What I love about this scene is that it does so much to highlight how utterly outclassed the crew is, not just for the New World but for their ideals. It's not just that they can't win this fight - Luffy clocked that quickly and order the retreat. It's that they're not even strong enough to run away from the fight. A fight that they picked. Hurting a Celestial Dragon summons an Admiral and we all said, "f that, punch him Luffy!" But this arc shows, that for all that he declared war on the World Government, Luffy simply isn't strong enough at this point to say, "screw the consequences." And it's half luck that they aren't all dead.

@@ZarathosDaimaoh yes, also Zoro and Luffy keep losing to not only Nami, but Ussop, and even Chopper!! I’m rewatching fishman island right now and those two get pummeled for being short sighted so many times for not thinking about how they would rupture the bubble coating if they take out their pursuers. What I feel is so wholesome is that it’s the “weak trio” that can express their grievances thru violence with no repercussions. The monsters “allow this”. It’s to the point that Chopper keeps saying things like, “ do that again and I’ll kill you!!” Which is hilarious given the power level difference. I do idealize this type of masculinity, on a darker note, it is sad (both ways) where women will be so confident of no repercussions that they will batter their partners. And conversely, when this happens, some men can’t take it anymore and retaliate. Both are undeniably “domestic violence” and shouldn’t happen. Who knows, in 100 years maybe “One Piece” won’t have aged well with all of Nami’s resolution thru violence, but to me “slight violence” can still be a love language. (In my defense, I only had brothers and we all grew up reading Jump every week)

even if you know in a meta way that theres no way the strawhat will die or this is the end (specially knowing this is not even the middle of the story so far) its heartbreaking seeing luffy really suffer lost for the first time, this is the guy that confront powerfull fishman, pseudo-gods, warlords and event the world goverment but he always have his crew at his side or was able to save the ones in problem, but in this situation the first to go was zoro, arguably the one he need to worry the least because he can protect himself, and then systematically lose every friend in seconds, and i know it was explain to him that they where send away but even if he understand how kuma´s the power works just find someone in a random part of the world is incredible difficult in the one piece universe, so yeah is not instant death but the probability of losing them forever is huge. And fucking genius Oda knew this would hurt, that "Luffy, help me..." coming from Nami but this time he not being able to save her is not only a knife in the chest for us, but a big warning, from now on your not the biggest fish in the pond, you cant just get to an island punch the bad guy and sail away happy to the horizon, stronger people will appear and your family will fall if you dont get stronger yourself, this is how you destroy a character support system just to see how he will react and rise from the challenge, and here come Amazon Lily!!!!

Throughout One Piece, the opponents and challenges our crew have faced have steadily increased in difficulty. More and more, our crew was pushed to their limits and beyond to win; and even then, luck still played a large role in their survival. And so, we arrive at this point. The Straw Hats simply aren't strong enough; not only are they unable to win, but they aren't even strong enough to retreat, and as the narration says, suffer a complete collapse. We, as the audience, know that the crew is physically fine, but it's emotionally devastating, especially to Luffy, unable to save even a single one of his friends. Fans were in shock the first time they read/watched this part. It's one of the biggest turning points in the series.

It’s interesting looking at the progression from Ennies Lobby to Sabaody of Luffy’s strength and protection of the crew slowly not being enough to shepherd the crew. At Ennies Lobby Luffy is down and Lucci begins to move onto the rest of the crew causing Luffy to have to dig deep to beat him but than it’s entirely up to the crew to get them out of there. Than at Thriller Bark Luffy beats Moria but is spent and entirely absent from the Kuma encounter leaving it to Zoro to have to settle it. And now at Sabaody, Zoro gets removed first and Luffy last and neither is capable of doing anything to any of their adversaries (Kizaru,Sentomaru,Kuma,Pacifista) also as a Captain Luffy did great with his decision making here of telling them all to run and split off and get away because the opposition was to great.

Nothing stops Sabaody's dark side, and while a good many slaves escape, many more are left in captivity, and nothing suggests the slave trade is done with by the end of the arc, the celestial dragons continue to be a thing, the government continues to be at the whim of the 1%. the suffering of the fishmen continues.... but most importantly.... the strawhats LOSE. THey do NOT win this fight at all. They are utterly annhilated, not yet ready to face the powerful foes standing in the way of the New World. As dark as other arcs get, they at least have a happy ending where the bad guy is defeated, the people in trouble are saved and things get better. but not here. Not for anyone.

11:53 You see a lot of people misunderstand Zoro's promise to Luffy . In a way yes it means he got defeated multiple times but in Zoro's way the promise meant as he wouldn't ever be defeated in a swordfight ever again . He fought Hachi , Mr.1 , Ohm , Kaku and Ryuma and won all these swordsmen battles so his promise is still going on with no loss . As I said , yes , from another look he DID got defeated by Arlong , even got taken out by Mr.3 , lost to Enel , Lucci , Oars/Moria and now Kizaru . It can easily be understood by that logic that Zoro even knows he can't win at everything , otherwise his promise to Luffy is not just saying his goal is world's strongest swordsman but rather world's strongest in everything , which it obviously isn't . 16:57 Yup , throughout the story we saw Luffy like the undefeated guy who will won at the end all his battles . But this here for the first time we realized that Straw Hats have just been lucky and gotten this far with their growth level of enemies . With Crocodile , Luffy got lucky with the water thing , with Enel , Luffy was his weakness (Otherwise Straw Hats stood no chance against him) , with Lucci was the actual fight where he struggled and actually had a big challenge , lastly with Moria , he was already a guy who was once strong but now has grown weaker . But after this point they met Kuma , Kizaru , Sentomaru and also Pacifistas who are all stronger than them even if they all fight together against one (Also how Straw Hats got exhausted taking down one Pacifista which Kuma just touched and basically defeated so you can see how big the gap is ) . This is the point in story where you start to realize Luffy isn't on that level yet despite all his wins so far . Also Moria DID kept speaking like in a defeated senpai-way that Luffy is too energetic/optimistic and on the level he is at right now he is like nothing compared to what New World is filled with so you can easily say he was right because Straw Hats got defeated badly before even entering the New World 23:19 You forgot Sentomaru mentioned he heard Kuma sends people flying for 3 days and 3 nights , may be even to the other side of the world so I am pretty sure you realize most of your theories were just not gonna work 😅😅 26:47 You gotta realize if Kuma can sent them anywhere in the world he could send them to where One Piece is and as he can't means there are limits to that . By the way this was the last episode of Sabaody Archipelago Arc so yeah...

So long as you get back up and try again eventually when you win will you look back and say you lost or that you grew stronger through hardships and conquered the seat of worlds greatest swordsman. You may lose but you must never be defeated.

By that logic Zoro didn't get defeated by Fraudhawk

So the Red Line is about 10 Coup de Bursts tall. And a full-on continent in width too - not just a small strip, a landmass visible from space. Franky would have to essentially upgrade the Sunny into an airship to clear that, it's not a "jump" they can make.

The manga took its FIRST break too after this. That last line of it being the moment the Stawhats were defeated was so raw. I remember reading it week to week and being SO SURPRISED

Sabaody is such a great arc, it lures you into a false sense of security and accomplishment considering we're at the halfway point by reaching the Red Line, and then pulls the rug out from under you with the complete defeat of the Strawhats. We also have to remember they've won all their fights so far by the skin of their teeth, pushing their limits and barely surviving each time, but there's a limit to how much longer you can do that. Now, they've finally reached the breaking point.

it is funny, Sentoumaru said that supposedly you would fly for 3d if u get sent off by Kuma - exactly the time Rayleigh said he would need to coat the ship :D
