions to his art. You'll be mesmerized, cry, laugh, bop and everything in between.

Same here my friend, same here. Dimebag's death was a massive blow to the metal world and resonated not just with the band and other bands - but also the worldwide fanbase. You'll know about the song "In This River" by BLS then? Artists like Ren only come along once in a lifetime imo, and, when they do - you need to sit up and pay attention.

I've seen quite a few reactions to this trilogy. This one is really insightful. The proof is in your reaction to the last minute or so. And you're right - this trilogy can be (and has been) the jumping off point for so much discussion, exploration, and (if people allow it) healing. I'm a little older - I remember Rod Serling and Alfred Hitchcock fondly, and always thought of them as storytelling masters who know how to bring an ending you didn't see coming. At the end of this video, I immediately put Ren in this same small class. In fact, he is the next level of master storyteller with his musicality, his creativity in instruments/special effects, and his videography. Now that I think of it, even the locations where he filmed are probably more intentional than we realize. Thank you!
@passio-735
@passio-735 2 ай бұрын
I think he works [or worked] the other way around. These videos were made on a veeeery small budget - Let's take Violet's Tale: he uses a children's hospital bed here because there was some mix up and they had to put it on a small pedestal to fit his size when he stands up and for the camera to work the ankle properly [that's actually why he sits with his knees drawn up in that scene - which looks so much better then what he probably initially planned ^^]. The beginning was filmed at a friends house and the street was just the street outside that friend's house. So it's not like he was looking for the perfect building to film the staircase scene in etc but that he [and Sam!] took what was there and made it fit the lyrics perfectly. But of course he puts a lot of thought into the type of place he wants that story to be set beforehand [as with Genesis etc.]. I do sometimes wonder about the graffiti on the wall though XD Maybe some of that was added on purpose but having been to London a couple of times it really might have been a coincidence as well.

Ren is Welsh. Everything is rehearsed. This was a live take, one shot. It was numerous takes to get the right one. I dont know if there is a behind the scenes. When you think of this type of music I think of Bards from medieval times that would go around and sing stories with instruments.

This was another very enjoyable reaction. This trilogy is another example of Ren's genius and a master's class in storytelling; he truly is a modern-day bard. I heard it likened to a Shakespearean tragedy many times. Ren created a backstory on the characters involved on Instagram, hinting that Patrick wasn't home because he was with Screech's girlfriend when Screech called her. This is a masterpiece of a tragedy. I would also recommend you check out Ren's collaborations with Chinchilla, "Chalk Outlines," "How to Be Me," and their busking sessions in Brighton. As for "Chalk Outlines," it is one of my favorite songs right now; it is beautiful yet sad and really showcases Ren's beautiful singing voice. Looking forward to more Ren reactions from you. God bless. For those who might have missed the implication of this trilogy, here is a quick summary. Violet's tale takes place in 2005 ("two-zero-zero-five"). She was sexually abused by her father, and her mother was an alcoholic. Violet subsequently ended up in an abusive relationship with a boy named “Stevie” which resulted in her death. Jenny and Screech (James) are the twins born to Violet 14 years earlier, likely separated at birth by social services. Fourteen years later (2019, when the first two parts were released), Jenny and Screech end up face to face on that fateful night, unaware that they are twin brother and sister. Screech tries to mug Jenny and ends up, unbeknownst to him, killing his twin sister. Screech flees and goes looking for his friend Patrick unsuccessfully, he tries to call his girlfriend to seek refuge, but she says no, before confronting and getting shot by police officer Richard one street over from where Jenny lies dead. Ren provided a backstory on the characters involved on Instagram, hinting that Patrick wasn't home because he was with Screech's girlfriend when Screech called her. This is a masterpiece of a tragedy.

