I use M/S for carving out space in the center for vocals. In the stereo rhythm guitar group channel, I'll dip the midrange (500hz - 1k) in "mid" mode. My rhythm guitars are also hard panned going into the group channel. Really helps carve out a little bit more space for vocals and widens the guitars.

it's called sum and difference . (l+r) and (l-r) .when adding l and r channels signals present in both channels get a 3db gain boost and that is what lets you tap into the middle. the difference is not a stereo track

Another excellent video. One request -- a little more time with EQ In/Out, or whatever is being discussed. I find this to be a common issue with experienced engineers on youtube who tend to flash through settings they know so well. My mind needs more time to process the subtle differences in sound. Anyway, great demo and thanks for finding time to make these videos.

So funny, I taught this to an artist tonight exactly the same way without knowing the existence of this video 🤣! When I started to use mids / sides with EQs it was about 4 months ago (as a self-personal challenge I pushed to the limit of what I can do without using these features in an EQ in the past) and starting using this was a life-changer for me, it makes the work so much easier especially to fix the problems. Your videos are really interesting and informative! Take care and have a fantastic weekend! Best Regards from your friend François in Montreal, Canada! 🎼🃏🎵🎶🙏💯🌠

Mid-Side is so easy to understand when demonstrated, but it's soooo difficult to explain! I tried haha. I might make another video to explain better. I used to think of it as "Front sounding" vs "in your head sounding" before I finally worked out what it was.

its not that complicated. side is literally any content that differs in the two channels. correspondingly any frequency content that matches, is mid

I have been warned about using (too much?) mid/side EQ on mastering bus, because of some phase-stuff that I don't really understand completely, that could possibly result in smearing out/blurring transients? Can you elaborate on this? How careful should I be? And before someone says "use your ears": I know, I just don't trust them when it comes to very subtle decisions like those we make in mastering. That's why I'm looking for certain general principles I can follow.

Dude. Thank you for such a great video. Question, I understand the idea and concept of mid and Side eq, but at what point does Stereo Mode eqing need to happen? I guess I can’t get the visual of stereo eqing. What frequencies should Mindfully be adjusted if I’m doing this during my mixing stage on individual instruments with also using mid and side EQ on these individual instruments. Thanks again dude. Cheers

What about this... raise a node at about 1.5k set to the left channel, and another at about 2.5k set to the right channel. Would that likely introduce phase issue, and be totally asinine? :)

Very helpful tutorial; thank you! I have a question about headphones. Many mix engineers use headphones like the MDR-7506 and HD600. For a mastering engineer, is it a good investment to buy a pair of detailed high-end phones such as Audeze, Oppo PM-1 or Focal`s?
@BrianHunsakerMusic11 ай бұрын
Those are decent, but I'd at least go for the Sennheiser HD 560 S (under $200) if you can afford it. I'm using those. They're great, transparent, and very comfortable. I can hardly tell I'm wearing them. If you have $400-$600 there are better options too.
@HornetBojan3 жыл бұрын
That's all great, but what you're doing regarding stereo field (what's the difference), if the main output of the song is stereo (listener), mono sometimes, if the listener is on a side. You can do in M/S a ton of change, but than you go back to "stereo mode" and it all sounds (could...) like crap. When you go to sides and you lift high frequencies, of course you're not going to lift up the bass, because bass "is not there". There's nothing to lift. So, is it just another perspective to see if something on the sides is going bad, wrong in the mastering phase? So this tool actually "isolates" mono information in the song and you're only effecting mono info? If that's so, than this is a great tool, otherwise it would be a waste of time.

Thanks for the great video. I know that you want to listen to everything in context (full track), but I was surprised that you didn't click on the solo button (headphone icon on the filter point) on the sides, low cut filter to ensure that you weren't starting to impact non kick / bass instruments. Is there a reason for that? Or was it because that would be too Pro Q3 specific?
@Streaky_com4 жыл бұрын
I’m just showing you how to use it...you would need to listen and be more delicate etc...different tracks need different things just a demo in this video not actually what I would do to this track

1:47 arn't the sides allways a 2 track, as they are holding the phase difference? so you need 3 eq's and signals if you would want to process them seperately, 1 for the mono sum ( (L + R) / 2 the phase cancels out) and 2 for each side ( L - sum and R - sum) ? I agree that you wouldn't want to treat both sides differently as that would skew the stereo image. if you'd sum the whole side to one signal / eq you'd get .... drum roll .... silence :)
@Streaky_com4 жыл бұрын
I think I understand what you’re thinking, the right hand side of the analogue does both sides of the sum

One thing I’ve always wondered is, with hardware eqs, once your ‘side channel’ has gone through the right side of a hardware eq, how does the daw then know where to place panned information after receiving a single ‘side channel’ of an eq, surely it can’t know pan information based on a single side channel? Or does it use the original audio being sent in order to compare the new processed audio and pan the info back to the right place? Cheers!

Bro we bare hear the difference, you need to exaggerate a bit on KZbin we are not right there with you. This is the big problem with many KZbinrs they are not so great at explaining things with words, then when it comes to showing things they dont realize that teaching others is not like you are actually doing the thing for real as you should do, its teaching and a good teaching must go down to the student level, how can you carry a child from the ground if you dont bend down. Thanks either remake this video or I wont be taking this Chanel serious. even use everyday terms sometimes not a must to use the lingos of the pros. Let me find some Russian or African who can get down to Earth. Its one thing to know something its another thing to know to clearly explain and teach it. Well thanks for the time.
@DeltaWhiskeyBravo135794 ай бұрын
Streaky said in this that he did exaggerate settings, even thought was in a mastering session, so it's really about subtle changes.