Try not to talk over the guitar parts. They're some of the best parts of the entire piece. Though his lyricism is off the charts. There's always more to music than lyrics alone. :) Btw, have you listened to any of his rap tracks yet? I think you'll love them. He can genuinely rap like a rap god! :) However, it's his singing that I really love! You're in for a treat there too! Ren's lyricism is so much fun to dig into because you don't ever really have to make up anything on your own. In so many songs he tells you directly what other songs he takes influence from - it's like leaving a quotation in a science paper. And if you are unfamiliar with rap or pop culture that can _really_ lead you down a rabbit hole. One that doesn't lead to more Ren music but to music from all over the globe in multiple genres, their origins, politics, (changing) meaning in society and so on. The first time I heard him I was a bit put off by that fact because I thought it wouldn't be necessary to spell everything out but the thing is: if he wouldn't do that I would have only seen and heard in the lyrics what I already know and this way I can really dive into it and see what _he_ is actually coming from. It's also pretty tongue in cheek because instead of fighting off people who believe that certain types of music should only be produced by certain types of people (because of that music's cultural background or political origin for example) he just straight out tells you: Hey - I'm using this. I got inspired by that sound, by that story etc. And even though my story isn't their story there are parallels in our shared human existence. It's also funny that people call him a modern day Shakespeare (he actually includes that in a few of his songs) because he does write music like early modern playwrights who didn't have to bother about copyright or plagiarism - just get inspired by plays/music from the past that people already know (and love), adapt them to modern times and twist them around until it's equally part educational and entertaining/profitable and do that in artificial verse. I haven't met another artist in the past decade who knew how to do that quite as well as Ren. Now after this block of text that probably no-one will read anyway: I would suggest reacting to "Seven Sins" next. It's the album opener for _Sick Boi_ and a very good way to start with the songs from that album which is much more rap/hip-hop based. Have a good time and thanks for taking us with you on the journey!

@@BVeronica100 we are 2 ! But my advice is to continue with his amazing storytelling skills and react to Money Game 1,2,3. If I prefer the music/rythme of the part 1 & 2, the video in the part 3 is so creative...I heard he received a prize recently about it. By the way, the work of Samuel is incredible and a huge part of his success.

Great reaction, and remember it's always ok to cry and be emotional, watching Ren, you'll get used to having your emotions brought out whether you want them to be or not. May I suggest reacting to his song Suicide - BUT only after you've at least listened to "For Joe" and "How to be me" (it'll make sense in the end, trust me) and you may want to have tissues handy for that rollercoaster.

I swear man the storytelling in this trilogy is freaking amazing. Maybe it's cuz I also like Ren's music/acting (voice).... SO much to take in with this brilliant Shakespearean tragedy. I get frustrated with some reactions when it's missed how he describes Jenny....why would a 14 year old be walking the same street a 1000 times, in high heel shoes? Almost no one seems to catch that. Also, for "Screech's Tale", it seems that almost no one catches that Screech's girlfriend and his friend Patrick, happen to be "busy", or not available, at the same time. Consider why. Maybe they were together? Patrick wasn't home...was he with Screech's girl at her place and that's why she was "busy"? It adds a whole other layer to the story. Also consider that Jenny and Screech were born side by side, and essentially died side by side, one street apart. Born on the same day (2005), died on the same day (2019). An entire family, mother and twins that never knew each other, wiped out by a cycle of violence. An abused mother, a 14 year old prostitute, and a 14 year old thug/murderer. There's sheer brilliance in the line "please let my baby stay alive"....at this point you don't yet know that it's twins, but "baby" followed by "stay" can also be read as "babies" because the S in "stay" isn't necessarily separate from "baby". Say it out loud- you'll understand what I mean. Such a clever way to hide the twist reveal while still giving it up at the same time...if you can catch it. Brilliant.Powerful stuff. In "Violet's Tale", the way he uses the acoustics of his environment to accentuate the song is absolute brilliance too....and btw, Ren is self taught on the guitar. Just one of many instruments he plays including drums, bass, & piano.The man is truly special. A prodigy. From what I understand, he wrote the first 2 songs after reading an article about a very young man murdering a young woman in London, he didn't write "Violet's Tale" until a few years later and that one was of his own making. He said that there are 2 songs so far that he wrote, that he knew in his gut were special. "Hi Ren" (of course) and "Violet's Tale". (He was right on both counts imo.)

I've always been wondering what the obsession with this is amongst Ren fans? [sorry that you got to be the person I'm asking now ^^'] It's just mentioned so often and I think it's the one completely dull and unnecessary trivia about this song/story. The important fact is that both people he could turn to are unavailable at the moment, why that is is completely irrelevant. So what if they are meeting behind his back? They are probably also 14ish and we have just learned that Screetch has "something more sinister in mind" which makes us question what he would have done to his girlfriend if she hadn't been busy [Ren actually plays this perfectly. Although he had just been knocking on his pal's door in panic for a very long time and he is still shaky pulling out his cell phone his voice is super chill when he first talks to his girlfriend like nothing had happened - that type of chill nonchalant voice you really get to fear in violent people]. Imagine: If you were 14 and you have this 14 year old friend who you are or are not yet romantically involved with but he's having extreme mood swings and acting aggressive towards you and then there is another guy who might be the same or maybe he is nicer in some way...just thinking about 14 year olds "meeting behind someone else's back" in that way is kind of ridiculous. You are usually not in a serious, committed relationship at 14 and if you are under those circumstances there is nothing about that fact that sounds healthy. But taken all that aside and coming back to the storytelling: The reason doesn't matter because Screech doesn't know. He does not have a crisis of feeling betrayed by his friend and girlfriend, he is having a crisis of being abandoned in a moment of panic and need which then stokes his "it's me - alone - against the world" attitude as he's running towards that police officer [who had no chance of knowing who he is or what he had done and probably wouldn't have looked at him twice otherwise] - it's a reaction of abandonment and fear, not anger, which makes that trivia unnecessary to me].

@@passio-735But I want to add: you're right that this isn't important for Screech at that moment and he is just full of despair and under a lot of pressure (even more when you see the additional stuff from the IG stories) in his last scene.

It may be somewhere in the comments.. but Ren wrote this after seeing an article about generational abuse, and as a result - often death. The article stood out to him bc the writer, or someone they interviewed said “it’s such a shame”.. you’ll recall he said that at the end of Jenny and Screech’s videos. He’s an amazing story teller… but please check out some of his lighter stuff too; his busking duets with Sam Tomkins are great, as are him with his band The Big Push!!

It shows Ren's genius as a story teller and shows his compassion (he composed a musical tragic story to honor the memory of people whose lives are tragically ended). I believe he points out in his "Eden" video how our current system is lacking and that mankind should exercise their gift of Free Will and turn this hell on earth into a better place.

Guys no need to apologise! This is the best and most perceptive reaction I have seen to this and I get how hard it hit you both especially being twins. It took me a while before I could re-visit it after the first time as it is such a tough story to hear. Now I can appreciate a lot of the details that your amazing 'twinsense' picked up on straight away! His wordplay/poetry is so clever without being pretentious and making it difficult to follow, instead, like you said, he paints clear pictures in your head. There's so much to take in and appreciate - the locations, the accoustics, the background noises, the camera work and the acting (scarily realistic), all fantastic. There are a couple of details I think could have been improved but given it's live I'm not going to dwell on them. The observation of him being like a medieval English minstrel was spot on and the upbeat (almost jolly) guitar playing is a very clever (or cruel?) ploy to get you in a positive mindset before revealing the ever darker tales. Each tale starts like that to take your mind off the terrible event that has just happened before dragging you back into the darkness again. Violet's tale was added a couple of years later and it elevates the piece to a whole new level. I really admire the way he tells such an uncomfortable story that few of us want to hear in an honest and non-judgemental way. If anyone makes it this far thanks and peace to you.

I am fortunate enough to not have suffered such a hard childhood myself but my partner who I have been with now many years has suffered an abusive childhood from her father and although she is strong I can see how much it has affected her life. What I will say for anyone who has a loved one who is going through or has gone through something similar is be there for them when needed but also give them the space they need when needed.
